Full Title (Covers to) Map of the state of Virginia. Compiled from the best authorities at the Coast Survey Office. A.D. Bache, Supdt. July 1863. Compiled by W.L. Nicholson. Lith. by Chas. G. Krebs.
List No 4986A
Note General map of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and southern Pennsylvania showing cities and towns, roads, rivers, and relief by hachures. The map is overprinted in red to indicate railroads, the state name "West Virginia," and concentric circles centered on Richmond. Circles are at intervals of ten miles. A table of "Distances by Rail Roads" appears below the map title. Printed in colors, this map is probably the first U.S. Government map to show the new State of West Virginia. It is the first issue, published in July, 1863, just after West Virginia became a state on July 1, 1863. A second issue appeared in August, 1863. It was issued in substantially the same form in 1862 (Stephenson 465.45). Two other issues appeared in 1862 taken from this map: Map of Eastern Virginia and Map of Western Virginia. These were all popular maps, and Stephenson quotes the 1862 Coast Survey Annual Report as stating that 5,500 copies of the Map of Eastern Virginia alone were printed. Map is folded into textured brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Map of Virginia. W.S. & A. Martien, Philadelphia" in gilt.

1863
Case Map
Authors Worret, Charles, Kayser, G.
Full Title Military Map of a part of Eastn. Virginia Department of Maj: Genl: J.A. Dix Comdg 7th Army Corps completed from several Military Reconnaissances & Surveys under the Direction of Capt: Wm. Heine Topt. Engr. U.S. drawn & compiled by Lieut. Ch. Worret & G. Kayser Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret.
List No 5081.000
Note This immense, large scale map at first appears to be manuscript, entirely hand drawn. Dissected into 35 sections and mounted on linen. Upon closer inspection, it proves to be a lithograph of a hand drawn field map, with several large sections filled in or corrected in manuscript and with the waterways colored blue. It is centered on the area around Suffolk, Virginia, extending north and east to Fort Monroe, Hampton Roads and Norfolk, west to Franklin, Zuni and the Blackwater River, and south to about nine miles south of the North Carolina border. It was probably hand drawn and lithographed for immediate field use (note the title says "Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret") with a very small press run, and corrected and updated as needed. There is a great deal of local information shown: the names of all property owners and their farms and buildings, railroads, rivers and small streams, the large Dismal Swamp, fortifications, roads and paths and distances thereon, "old Rebl. camp," "Rebl camp," "Marmaduke Ellis (Deserter)," "Negroes," and more. A "Note" at the top right corner gives the sources of the map: "Coast lines by U.S. Coast Survey" and then a list of surveys by Maj Wetterall, Maj. Stratton, 1st Lieut. James, 1st Lieut. Ch. Worrett, Lt. Soederquist, and Geo. Kayser, that were used in the construct of this map. Below the Note is the manuscript signature of "Lieut. James Ch Engr. Suffolk" and a manuscript presentation of the map "To Brig. Gen Terry with compliments of 1st Lt. C.H. James Act. Chief Engineer Maj. Gen Pecks Staff." We have dated the map (1863) based on the Soederquist Map of Suffolk & vicinity (Stephenson 661) which Stephenson dates (1863). Soederquist's map is on the same scale as this map, and is most likely a companion map to the Soederquist map of Norfolk & Vicinity that is listed in the "Note" as a source for this map. Brown & Co. 47 Nassau St. N.Y. Entered ... 1864, by C.S. Richardson ... New York.
List No 4190.000
Note Copyright 1864. The first separate map of West Virginia listed in Phillips. No other references found - precedes the two West Virginia oil maps listed in Streeter (3919, 3924). Folded originally, now flat. Virginia is shown as East Virginia. Shows Oil Works, Iron Mines, Coal Mines, as well as several manuscript notions on the location of coal and oil deposits. An attractive map with ornate decorative border, and most likely the first separately published map of this new state. Outline color showing state borders. Not in Stephenson. Tooley lists an (1862) edition (although West Virginia was created in 1863) and the 1864. Tooley also lists a map of Texas by this same Richardson, 1860 - we believe this is incorrect - the Texas map was by Willard Richardson (see Day, Maps of Texas). Scarce.
