A New and Correct Map of the United States of North America, Exhibiting the Counties, Towns, Roads &c. in Each State. Carefully Compiled from Surveys and the Most Authentic Documents, by Samuel Lewis. W. & S. Harrison, sculpt. Philadelphia, Published by Kimber & Sharpless for Emmor Kimber 1818. |

| Note |
This is the second, unrecorded edition. The first complete edition was 1816, and the third edition, 1819. Ristow notes an incomplete issue (only the title sheet) of 1815. The 1818 and 1819 editions add an inset map of east Florida. This 1818 edition has a printed notation on the U.S. Mexican boundary: "Boundary between the U. States and the Spanish Provinces agreeable to the Treaty of 1819." This indicates that the map was published late in 1818 or early in 1819, either in anticipation of the February, 1819 signing of the treaty, or just after it. This is a huge map, almost six feet square, full of detail on roads, large and small towns, and areas that were "settling up." Like other large U.S. maps (other than the Melish) of the period (Shelton & Kensett, Varle, Bradley, Arrowsmith, Tardieu), this map extends west to just beyond the Mississippi River. It ranks as the largest in size and scale and is certainly the most detailed. And it is rare, with this 1818 copy being perhaps unique. It must have drawn much of its road information from the Bradley postal map of 1804/12. It is similar to the Arrowsmith 1819 in the northwestern areas, but closer to the Tardieu 1818 in the Michigan Peninsula area. It is not clear to us whether Lewis borrowed from Arrowsmith and Tardieu or vice versa, probably it worked both ways. For an enthusiastic contemporary evaluation of the first edition, see our 1815 copy of the advertisement for this map ("It is, we believe, much the largest specimen of geographical design ever produced in the United States...we do not think it equaled by any large map of European workmanship we have ever examined"). Lewis also made a smaller wall map of the U.S. titled "Traveler's Guide: A New and Correct Map of the United States..." in 1819, and another smaller still in 1817 titled "A Correct Map of the United States with the West Indies..." (see our copies). |

| Note |
This large four sheet wall map of the United States west to the 100th meridian must have been intended to accompany Burr's 1839 thirteen sheet American Atlas of postal wall maps (see our 0104.000), although there is little record of its publishing other than a listing in Phillips Maps of America, p.896. The American Atlas has a large map of the United States from coast to coast, but it lacks the detail of this wall map, which shows all most all of the postal roads, canals, and railroads that are delineated on the large scale individual state maps of the American Atlas. That detail makes this wall map one of the best large area road maps of the United States as a whole, of the period - more detailed than Tanner's Map of the United States or Mitchell's Reference and Distance Map of the United States. Burr likely published it as an addendum to the American Atlas to give a larger overview of the road system of the entire United States. Ristow (p.106) mentions that Burr published an edition of the American Atlas in 1842, so it is likely that this map was added to the set then. We are presuming that John Arrowsmith was the publisher and printer because of the similarity of style between this wall map and the American Atlas which he published for Burr, but his name does not appear on the map. There is no key or legend, only a scale of miles, and only two classes of roads are shown, primary and secondary, compared to four classes of roads shown on the American Atlas state maps. In the lower right corner is an untitled inset map of North and South America that is a slighly simplified version of part of John Arrowsmith's Map of the World on Mercators Projection, 1844 (see our 4613.002), further evidence of the John Arrowsmith involvement in publishing this wall map. |

First edition, first state. First map to show the new Kansas and Nebraska, also shows the important Gadsden Purchase of the same year. This state precedes all other copies we have seen - it is an early pull from the late 1854, early 1855 Colton Map of the United States of America... wall map plate (see our #2834, indicating it appeared in middle or late 1854 - see our 1855 wall map copy #2278 for the corrected topography), with the title different from the second 1854 state, in that the letters of Nebraska and Kansas have stars in them and are open as opposed to the black letters of the second state. Also, this first state has numerous areas that are "cleaned up" in the second state: the trail that crosses the two forks of the Colorado in southern Utah near the map edge has the word "Route" on it - this is removed in the second state, the vine border is reversed from the first to the second state, Louisiana is written straight across in the first - it curves down in the second, Bucksport and San Augustine are shown in Texas along the map southern edge in the second state and not in the first, Sacket's Well and Laguna in California in the inset map are given dots for their location in the second state but not in the first. There are other changes. Streeter shows a second edition in 1855, Heaston a third edition in 1856, but both copyrighted 1855. These have various route changes and place names added when compared to the 1854. A fourth edition appeared in 1857 (see Karrow 12-0361.2 and Graff 836) with the inset of the U.S. changed to Eastern Nebraska and Kansas. Map is full color by state, folded into red cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover. |

This is the third year of Colton's publication of this map. Other than adding his name to the title, the map remains the same, except for many changes in the topographical and political information: Washington, Oregon, Utah, New Mexico and California (but not Kansas yet) are shown on the inset map of North America. On the main map Iowa's western counties are filled out, Texas adds many counties in the west, and railroad growth is explosive throughout, all compared to the 1850 edition. With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county with states outlined. |

The map referred to must be the 1855 edition (see our copy) of Warren's General Map for the Pacific Railroad Reports. The list of Authorities is almost identical to the list on that map. Also, the map details of the west used in Johnson's map follow the 1855 edition in scope. Entered in 1856 and first issued in 1857. With an inset map of the World, and views of the U.S. Capital and state symbols around an eagle, tables of Distances and Statistics from the Census of 1850. Compared to the 1859 edition (our 4012.000) Colona, Jefferson, and Shoshone are added as proposed states in the west, one of the only maps we have seen to show all three. Also, the imprint of Johnson and Browning, Richmond Virginia is very unusual and probably one of the last north south publishing collaborations on the eve of the Civil War. There is Note and list of Authorities which reads in part "The part of this Map, between the Mississippi River and Pacific Ocean, was taken (with the consent of Capt. A.A. Humphreys) principally from a map compiled from the following authorities by Lieut. G.K. Warren, Topl Engrs...In the Office of Pacific Rail Road Surveys, War Department." Also published by Holmes Harrison & Co., London. Many changes from the 1861 edition in the west indicate that the 1861 edition was hurriedly put out without filling in all the topography. Under the title is a listing of the Slave States with the Note: "The States Marked thus * Claim to have seceded from the United States." Loss in the top four inches of the map, rebacked. Printed by T.P. Wagner, Philadelphia, who may have added the topographical information. This is the third Smith edition, after the 1861 and the early 1862. With black top and bottom rollers. The United States is panted in full color by county, Mexico by state. Shows settlements, transportation routes, and county boundaries. Tables of distances, and state sizes, date of admission, miles of railroads and population. Breakdown of churches by denominations. Time differences table. Ornate margins with vignettes of presidents. 1860 census by county and cities. Inset maps include geology, climate, wildlife, food crops, plants and trees, and world hemispheres. Includes topographic profiles of the United States and the North Atlantic. |

| Note |
This immense, large scale map at first appears to be manuscript, entirely hand drawn. Dissected into 35 sections and mounted on linen. Upon closer inspection, it proves to be a lithograph of a hand drawn field map, with several large sections filled in or corrected in manuscript and with the waterways colored blue. It is centered on the area around Suffolk, Virginia, extending north and east to Fort Monroe, Hampton Roads and Norfolk, west to Franklin, Zuni and the Blackwater River, and south to about nine miles south of the North Carolina border. It was probably hand drawn and lithographed for immediate field use (note the title says "Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret") with a very small press run, and corrected and updated as needed. There is a great deal of local information shown: the names of all property owners and their farms and buildings, railroads, rivers and small streams, the large Dismal Swamp, fortifications, roads and paths and distances thereon, "old Rebl. camp," "Rebl camp," "Marmaduke Ellis (Deserter)," "Negroes," and more. A "Note" at the top right corner gives the sources of the map: "Coast lines by U.S. Coast Survey" and then a list of surveys by Maj Wetterall, Maj. Stratton, 1st Lieut. James, 1st Lieut. Ch. Worrett, Lt. Soederquist, and Geo. Kayser, that were used in the construct of this map. Below the Note is the manuscript signature of "Lieut. James Ch Engr. Suffolk" and a manuscript presentation of the map "To Brig. Gen Terry with compliments of 1st Lt. C.H. James Act. Chief Engineer Maj. Gen Pecks Staff." We have dated the map (1863) based on the Soederquist Map of Suffolk & vicinity (Stephenson 661) which Stephenson dates (1863). Soederquist's map is on the same scale as this map, and is most likely a companion map to the Soederquist map of Norfolk & Vicinity that is listed in the "Note" as a source for this map. This map was the "mother" map for Bancroft's several issues of the pocket map versions of the northern and southern halves of this map, as well as for many later issues of this map. It is wonderfully detailed, full of endless information on the western states, information that is found in few other maps of the same period. It differs from the 1863 edition in not having an inset map of Hawaii and in showing Montana and Idaho. With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county, outlined by state. |
