1812
Wall Map
Authors Arrowsmith, Aaron, Seymour, J.H.
Full Title Map of America by A. Arrowsmith. Philadelphia, Published by Kimber and Conrad, and Johnson and Warner. J.H. Seymour, sculp.
List No 2315.000
Note Very rare U.S. edition of Arrowsmith's America. The map has been totally reengraved by J.H. Seymour of Philadelphia using the latest Arrowsmith edition, 1811, as the base. Changes include the delineation of Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Northwest Territory, Mississippi Territory and the delineation of U.S. claims for the Western and Southern Boundary of the Louisiana Territory. The upper Mississippi River has been redrawn, as has the Michigan Peninsula (fatter), and the Great Lakes. No changes found (yet) in the Western U.S. This map is extremely scarce, with no mention of it in any of the standard map references, including Stevens and Tree. It is only listed in Shaw/Shoemaker. Conrad, the publisher of this map, was related to Arrowsmith through the Arrowsmith and Lewis Atlas. With black top and bottom rollers and brown linen edging. Outline color by country.
Melish, John
Map Of Pennsylvania.
1822
Wall Map
Authors Melish, John
Full Title Map of Pennsylvania. Constructed from the County Surveys authorized by the State and other original Documents by John Melish. Engraved by B. Tanner. Entered ... 7th day of June 1822, by John Melish ... Pennsylvania. (title engravng) Drawn by F. Kearny. Engraved by B. Tanner.
List No 4307.000
Note First edition. Compared with the 1826 edition, there are many changes. The 1826 edition adds the delineation of topography adjoining the river systems, roads in almost every county, numerous changes in the emerging coal regions in the east central part of the state, more mountains and plateaus drawn in, and B. Tanner's name as publisher below the neat line in the lower right. With black top and bottom rollers. Outline color by county.
Lay, Amos
United States.
1832
Wall Map
Authors Lay, Amos
Full Title Lay's Map of the United States. Compiled from the Latest and best Authorities and Actual Surveys By Amos Lay, Geographer and Map Publisher New York 1832. Engraved by O.H. & D.L. Throop & Wm. Chapin, New York. O.H. Throop, del. Entered ... May 8th 1827 By Amos Lay ... New York. (inset) Florida.
List No 5170.000
Note Changes from the 1828 edition include: the Michigan Peninsula has been completely redrawn (probably following Tanner's 1832 Map of the United States, our #4406), the Statistical Tables have been filled in for 1830, and Texas is extensively altered adding much of the information from the Steven Austin Map of Texas of 1830, although incorrectly placing Galveston at the mouth of the Trinity River. Lay's showing of Texas in this edition, while not correct in every respect, is the best detailed depiction of Texas on any large map of the United States until Tanner's 1836 edition of his Map of the United States. With black top and bottom rollers, and light yellow cloth edging. Map is unvarnished and has blue outline color by state.

1842
Wall Map
Authors Burr, David H., 1803-1875
Full Title Map of the United States Of North America, By David H. Burr. Geographer to the House of Representatives of the U.S. . Entered ... 12th Jan. 1842, by David H. Burr ... District of Columbia.
List No 5805.000
Note This large four sheet wall map of the United States west to the 100th meridian must have been intended to accompany Burr's 1839 thirteen sheet American Atlas of postal wall maps (see our 0104.000), although there is little record of its publishing other than a listing in Phillips Maps of America, p.896. The American Atlas has a large map of the United States from coast to coast, but it lacks the detail of this wall map, which shows all most all of the postal roads, canals, and railroads that are delineated on the large scale individual state maps of the American Atlas. That detail makes this wall map one of the best large area road maps of the United States as a whole, of the period - more detailed than Tanner's Map of the United States or Mitchell's Reference and Distance Map of the United States. Burr likely published it as an addendum to the American Atlas to give a larger overview of the road system of the entire United States. Ristow (p.106) mentions that Burr published an edition of the American Atlas in 1842, so it is likely that this map was added to the set then. We are presuming that John Arrowsmith was the publisher and printer because of the similarity of style between this wall map and the American Atlas which he published for Burr, but his name does not appear on the map. There is no key or legend, only a scale of miles, and only two classes of roads are shown, primary and secondary, compared to four classes of roads shown on the American Atlas state maps. In the lower right corner is an untitled inset map of North and South America that is a slighly simplified version of part of John Arrowsmith's Map of the World on Mercators Projection, 1844 (see our 4613.002), further evidence of the John Arrowsmith involvement in publishing this wall map.

List No 2274.000
Note Early county map copyright by Smith. Unusual borders. This county was later remapped by J.H. French in 1859 for the French-Smith N.Y. State Map project. Apparently several of the early county maps like this one had to be redone for greater accuracy (Ristow). Inset maps include: Eaton Village, Oneida, Chittenango, Canastota, Cazenovia, Hamilton, and Morrisville. With black top and bottom rollers. Edged in green silk. Full color. Shows key structures, water features, roads by type, canals, railroads, subdivisions, and ownership.

List No 4012.000
Note Entered in 1856 and first issued in 1857. With an inset map of the World, and views of the U.S. Capital and the Mormon Temple at Salt Lake City, tables of Distances and Statistics from the Census of 1850, and a Note and list of Authorities which reads in part "The part of this Map, between the Mississippi River and Pacific Ocean, was taken (with the consent of Capt. A.A. Humphreys) principally from a map compiled from the following authorities by Lieut. G.K. Warren, Topl Engrs...In the Office of Pacific Rail Road Surveys, War Department." The map referred to must be the 1855 edition (see our copy) of Warren's General Map for the Pacific Railroad Reports. The list of Authorities is almost identical to the list on that map. Also, the map details of the west used in Johnson's map follow the 1855 edition in scope. Karrow lists many issues of this map from 1857 to 1861, with the views varying in each issue, and with Colton taking over as publisher in 1860. See our late Colton edition of 1890 (our #5150). With black top and bottom roller. Full color by county or territory in the U.S. and by state in Central America. Edged in dark blue silk.

List No 5811.000
Note Entered in 1856 and first issued in 1857. With an inset map of the World, and views of the U.S. Capital and state symbols around an eagle, tables of Distances and Statistics from the Census of 1850. Compared to the 1859 edition (our 4012.000) Colona, Jefferson, and Shoshone are added as proposed states in the west, one of the only maps we have seen to show all three. Also, the imprint of Johnson and Browning, Richmond Virginia is very unusual and probably one of the last north south publishing collaborations on the eve of the Civil War. There is Note and list of Authorities which reads in part "The part of this Map, between the Mississippi River and Pacific Ocean, was taken (with the consent of Capt. A.A. Humphreys) principally from a map compiled from the following authorities by Lieut. G.K. Warren, Topl Engrs...In the Office of Pacific Rail Road Surveys, War Department." Note 1st ed. "Military Map and Gazetteer of the Southern States" on verso. Large scale full color map showing only the southern states, with counties, railroads and cities shown. This map was produced in wall map, pocket map and sheet form. This presentation has Lloyd's "newspaper" on the verso which describes the counties of Virginia and Missouri, Southern Coast Surveys and is dated September 7, 1861. On the front page Lloyd states that the Map and Gazetteer "will be issued every Saturday morning at 8 o'clock." It is not known if any other issues were printed - Stephenson lists only this issue. There is also an advertisement for Lloyd's "$100,000 Topographical Map of the State of Virginia" ("the only real good map ever made in America") on both the map and the newspaper on the verso and an ad for Lloyd's Map of Missouri. See our copy of Lloyd's advertisement for this map issued earlier in the year.

Authors Smith, Robert P., Taintor, S. & Co.
Full Title The Washington Map Of The United States. By the Superintendent U.S. National Observatory, Washington D.C. 1861. S. Taintor & Co. Publisher, W.H. Holmes, Engraver. 334 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington D.C. F. Mahler, C.E. Head Draughtsman. Entered ... 1861 by Robert P. Smith ... Pennsylvania. (with 6 inset maps and 3 profiles).
List No 3270.000
Note Huge wall map similar in style and scale to Smith's New Naval and Military Map of the United States done in 1862. However, the Washington Map is a completely different engraving of the U.S., done by W.H. Holmes, who probably is not the same Holmes who worked with Hayden (that Holmes was born in 1846) but is most likely the Holmes mentioned in Tooley's Dictionary as the engraver for Chamber's Encyclopedia and Mitchell's Mexico (perhaps the father of the later Holmes?) The LOC copy (P-Maps 911) is dated 1862 and has in addition to Taintor, the Holmes, Harrison & Co., London, as publishers. Many inset views, portraits of the Presidents in the border, and thematic inset maps. Shows Colorado (created that year) and has an interesting, clear and stark rendition of the western topography. Another elaborate Smith production. An earlier edition, 1860, is listed by Phillips as done by M.F. Maury (Maury's name was dropped after the Civil War began because of his support for the Confederacy), also, a late edition, 1868, by H.H. Lloyd. This the first edition copyrighted by Smith. See our two 1862 editions. With black top and bottom rollers. The United States is painted in full color by county, Mexico by state. Shows settlements, transportation routes, and county boundaries. Tables of distances, and state sizes, date of admission, miles of railroads and population. Breakdown of churches by denominations. Time differences table. Ornate margins with vignettes of presidents. 1860 census by county and cities. Inset maps include geology, climate, wildlife, food crops, plants and trees, and world hemispheres. Includes topographic profiles of the United States and the North Atlantic.

Note See notes to other issues of this map. This is earlier than our other 1861 edition (3270) and has an unusual boundary for Utah, extending east in Nebraska in the northeast corner. Other changes from the later 1861 edition include H.G. Bond as publisher, no County formation date in the Explanation list, different map in the Zoological Distribution inset, and some changes to topography. An earlier edition, 1860, is listed by Phillips as done by M.F. Note Also published by Holmes Harrison & Co., London. Earlier than the other 1862 in that it is basically the same as the 1861 edition, with two counties added in Kansas, elimination of the list of forts in the upper left corner, adds the London publisher, adds the list of seceding states, and adds the list of ports of entry. Full Title Military Map of a part of Eastn. Virginia Department of Maj: Genl: J.A. Dix Comdg 7th Army Corps completed from several Military Reconnaissances & Surveys under the Direction of Capt: Wm. Heine Topt. Engr. U.S. drawn & compiled by Lieut. Ch. Worret & G. Kayser Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret.
List No 5081.000
Note This immense, large scale map at first appears to be manuscript, entirely hand drawn. Dissected into 35 sections and mounted on linen. Upon closer inspection, it proves to be a lithograph of a hand drawn field map, with several large sections filled in or corrected in manuscript and with the waterways colored blue. It is centered on the area around Suffolk, Virginia, extending north and east to Fort Monroe, Hampton Roads and Norfolk, west to Franklin, Zuni and the Blackwater River, and south to about nine miles south of the North Carolina border. It was probably hand drawn and lithographed for immediate field use (note the title says "Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret") with a very small press run, and corrected and updated as needed. There is a great deal of local information shown: the names of all property owners and their farms and buildings, railroads, rivers and small streams, the large Dismal Swamp, fortifications, roads and paths and distances thereon, "old Rebl. camp," "Rebl camp," "Marmaduke Ellis (Deserter)," "Negroes," and more. A "Note" at the top right corner gives the sources of the map: "Coast lines by U.S. Coast Survey" and then a list of surveys by Maj Wetterall, Maj. Stratton, 1st Lieut. James, 1st Lieut. Ch. Worrett, Lt. Soederquist, and Geo. Kayser, that were used in the construct of this map. Below the Note is the manuscript signature of "Lieut. James Ch Engr. Suffolk" and a manuscript presentation of the map "To Brig. Gen Terry with compliments of 1st Lt. C.H. James Act. Chief Engineer Maj. Gen Pecks Staff." We have dated the map (1863) based on the Soederquist Map of Suffolk & vicinity (Stephenson 661) which Stephenson dates (1863). Soederquist's map is on the same scale as this map, and is most likely a companion map to the Soederquist map of Norfolk & Vicinity that is listed in the "Note" as a source for this map. List No 4824.000
Note This map is among the most detailed and largest scale maps of Yosemite issued during this part of the 19th century, rivaled only by the Wheeler Survey map of Yosemite published in 1883. This is a second issue of this map, here mounted as a wall map. This is the same as the first issue that appeared with the Yosemite Guide Book (see our #4212) except that it adds "Hite's Cove" on the Merced River just slightly west of its junction with Devil's Gulch. In the (1870) third issue (our #4650) Hite's Cove is relocated to a point just south of the Merced on the road titled "Road to Hite's Cove" and the erasure of the prior label is apparent. We have dated this second issue (1869) as a best guess. With black top and bottom rollers, and pink linen edging. Map is without color.
