The 1st ed. of this map, here published as a complete chart of six sheets joined, dissected into 16 sections and folded into Jeffery's original case with a printed label: "Bought of Thomas Jefferys Engraver..." Both map and case are preserved in a new half cloth blue marbled paper book-like case 36x31 with "Green And Jefferys. Chart of North and South America. 1753." stamped in gilt on a leather label on the spine. "This is one of the most important American maps of the period, the first to label Behring's Straits, and the most accurate of the time in establishing more correct placements of the coasts of North and South America and Northeastern Asia. The map is extensively annotated by Green to show the differences of latitude and longitude between his placements on the map and other cartographers, notably Bellin, D'Anville, Brouckner, Popple, and especially DeLisle and Buache in their claims of new discoveries on the American Northwest coast. Jefferys also published Green's "Remarks, In Support of the New Chart of North and South America, in six sheets" which further detail Green's attack on DeLisle's cartography and French claims to the American Northwest. The six sheets of this map are also found bound individually with the text, as in Streeter 3453. Our copy has a printed paste down label in the lower corner of sheet six that explains the color code used to distinguish the different claims of the British, French, etc. Stevens & Tree list several later issues of this chart, including those that appear in Jeffery's American Atlas of 1775. Rare U.S. edition of Arrowsmith's Globular World. Says "The whole engraved under the immediate superintendence of, corrected and improved by, Samuel Lewis, Geographer...Plan work by Harrison, Hooker, Seymour & Boyd. The writing by William Harrison." The dedication to Dalrymple that appears on the English edition is not present here, and the U.S. is somewhat redrawn, with Ohio, Indiana, Michigan (with a redrawn peninsula), Illinois, and Mississippi added. Cook's portrait remains, but in a different location with the cartouche completely redrawn. The balance of the map is almost identical to the English ed., with small exceptions such as labeling Bass Strait in New Holland (not on Eng. ed.). Compare to our 1808 English edition. |

Very rare U.S. edition of Arrowsmith's America. The map has been totally reengraved by J.H. Seymour of Philadelphia using the latest Arrowsmith edition, 1811, as the base. Changes include the delineation of Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Northwest Territory, Mississippi Territory and the delineation of U.S. claims for the Western and Southern Boundary of the Louisiana Territory. The upper Mississippi River has been redrawn, as has the Michigan Peninsula (fatter), and the Great Lakes. No changes found (yet) in the Western U.S. This map is extremely scarce, with no mention of it in any of the standard map references, including Stevens and Tree. It is only listed in Shaw/Shoemaker. Conrad, the publisher of this map, was related to Arrowsmith through the Arrowsmith and Lewis Atlas. With black top and bottom rollers and brown linen edging. Outline color by country. |

Shows the comparative heights of mountains in the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, as well as the comparative heights of important places. A list of Authorities is given to the left of the title, and an Explanation shows how the system of numbering mountains and places works. A former owner has added "6225....White Mountains, N.H." to the table. This chart may be one of the earliest of its genre, it is not listed in Wolter's "Heights of Mountains..." (he lists the Thomson 1817 similar chart as the first of this type). The British Museum lists this Smith as the first chart of this kind. Interestingly, Smith's chart does not show the Himalayan Mountains, Thomson adds the Himalayan Mountains to his chart with a note about the recent publication of data on their heights. With black top and bottom sticks, and green silk edging. Full hand painted color. |
