Context: Rows of Rajput horsemen led by armed warriors cover the principal section of this three-part hanging, while a floral pattern arranged in stripes ornaments the two identical end panels. The central design, figures in rows separated by borders or rosettes, is a typical Hindu pattern and occurs in several other known hangings. In one of them, each row depicts a Rajput horseman, a warrior, a tree flanked by animals, and then three more warriors. In another, the warriors and horsemen are replaced by archers riding elephants. Elsewhere, the tree motif is combined with elephants and riders. Differences in structure verify that these textiles are separate fabrics woven from a stock repertory of motifs. Attached to some of the related examples are similar end panels with floral designs arranged in stripes. Stylistic elements and details of the horsemen's costumes indicate that the central panel was woven in the late sixteenth or the beginning of the seventeenth century. This dates the textile at the end of the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar (ruled 1556?1605). Not only did he reorganize and rejuvenate crafts of all kinds, including weaving, but he was interested in Hinduism and tolerant of it. The high technical quality of the weaving of this hanging suggests that it may have been produced in the royal workshops of Ahmedabad, a city known at the time for its exceptional textiles. It is believed to have been one of many decorative panels that ornamented the interior of a splendid Mughal tent. A.W.
