Authors Smith, Charles, fl. 1800-1822
Full Title Comparative View Of The Heights Of The Principal Mountains &c. In The World. Western Hemisphere. Eastern Hemisphere. London, Published by C. Smith, Mapseller No. 172 Strand, Augt. 1st 1816. Gardner Sculpt.
List No 0909.000
Note Shows the comparative heights of mountains in the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, as well as the comparative heights of important places. A list of Authorities is given to the left of the title, and an Explanation shows how the system of numbering mountains and places works. A former owner has added "6225....White Mountains, N.H." to the table. This chart may be one of the earliest of its genre, it is not listed in Wolter's "Heights of Mountains..." (he lists the Thomson 1817 similar chart as the first of this type). The British Museum lists this Smith as the first chart of this kind. Interestingly, Smith's chart does not show the Himalayan Mountains, Thomson adds the Himalayan Mountains to his chart with a note about the recent publication of data on their heights. With black top and bottom sticks, and green silk edging. Full hand painted color.

London, published By John Cary, No. 181 Strand June 1819.
List No 4639A
Note A scarce map that is not listed in Fordham's Cary bibliography, nor in the British Museum list - the BM lists shows a later map (1827) with a different title. This is a finely detailed map in the best Cary style. The cartography follows closely his 18" globe of 1818 (see our copy) and may have been inspired by it - the scale is the same at the equator. The tracks of the various navigations of the period are shown with great precision. An interesting feature is the repetition of western Europe and Africa on both sides of the map. Full color. Map is dissected into 30 sections and folds into a dark olive green marbled board slip case 29x21 with label reading "World. Sold By C. Smith. Mapseller, 172 Strand, London." Relief shown pictorially.

List No 2741C
Note Maps dated 1822-1842. Shows Texas as Republic. Shows some of the Jedediah Smith information on the N. America and Mexico maps. See Wheat 403 & 404, and 413 & 420. Wheat seems to miss the Picquet Mexico map in his discussion, although he lists it in the cartobibliography. The Mexico atlas map is dated 1840 and is a combination of the J. Arrowsmith British N. America 1837, the larger Brue 1834 Mexico map and the 1833 Brue Map of North America. Phillips shows an 1834 edition and an 1839 edition of the atlas. Both have the Mexico map dated 1825. Bancroft has a Mexico dated 1825 with Picquet's stamp dated 1835 - this map does not have the new Arrowsmith/Smith information. Thus we think this 1840 Mexico is the first to be changed since the original 1825 edition. The Brue Mexico 1834 large map, and U.S. 1836 large map with inset of Oregon both, and especially the Mexico map, have Smith information. Picquet engraved both maps, yet it took him five years or so to put the Smith information on the Mexico map in this atlas. The maps are hand painted with both outline and full color, and bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with a green paper label printed with the title "Atlas universel de geographie ancienne et moderne ..." The leather spine is embossed with "Brue. Atlas de geographie ancienne et moderne" in gold.

Note Unlike 1849 ed., this shows California gold region named and shown in yellow. It also adds basin and range topography in Nevada including Carson and Walker lakes, and the Humboldt River (although in a manner different from the late 1850 and subsequent additions -- they probably drew the topographical changes in quickly, and then corrected them in later editions). Roads colored in red ink. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. "Oregon" and "Upper or New California" in bold type, all areas shown in full color. Shows Indian tribes and includes descriptive notes. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Washington.

Holmes, Engraver. 334 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington D.C. F. Mahler, C.E. Head Draughtsman. Entered ... 1861 by Robert P. Smith ... Pennsylvania. (with 6 inset maps and 3 profiles).
List No 3270.000
Note Huge wall map similar in style and scale to Smith's New Naval and Military Map of the United States done in 1862. However, the Washington Map is a completely different engraving of the U.S., done by W.H. Holmes, who probably is not the same Holmes who worked with Hayden (that Holmes was born in 1846) but is most likely the Holmes mentioned in Tooley's Dictionary as the engraver for Chamber's Encyclopedia and Mitchell's Mexico (perhaps the father of the later Holmes?) The LOC copy (P-Maps 911) is dated 1862 and has in addition to Taintor, the Holmes, Harrison & Co., London, as publishers. Many inset views, portraits of the Presidents in the border, and thematic inset maps. Shows Colorado (created that year) and has an interesting, clear and stark rendition of the western topography. Another elaborate Smith production. An earlier edition, 1860, is listed by Phillips as done by M.F. Maury (Maury's name was dropped after the Civil War began because of his support for the Confederacy), also, a late edition, 1868, by H.H. Lloyd. This the first edition copyrighted by Smith. See our two 1862 editions. With black top and bottom rollers. The United States is painted in full color by county, Mexico by state. Shows settlements, transportation routes, and county boundaries. Tables of distances, and state sizes, date of admission, miles of railroads and population. Breakdown of churches by denominations. Time differences table. Ornate margins with vignettes of presidents. 1860 census by county and cities. Inset maps include geology, climate, wildlife, food crops, plants and trees, and world hemispheres. Includes topographic profiles of the United States and the North Atlantic.

List No 2820.000
Note Also published by Holmes Harrison & Co., London. Earlier than the other 1862 in that it is basically the same as the 1861 edition, with two counties added in Kansas, elimination of the list of forts in the upper left corner, adds the London publisher, adds the list of seceding states, and adds the list of ports of entry. List No 2821.000
Note Also published by Holmes Harrison & Co., London. Many changes from the 1861 edition in the west indicate that the 1861 edition was hurriedly put out without filling in all the topography. Under the title is a listing of the Slave States with the Note: "The States Marked thus * Claim to have seceded from the United States." Loss in the top four inches of the map, rebacked. Printed by T.P. Wagner, Philadelphia, who may have added the topographical information. This is the third Smith edition, after the 1861 and the early 1862. With black top and bottom rollers. The United States is panted in full color by county, Mexico by state. Note 1st edition 1864, published in 27 parts 1854-62. The date of 1872 is estimated by the Australia map, all the maps are undated and probably date throughout the period 1864 to 1872: the North America map shows Colorado and Russian America while the United States map has no Colorado. The World maps show Alaska. This is the last highly decorative atlas published in England. Even the maps without views or figures are beautifully engraved and colored with a mixture of printed color and hand color. Swanston, Petermann, Bartholomew, Macnab and Johnson engraved the maps. The introduction by Shaw among other things lists important general atlases published over a long period. He lists only one United States atlas, Mitchell's Universal Atlas of 1853! The maps bear a superficial resemblance to Keith Johnston's Royal Atlas. Fullarton frequently gives the sources for his maps - for the United States maps he gives Calvin Smith and Tanner as sources. The atlas is bound in half leather dark green cloth covered boards with "The Royal Illustrated Atlas." stamped in gilt on the cover, the spine reads "Royal Illustrated Atlas" in gold.
