Note	With two inset charts. This is a highly detailed general chart of the West Indies that is similar in scope and size to Arrowsmith's chart of the same area, but Dessiou's chart gives more detail to the coast lines, harbors, water depths, currents and less detail of the inland areas. We can find no specific reference to this wonderful chart, other than Tooley's Dictionary. Dessiou is listed in the National Maritime Museum Catalog as the author of a London edition of Le Petit Neptune Francais, also published by Faden. Scarce. Map is dissected into 40 sections, and mounted and edged with linen. Outline color. The map has a paste down label on the end sheet reading "Sold by Wm. Faden, Geographer to the King, Charing Cross". Folds into a new blue cloth folding case 32.5x21 with "Chart Of The West Indies J. Foss Dessiou 1808" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note	The last edition of Melish's map of the United States, first published in 1816, and the 25th state identified by Martin/Ristow. This edition has the three additional sheets at the bottom of the map (added in the second state of the 1822 edition) that expand the coverage of Mexico and the West Indies. Compared to the first 1816 edition, there are many changes in the Great Plains area of the U.S. (that first appeared in the 1822 edition) based on Long's Map of 1822 (although Melish does not mention Long in his preface to the Geographical Description edition of 1822). Ristow (A la Carte) says there are no changes between between the 1823 edition and the second state of the 1822 edition, other than the change in publisher and date. Outline color by state or territory. The map is dissected into 50 sections, backed with linen, and edged in white silk. It folds into a new dark blue cloth folding case 25x17 with black ties, the spine is embossed with "Map Of The United States. John Melish. 1823" in gold.

Note	Third edition, first being 1846 (according to Ristow, although Karrow only lists an 1847). Texas is still in large configuration with a panhandle running up to Oregon. California and the Great Basin are shown only as Upper or New California. Fremont's 1843 and 1845 maps are incorporated, but not the 1848 map. The title is in the lower left, with an inset map of the West Indies and an inset of Newfoundland. In the 1850 edition the title is moved to the upper right. In the 1853 edition it is moved to the upper left. Map is dissected into 16 sections and edged in pink silk. Full color by state. Folds into green and pink plaid end sheets and half leather marbled covers 38x35 with ties and a label reading "United States" in elegant manuscript.

Note	This is the third issue of the 1857 Rogers and Johnston Map Of The United States (see our #4390) with Mexico added prominently to the title. Note	This is the third issue of the 1857 Rogers and Johnston Map Of The United States (see our #4390) with Mexico added prominently to the title. Many changes in the western states and territories, not only in political boundaries, but also extensive topographical changes. Note	This is a reworking of the Lubrecht and Rosa map "The American Continent" of 1864, and the first edition, first issue in a new format. Statistics at the top of the 1864 map are here replaced with a view "From the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean" emphasizing the recently completed transcontinental railroad. Also, an elaborate title and view of a steam engine and train station have replaced the more subdued 1864 title. Population tables of the United States are added to the left and right sides of the map. The map itself has been updated to show political and some topographical changes of the ensuing seven years. Projected railroad lines are shown running everywhere in the west. The coloring is very bright, to match the decidedly optimistic (expansionist) flavor of the map. D.L. Guernsey published editions of 1871 and 1874 in Concord New Hampshire, with no major changes in the map. WH has an 1873 edition by Haasis and Lubrecht that adds text next to the population figures, more railroads, no changes in topography. Issued in a cover with a label in German from Wilhelm Lubrecht in Stuttgart, Germany, indicating it may have been sold to emigrants. Full color. Map has green paper edging, is dissected into 16 sections, and fold into a new gray cloth folding case 35x27 with "American Union Railroad Map Haasis & Lubrecht 1871" stamped in gilt on the spine.

We assume that this Williams is the son of Wellington Williams and that he took over his father's map and reissued it. It is interesting to see that John M. Atwood published this map - it appears that he not only published maps, but also drew them for others, i.e. Colton and Ensign & Thayer. Inset maps include: Island Of Newfoundland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island & Connecticut, The Atlantic Ocean Showing The Communications By Cable And Steam Between Europe And The United States, Is. Of Porto Rico, Virgin Is. And S. Cruz, Islands Of Japan ..., Map Of The Great Pacific Ocean With It's Shores And Islands, Alaska, and The Sandwich Islands Or Hawaiian Group. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 36 sections and folds into a new green cloth folding case 29x29 with "United States, Canada, Mexico &c. G.W. Williams 1876" stamped in gilt on the spine.
