With 46 page "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map Of Texas, Oregon, and California With The Regions Adjoining;" the full color map is folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Texas, Oregon And California" in gilt. This was one of Mitchell's most popular and important pocket maps. Later editions were published in 1849, 1851, and 1852, as pocket maps and as insets to the large Reference and Distance Map of the United States. It was also issued separately as a wall map. This issue has Texas colored green, some copies have Texas colored brown (has the green changed over time?). The text has a catalogue for Mitchell's publications. Mitchell first issued this map as an inset to his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in the 1846 edition (see our copy). |

This is one of the most attractive of the California Gold Rush period maps. Here it is published in pocket map form, with the 16 page "Appendix to Jackson's Map..." which describes the important mining centers. More ornate and detailed than Jackson's map of 1850, this is the only map to label Santa Cruz county "Branciforte." Shows for the first time, some of the mining activity in the south, which Jackson was involved with as an engineer. Map is full color by county, folded into dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "Jackson's Map Of The Mining Districts Of California" stamped in gilt. |

Date is estimated from the U.S. western states. Map is surrounded by drawings including pictures of Generals Taylor and Scott, a panoramic view from New York to the Pacific Ocean by the "contemplated Oregon railroad," the Great Temple destroyed by Cortez in 1521 and "The Halls of the Montezumas." First edition was 1850 (Howes C623) by Colton, Howes says the guide is descended from J. Calvin Smith's Guide of 1846, the map is slightly larger scale than the Smith and larger in size, and it is clearly related. Another example of the Colton/Smith relationship - this Guide, the Western Guide, and the Large Map of the U.S. and the Canadas. This map is derived from the large wall map of the United States of America (see our #3960). The division between the two plates used to make this portion of the wall map is visible in Tenn. and N. Carolina. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. |

Later wall map version of the 1846 "New Map," with the 1846 map on verso. Both sides have the decorative borders not found on the pocket map issues. The western topography and political delineation has been completely redrawn in California, Utah, New Mexico and Texas, when compared to the 1846 1st edition. This map says entered in 1850, but we can find no record of an 1850 issue, only an 1851. However, the atlas map in the 1852 Universal Atlas follows this larger 1852 map (it is taken from the same plate) and it was in 1850 that Thomas Cowperthwait took over the atlas publication from Mitchell, and probably this map as well. So there may be an 1850 issue. Not seen by Wheat - Wheat 726 is the 1851 issue of this map as it appears as an inset (with an inset within it of the Gold Regions) in Mitchell's 1851 Reference and Distance Map of the U.S. (W.H. has a separate Pocket Map issue of this 1851 map without the Gold Region inset, the 1852 issue has towns added in the Gold Region that do not appear on the 1851 edition). The map still has the original table of "Emigrant Route from Missouri to Oregon" with distances. During restoration, when the linen was removed from the back of this map, we discovered the 1846 first edition printed on the verso. Apparently the printer reused some of the 1846 edition unbacked wall maps as stock for the 1852 wall map edition. The linen backing conveniently hid the old map. |
