| Note |
Osgood Carleton first published a map of the United States in 1791. Another edition appeared in 1797, and then this edition in 1806. This issue is a major redrawing of the 1791 and 1797 maps, and it borrows heavily from Arrowsmith's Map of the United States, 1802 (see our list no. 5699.009, from Thompson's Alcedo Atlas, our 5699.000) especially in the west. But Carleton uses other sources as well, including Bradley's postal map. There was another issue of this map, undated, and updated to some unknown period, perhaps after 1810 or even later (Chris Lane, Philadelphia Print Shop). |

This is the first complete edition of this map, the largest wall map of the United States produced by Americans at that time (although Karrow 1-1418 lists an almost complete 1815 edition). Differences from the 1818 edition include Illinois and Indiana shown as Territories, a large Mississippi with no Alabama, and no Arkansas Territory. Also, there are far fewer roads shown, and fewer settlements laid down, especially in Canada. See our #432 for a proposal for publishing this map. With black top and bottom rollers and dark green linen edging. Outline color by state or territory. |

Engraved by O.T. Eddy. View of Bellows Falls under the title. Superb condition. This map is scarcer that the 1814 Carrigain map of New Hampshire. Various turnpike roads are shown, churches, counties and towns. There is a curious note in northern Vermont about the disappearance of Long Pond. Ruggles also did a map of New England and a map of the United States (after Shelton & Kensett). With black top and bottom sticks. Outline color by county. |

This is the second, unrecorded edition. The first complete edition was 1816, and the third edition, 1819. Ristow notes an incomplete issue (only the title sheet) of 1815. The 1818 and 1819 editions add an inset map of east Florida. This 1818 edition has a printed notation on the U.S. Mexican boundary: "Boundary between the U. States and the Spanish Provinces agreeable to the Treaty of 1819." This indicates that the map was published late in 1818 or early in 1819, either in anticipation of the February, 1819 signing of the treaty, or just after it. This is a huge map, almost six feet square, full of detail on roads, large and small towns, and areas that were "settling up." Like other large U.S. maps (other than the Melish) of the period (Shelton & Kensett, Varle, Bradley, Arrowsmith, Tardieu), this map extends west to just beyond the Mississippi River. It ranks as the largest in size and scale and is certainly the most detailed. And it is rare, with this 1818 copy being perhaps unique. It must have drawn much of its road information from the Bradley postal map of 1804/12. It is similar to the Arrowsmith 1819 in the northwestern areas, but closer to the Tardieu 1818 in the Michigan Peninsula area. It is not clear to us whether Lewis borrowed from Arrowsmith and Tardieu or vice versa, probably it worked both ways. For an enthusiastic contemporary evaluation of the first edition, see our 1815 copy of the advertisement for this map ("It is, we believe, much the largest specimen of geographical design ever produced in the United States...we do not think it equaled by any large map of European workmanship we have ever examined"). Lewis also made a smaller wall map of the U.S. titled "Traveler's Guide: A New and Correct Map of the United States..." in 1819, and another smaller still in 1817 titled "A Correct Map of the United States with the West Indies..." (see our copies). |

Highly detailed, goes west to 110th meridian. Streeter 3804, 3803. Probably influenced by Melish, nonetheless this is an outstanding map, with much of interest in the Missouri Territory. There is a small vignette of a "Traveler" placed over the title, indicating that this was a map to be used as a travel guide. Shows the new Alabama Territory, an interesting configuration of Illinois around Lake Michigan, and strange east west running mountain ranges leading to the Rockies. Lewis and Clark information is incorporated in the upper Missouri River area. The northern boundary with Canada is strange: it follows the 47.5 parallel and the Upper Missouri River. Outline color. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Philadelphia. |

This is the first edition of the "Washington" map, so called because it used a large oval portrait of George Washington in the map's title cartouche. Later editions were published by Phelps (altered), and Thrall (identical). A portion of the main map was used by Huntington in Darby's Gazetteer (see our #2067). Oval portrait of Washington, inset maps of North America, Boston, Washington, New York, view of "The Capital at Washington." Table of distances occupies the Great Basin. Has the famous legend in the Missouri Territory: "Missouri Territory is a vast wilderness consisting chiefly of immense plains, almost destitute of wood, except in the neighborhood of streams. It is traversed by numerous herds of Buffalo & wild Horses, and by a few roving tribes of Indians." This map is also the precursor to the United States maps that appeared in Olney's School Geography, also published in Hartford. With black top and bottom rollers and green silk edging. Full color by state or territory. |

1st edition, 1st wall map issued by Mitchell. This edition does not have the counties delineated and numbered. Ristow mistakenly says all editions have the townships (he means counties) numbered, but this one, the first, does not, thereby eliminating the index of counties and thus showing more of the western territory. This map predates the Traveler's Guide by 1 year, and thus is Mitchell's first "original" production, as opposed to the Finley material he reissued as the American Atlas and Pocket Maps. The case for the map has a leather label saying "Traveler's Map of the United States." Copyright date is October 10, 1831. There is no other date on the map. Ristow thinks the map was issued in early 1832, but it is not in Phillips until 1834 edition (which probably has the counties indicated by number and the 1831 copyright), so Ristow may not have seen this edition, but rather the 1834. The map is hand painted in bright full color by state (insets by county), dissected in 24 sections with green paper end sheets, mounted on linen and edged in pink silk. The covers 24x20 are half red leather marbled paper covered boards with ties and a leather label embossed with "Traveller's Map Of The United States" in gilt. |

Changes from the 1828 edition include: the Michigan Peninsula has been completely redrawn (probably following Tanner's 1832 Map of the United States, our #4406), the Statistical Tables have been filled in for 1830, and Texas is extensively altered adding much of the information from the Steven Austin Map of Texas of 1830, although incorrectly placing Galveston at the mouth of the Trinity River. Lay's showing of Texas in this edition, while not correct in every respect, is the best detailed depiction of Texas on any large map of the United States until Tanner's 1836 edition of his Map of the United States. With black top and bottom rollers, and light yellow cloth edging. Map is unvarnished and has blue outline color by state. |

This is the first year of Colton's map publishing business. Ristow says that Colton published his first map in 1833, Burr's map of New York State, this U.S. map must be as early. The graphic style is similar to Burr's Universal Atlas maps, engraved the following year. With six detailed and elegant inset maps showing the environs of Albany, Boston, New York, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and Baltimore & Washington, plus a small inset map of South Part of Florida. The first edition. This differs from the later editions in not having any inset maps of cities and the Florida peninsula. There are far fewer towns and counties in the mid west and west. The Statistical Table is present under the title, but the two tables of towns are not present on the left side of the map. All in all, this has the look of a preliminary edition, with much information left out that appears in edition immediately following this one. Nonetheless, it is still a marvelous map, given its origins in Reading, Vermont. With black top and bottom rollers and outline color by state. |

The first edition. In wall map form. It is difficult to find any changes between this and the 1835 edition, although there probably are some. Ristow states that there was an issue of this map in 1834 without the word "Mitchell" in the title (see our copy #4843), and he does not mention this word appearing in the title until the 1835 issue. He also notes an 1834 issue of essentially the same map but with the title changed to "A New Map of the United States" (Karrow 1-1484 and our #4396). Stream of Time maps were popular in the second half of the 19th century (see our 1858 Tableau De L'Histoire Universelle by Pick) and later, but this map or diagram by Colton is an early example, at least in the United States. The period covered starts with the Creation in 4004 BC and extends down to 1842. The bottom of the map has an Explanation which states that "Each Nation is represented by a stream which is broken in upon or flows on undisturbed as it is influenced by the accession of Territory or the remaining at Peace." This large four sheet wall map of the United States west to the 100th meridian must have been intended to accompany Burr's 1839 thirteen sheet American Atlas of postal wall maps (see our 0104.000), although there is little record of its publishing other than a listing in Phillips Maps of America, p.896. The American Atlas has a large map of the United States from coast to coast, but it lacks the detail of this wall map, which shows all most all of the postal roads, canals, and railroads that are delineated on the large scale individual state maps of the American Atlas. That detail makes this wall map one of the best large area road maps of the United States as a whole, of the period - more detailed than Tanner's Map of the United States or Mitchell's Reference and Distance Map of the United States. Burr likely published it as an addendum to the American Atlas to give a larger overview of the road system of the entire United States. Ristow (p.106) mentions that Burr published an edition of the American Atlas in 1842, so it is likely that this map was added to the set then. We are presuming that John Arrowsmith was the publisher and printer because of the similarity of style between this wall map and the American Atlas which he published for Burr, but his name does not appear on the map. There is no key or legend, only a scale of miles, and only two classes of roads are shown, primary and secondary, compared to four classes of roads shown on the American Atlas state maps. In the lower right corner is an untitled inset map of North and South America that is a slighly simplified version of part of John Arrowsmith's Map of the World on Mercators Projection, 1844 (see our 4613.002), further evidence of the John Arrowsmith involvement in publishing this wall map. |

This was one of Mitchell's most popular and important pocket maps. Later editions were published in 1849, 1851, and 1852, as pocket maps and as insets to the large Reference and Distance Map of the United States. It was also issued separately as a wall map. This issue has Texas colored green, some copies have Texas colored brown (has the green changed over time?). The text has a catalogue for Mitchell's publications. Mitchell first issued this map as an inset to his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in the 1846 edition (see our copy). |

This is earlier than our 1849 Map of the United States (see #264) which uses the same base map. Here, San Francisco is named Yerba Buena (which name appeared only briefly on maps published in 1848-1849), the Gold Region has far fewer towns (no Sacramento City, Sutters City or Fremont), and the Humboldt River is not yet drawn in the Great Basin. The copyright date is still 1847. Wall map surrounded by drawings showing the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the landing of the pilgrims and numerous battles. A small inset map of Mexico and a chart showing the population of the United States are included. The map is in color by state or region. The gold region of California is shown in gold. This is Thomas Streeter's copy of this important map, identified as such by the inclusion of his handwriting on the inside cover, and the words "Louis Billon 1849" in ink on the inside front cover and verso of map. The border includes twelve views. As noted in Streeter, "This later issue of lot 3873 differs in the binding and in showing not only the 'Gold Region' near New Helvetia, but also 'El Dorado or Gold Region' along the Feather River. It also has quite an extensive 'Table of Distances' added at the right of the inset." This is the second 1849 edition, which was also produced as a wall map (see our #4312). In this edition Fremont's route is shown along the Humboldt River, and California has been extensively remapped. Map is in full color and folds into the original blind-stamped covers, 16x11, with the title "Colton's Map of the United States Mexico &c." in gilt on the front cover. |

First edition, first state. First map to show the new Kansas and Nebraska, also shows the important Gadsden Purchase of the same year. This state precedes all other copies we have seen - it is an early pull from the late 1854, early 1855 Colton Map of the United States of America... wall map plate (see our #2834, indicating it appeared in middle or late 1854 - see our 1855 wall map copy #2278 for the corrected topography), with the title different from the second 1854 state, in that the letters of Nebraska and Kansas have stars in them and are open as opposed to the black letters of the second state. Also, this first state has numerous areas that are "cleaned up" in the second state: the trail that crosses the two forks of the Colorado in southern Utah near the map edge has the word "Route" on it - this is removed in the second state, the vine border is reversed from the first to the second state, Louisiana is written straight across in the first - it curves down in the second, Bucksport and San Augustine are shown in Texas along the map southern edge in the second state and not in the first, Sacket's Well and Laguna in California in the inset map are given dots for their location in the second state but not in the first. There are other changes. Streeter shows a second edition in 1855, Heaston a third edition in 1856, but both copyrighted 1855. These have various route changes and place names added when compared to the 1854. A fourth edition appeared in 1857 (see Karrow 12-0361.2 and Graff 836) with the inset of the U.S. changed to Eastern Nebraska and Kansas. Map is full color by state, folded into red cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover. |
