Changes from the 1828 edition include: the Michigan Peninsula has been completely redrawn (probably following Tanner's 1832 Map of the United States, our #4406), the Statistical Tables have been filled in for 1830, and Texas is extensively altered adding much of the information from the Steven Austin Map of Texas of 1830, although incorrectly placing Galveston at the mouth of the Trinity River. Lay's showing of Texas in this edition, while not correct in every respect, is the best detailed depiction of Texas on any large map of the United States until Tanner's 1836 edition of his Map of the United States. With black top and bottom rollers, and light yellow cloth edging. Map is unvarnished and has blue outline color by state. |

This is the first year of Colton's map publishing business. Ristow says that Colton published his first map in 1833, Burr's map of New York State, this U.S. map must be as early. The graphic style is similar to Burr's Universal Atlas maps, engraved the following year. With six detailed and elegant inset maps showing the environs of Albany, Boston, New York, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and Baltimore & Washington, plus a small inset map of South Part of Florida. Outline color, folded into dark teal leather covers 13.5x8 with "Burr's Map of the United States Published By J.H. Colton & Co. New York" and a decorative border stamped in gilt. Map of New London and Windham Counties In Conn. from Actual Survey. |

3721.000 |
| Note |
One of the first county wall maps of a New England state. Nothing is known about William Lester and this and the Norwich map may be the only maps he made. There are eight inset maps of towns in the counties and a large inset "Geological Map of Windham & New London Counties From the surveys of Lt. W.W. Mather, U.S.M.A. 1832." A small red paste on label says "Colored And Put Up by C.S. Williams, N. Haven, Conn." One of the insets shows the projected Boston, Norwich & New London Rail Road - the earliest charting of a Connecticut railroad (Thompson). The map is exceedingly well done, with the drawing and the engraving of the highest quality for the period. It is rare - the only reference found was in Thompson's listing. |

The first edition. This differs from the later editions in not having any inset maps of cities and the Florida peninsula. There are far fewer towns and counties in the mid west and west. The Statistical Table is present under the title, but the two tables of towns are not present on the left side of the map. All in all, this has the look of a preliminary edition, with much information left out that appears in edition immediately following this one. Nonetheless, it is still a marvelous map, given its origins in Reading, Vermont. With black top and bottom rollers and outline color by state. |

This 1833 edition is later than any recorded edition (Karrow shows editions of 1825, 1829, and 1831). There are numerous changes from the 1825 edition: the addition of counties in the developing states, changes to the statistical table to include the census of 1830, new roads, the reduction of Arkansas Territory, and the addition of three canal profiles, two of which replace the steamboat route table and the other placed above the main title. Without rollers. Full color by state or territory. |

A map of Amherst. With a view of the College and Mount Pleasant Institution. By Alonzo Gray & Charles B. Adams. Amherst College, May 1833. Pendleton's Lithography, Boston. |
| List No |
4601.000 |
| Note |
Pendleton's Lithography published many Massachusetts town plans starting with Lynn and Saugus in 1829 and continuing to 1836. The plans had been drawn at the request of the State Legislature to facilitate the making of an accurate map of the state, which was eventually published by Borden in 1844. The town plans are some of the earliest published using lithography. This map of Amherst is especially attractive, with a large view of the College and Mount Pleasant Institution. Notable property owners are shown, including Prof. Hitchcock and E. Dickinson (the father of Emily Dickinson). Shows also churches, schools, houses, factories, mills, hotels, woodland, alluvial land, ponds, etc. Relief shown by hachures. With black top and bottom rollers. Map is without color. |

The first edition. In wall map form. It is difficult to find any changes between this and the 1835 edition, although there probably are some. Ristow states that there was an issue of this map in 1834 without the word "Mitchell" in the title (see our copy #4843), and he does not mention this word appearing in the title until the 1835 issue. He also notes an 1834 issue of essentially the same map but with the title changed to "A New Map of the United States" (Karrow 1-1484 and our #4396). Insets show the United States, south part of Florida, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, north part of Maine, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Albany, Baltimore and Washington, Cincinnati, Charleston and New Orleans. With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by state. |
