First edition. This atlas was the first collaboration between Aaron Arrowsmith of London and Samuel Lewis of Philadelphia, one of the first such collaborations (and one of the few -- only David Burr and John Arrowsmith, and Henry Rogers and Keith Johnston come to mind). The title page says 63 maps in large type (some issues say 65 maps, all issues show 63 maps in the index). This atlas also accompanies the text volumes of the American edition of Pinkerton's Modern Geography published in Philadelphia by Conrad in 1804 (see our #3962). Phillips shows editions of 1804, 1805, 1812, and 1819. Uncolored maps bound into marble paper-covered boards with half leather. |

| Note |
There are seven new maps not in earlier editions (mostly of South America), and an equal number of the more obscure European maps have been dropped, the remaining maps have not been updated from the 1804 first edition. The oceans are not delineated with dark lines as in the 1804 and 1805 editions. Starting with the 1805 edition, Morse acquired this atlas (originally published in 1804 to accompany the Philadelphia edition of Pinkerton's Geography) for his Geography. Maps without color bound with paper-covered quarter leather boards. |
