Context:

Although Boucher painted many pastoral scenes with lovers resting in the country, the inclusion of a mother with children suggests Boucher had a specific story in mind when he made this drawing: the biblical narrative (told in the Book of Genesis) of the Departure of Jacob. Below the canopy of a palm tree, Jacob offers a pear to his nursing wife Rachel. Boucher filled the scene with examples of the wealth Jacob acquired during his years of servitude to Rachel's father, Laban-including a loaded donkey, children, sheep, and cattle.
