First detailed 19th century survey. Has Humphrysville "Woolen Manufactory..." notation, thus 1st edition, 2nd state (Thompson). Foundation map of state, first to show turnpikes. Extensive listing of manufactories, mills, churches, etc. Later published in smaller size, editions from 1820 to 1847. Engraved by Abner Reed, East Winsor. Thompson lists this same map as 1812, but it is entered in 1813, and the current Governor is listed as 1813-, leading one to believe an 1813 date would be more accurate. Outline color. With black top and bottom rollers. |

See Never's 1852 edition for a resurrection of this plate 37 years later (see our copy, #2562), and Stebbins map of 1859, still using this map as a base. The sixteen stars that surround the eagle above the title supposedly represent the number of states in the union in 1815. Outline color by county. |

Manuscript map. Dated by Bridgeport (1821 incorporation of city). Howard Welsh has two sheets of notes attempting to date this map by the appearance of the Southwick "notch" of 1805 (and noting that Thompson did not identify the appearance of the notch in 1805 as a map dating device). However, we think that Thompson's approach of the appearance of towns is best here. Who was Lucy Barker? The map is very well done. Edged in golden tan silk, with black top and bottom rollers. Outline color by county. |

Map of New London and Windham Counties In Conn. from Actual Survey. |
| List No |
3721.000 |
| Note |
One of the first county wall maps of a New England state. Nothing is known about William Lester and this and the Norwich map may be the only maps he made. There are eight inset maps of towns in the counties and a large inset "Geological Map of Windham & New London Counties From the surveys of Lt. W.W. Mather, U.S.M.A. 1832." A small red paste on label says "Colored And Put Up by C.S. Williams, N. Haven, Conn." One of the insets shows the projected Boston, Norwich & New London Rail Road - the earliest charting of a Connecticut railroad (Thompson). The map is exceedingly well done, with the drawing and the engraving of the highest quality for the period. It is rare - the only reference found was in Thompson's listing. |
