The first edition, including Mexico to the Pacific, and with the dedication to Admiral John Willett Payne. In four sheets. Countries are outlined in color. The 1810 second and later editions only extend to the east coast of Mexico, presumably because Arrowsmith published his large map of Mexico in 1810. In its coverage of Mexico and Central America, this map is the largest scale and most accurate map of those areas published to date, preceding Pike's and Humboldt's maps by several years. It seems odd that Humboldt would criticize Arrowsmith for copying his map of New Spain, when Arrowsmith produced his own map (this West Indies Map) which included substantial portions of Mexico several years before Humboldt's map was issued. There are many differences between this map's rendering of Mexico and the 1810 Map of Mexico - the later map has more and better detail, but the earlier rendition is still impressive. Stevens and Tree only list two editions, 1803 and 1810, but Phillips lists an 1811 (P-Maps) and an 1816 (atlases). There probably were others. |

The U.S. portion of the map is identical to Maclure's 1809 base map. This map seems to have a long history. It first appears as the Maclure base in 1809 (indicating that it must have been published as a Political map at that time, but we can find no record of it), then it shows up in Amer. Phil. Soc. 563 as the same map but dated 1811, then a second copy in the same holding dated 1813 and having "2nd edition, Containing the Seat of War &c." - both copies by T.L. Plowman of Philadelphia. This is a portion of the map here - it has the same notations, including the 1813 date, but three sections have been added, including Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, the West Indies, Central America and part of South America. And it has a new title (as above) and is dated 1817 - the title is a paste on slip which presumably covers the earlier title - A Map of the United States of America (as on Maclure). Ristow and Karrow then list an 1820 edition of this same map. The title mentioning the Seat of War indicates that the map had use during the War of 1812. After Plowman's name is "entered according to act of Congress 22nd Mar." With outline color by state and cloth edging. Dissected into 24 sections and folding into half leather marbled paper covered boards 27x17 with ties. |

This is Thomas Streeter's copy of this important map, identified as such by the inclusion of his handwriting on the inside cover, and the words "Louis Billon 1849" in ink on the inside front cover and verso of map. The border includes twelve views. As noted in Streeter, "This later issue of lot 3873 differs in the binding and in showing not only the 'Gold Region' near New Helvetia, but also 'El Dorado or Gold Region' along the Feather River. It also has quite an extensive 'Table of Distances' added at the right of the inset." This is the second 1849 edition, which was also produced as a wall map (see our #4312). In this edition Fremont's route is shown along the Humboldt River, and California has been extensively remapped. Map is in full color and folds into the original blind-stamped covers, 16x11, with the title "Colton's Map of the United States Mexico &c." in gilt on the front cover. |

In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. This large and decorative map by Monk reflects the interest in Central America in the mid 50's (see Palmer, Wyld, Disturnell, and others) but adds the U.S. coast line from Florida to Texas, which is missing in most of the other maps of Central America. With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). Full color map, folded into stamped brown cloth covers 16x11 titled "Monk's New Map Of Central America, Cuba, Florida &c." Relief shown by hachures. |

Unusual medium size map of the U.S., not seen before. This map is taken from D.G. and A.J. Johnson's "New Map of the Union," 1857 (see our #364), updated and somewhat changed. This is further evidence of the close relationship between the Johnsons and Colton in the late fifties and early sixties. Colorado is shown, as well as a horizontal Arizona, and Nevada. Interesting notations about Columbus appear in the West Indies, in the same text as on the Johnsons' v16ersion. In 1860 an earlier version of this map appeared in Carlos Butterfield's "United States and Mexican Mail Steamship Line...", dated 1859 on the map and published by Johnson and Browning (see our #3484).
