Note State I of this map (State II lists only J. Reid as publisher). This map is taken from the first official plan of Washington published by Andrew Ellicott in 1792 (see Wheat & Brun 531). The Reid map is not an exact copy, with the title moved from the upper right to the lower left, several notes not included, and other elements moved. An exact copy of Reid's map appears in the London edition of Winterbotham's "View of the United States of America" (see our #3885). Howes gives precedence to the London edition, so it is not clear if Reid or Russell copied the Ellicott first. The Reid American Atlas index does not call for the Washington map, leading to the assumption that it was added to some copies afterwards, and speculation that it may have been sold as a separate. Scarce.

Note Full color map with no publisher name, and date, Wheat says Haven, 1846. This copy was published late in 1846, see our early 1846 copy for a different issue. Streeter 3871 attributes this to Ensign and Thayer due to its similarity to their 1848 Ornamental Map of the U.S. and Mexico (Streeter 3872). Wheat says that this map is the source of Haven's broadside map of 1846 (Wheat 26) and the Journal of Commerce map of 1848 (Wheat 47), which use the top 2/3 and bottom 2/3 respectively, of this map, and therefore Wheat attributes this to Haven. The 1846 date is the latest date in the statistics on the states that flank the map. Wheat mentions that he found a copy in Farnham's Life and Travels in California, and our copy has written on the back in ms "Life and Travels in California," so this may be another place it was used, or what it was originally made for (see our copy of the Farnham with the map). See High Ridge 15 for two issues of the Haven 1846 broadside (Streeter 3865, 3866). includes "panoramic view of Oregon and California, and state seals. Relief shown by hachures. Note This map is similar to Mitchell's "Map of Mexico" but it is focused on the California Gold Region, which has been colored bright yellow. Because most of the California cartography is closer to 1847 when the map was copyrighted, Wheat says "this is an example of the rather common practice of 'doctoring up' old maps for sale to the gold-seekers." Note Map printed without color. Includes view of Pyramid Lake, Upper California, and table of distances. This map was issued with Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" (the book is not present). A later issue of this map appeared in Colton's pocket map titled "Colton's Map of the United States, Mexico & c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" (see our #170). This first issue is distinguished from the second issue by the following differences: On the main map, the second issue has "Printed at Ackerman's rooms 120 Fulton St. N.Y." under the "Entered...." line below the title, the table of distances on the second issue adds "New Orleans to Havana" and "New Orleans (actually the ditto sign ) to Vera Cruz" and drops those miles on the lines in the Gulf of Mexico linking those ports, on the inset map of the Gold Region, the second issue has "Quicksilver Mines" below San Jose instead of "Quicksilver" and the second lists three southern rivers not listed in the first - Stanislaus, Towalumnes, and Acumnes, and finally, in the second issue the decorative border of vines is changed in ways too subtle to list here. None of the prior authorities have noted these differences between the two states. Colton also published a version of this first issue on heavier paper, unfolded with wide margins, and without the lines or distances on them linking the ports of New Orleans, Vera Cruz and Havana, in the Gulf of Mexico, this may be the earliest issue. Note Removed from the United States Register by John Disturnell for 1854 (Wheat 801 refers to this as the "Congressional Directory, 1st Session, 33rd Congress"). Wheat missed the fact that this map is taken from the same base map as Colton's 1849 "Map of the United States, The British Provinces...Showing The routes of The U.S. Mail Steam Packets to California..." It has the same inset view of Pyramid Lake, but the inset map of the Gold Regions is omitted as well as the inset of South America. A table is added in the upper right of "Geographical Statistics." And this later map extends northward about 8 inches further than the 1849 map, to include all of Alaska and Canada. Several railroad routes to the west coast are shown, and there is a mysterious circle about six inches in diameter (about 1400 miles in scale) around Chicago, with no explanation given for it. Nebraska is shown in reduced size, but no Kansas. There are many updates to the map in the West, compared to the 1849. Disturnell published the U.S. Directories during the 1840's, 50's, 60's, and 70's, and most of them had one or another of Colton's North America maps. See also our somewhat different 1852 issue (#4715). Full and outline color. Shows railroads, trails, roads, town and cities, Indian tribal areas, and drainage. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C.
