Note This is one of the most attractive of the California Gold Rush period maps. Here it is published in pocket map form, with the 16 page "Appendix to Jackson's Map..." which describes the important mining centers. More ornate and detailed than Jackson's map of 1850, this is the only map to label Santa Cruz county "Branciforte." Shows for the first time, some of the mining activity in the south, which Jackson was involved with as an engineer. Map is full color by county, folded into dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "Jackson's Map Of The Mining Districts Of California" stamped in gilt.

Note Same as the 1848 edition, but shows different states in the western U.S. Also eliminates the Table of Distances in Mexico. This map is mounted as a wall map. Blanchard's name is dropped. Date is estimated from the U.S. western states. Map is surrounded by drawings including pictures of Generals Taylor and Scott, a panoramic view from New York to the Pacific Ocean by the "contemplated Oregon railroad," the Great Temple destroyed by Cortez in 1521 and "The Halls of the Montezumas." With black top and bottom sticks. Full color by state or territory.

First edition was 1850 (Howes C623) by Colton, Howes says the guide is descended from J. Calvin Smith's Guide of 1846, the map is slightly larger scale than the Smith and larger in size, and it is clearly related. Another example of the Colton/Smith relationship - this Guide, the Western Guide, and the Large Map of the U.S. and the Canadas. This map is derived from the large wall map of the United States of America (see our #3960). The division between the two plates used to make this portion of the wall map is visible in Tenn. and N. Carolina. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.
