Map of the United States.
1826
Wall Map
Authors Huntington, Eleazer, Willard, A.
Full Title Map of The United States Compiled from the most Authentic Sources. Published By E. Huntington & A. Willard, Hartford, 1826. Entered ... September, 1826. (with 5 inset maps).
List No 2472.000
Note This is the first edition of the "Washington" map, so called because it used a large oval portrait of George Washington in the map's title cartouche. Later editions were published by Phelps (altered), and Thrall (identical). A portion of the main map was used by Huntington in Darby's Gazetteer (see our #2067). Oval portrait of Washington, inset maps of North America, Boston, Washington, New York, view of "The Capital at Washington." Table of distances occupies the Great Basin. Has the famous legend in the Missouri Territory: "Missouri Territory is a vast wilderness consisting chiefly of immense plains, almost destitute of wood, except in the neighborhood of streams. It is traversed by numerous herds of Buffalo & wild Horses, and by a few roving tribes of Indians." This map is also the precursor to the United States maps that appeared in Olney's School Geography, also published in Hartford. With black top and bottom rollers and green silk edging. Full color by state or territory.

Note Stephenson dates 1862 - battle at Ft. Donaldson View shows the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and the states to the south, primarily Kentucky and Tennessee, but also parts of Missouri and Arkansas. Bachmann did six views of the Confederate States like this one - high altitude views showing topography, cities, battle scenes, ships at sea and on rivers, and roads and railways. They are very rare. This copy and the four others in the set were backed on linen and folded into black leather covers 38x30, each with title and the initials "G.G.W.", the title on the cover of this copy reads "Kentucky & Tennessee & Parts Of Southern States." After checking all the listings in DAB, I think that G.G.W. is George Grover Wright, chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court from 1855 to 1870, and then U.S. Senator until 1877. His brother, Joseph A. Wright, was Governor of Indiana. The views came out of a house in Northern New England, perhaps from a relative. Full color.

Chicago, Ill.
List No 3022.001
Note 1st edition, 1st year of operation for Cram's business. Everything about this map is different from Cram's later productions: it is his first year of operation, at 134 Lake Street, and the style of the cover, the map and the cartouche all have an "early" and unsophisticated look. Charles Shober is listed as Lithographer. Cram also produced the Guide Map to Chicago in 1868 (see our copy). Surviving pre fire maps by Cram are rare. Karrow shows 1869 maps for Missouri, Missouri and Kansas together, and Illinois, (all engraved by Pfeiffer, not Shober), but he shows no 1868 maps other than this Iowa and the Chicago maps. So this may be Cram's first state pocket map. It is copyright 1868. There is a view of a steam engine in the cartouche, this does not appear in later Cram maps. A 10 page index lists principal towns and counties, and gives a brief history of the state. Full color. Map is folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 14x9 with "New Township Map Of Iowa" in gilt.
