Full color map with no publisher name, and date, Wheat says Haven, 1846. This copy was published late in 1846, see our early 1846 copy for a different issue. Streeter 3871 attributes this to Ensign and Thayer due to its similarity to their 1848 Ornamental Map of the U.S. and Mexico (Streeter 3872). Wheat says that this map is the source of Haven's broadside map of 1846 (Wheat 26) and the Journal of Commerce map of 1848 (Wheat 47), which use the top 2/3 and bottom 2/3 respectively, of this map, and therefore Wheat attributes this to Haven. The 1846 date is the latest date in the statistics on the states that flank the map. Wheat mentions that he found a copy in Farnham's Life and Travels in California, and our copy has written on the back in ms "Life and Travels in California," so this may be another place it was used, or what it was originally made for (see our copy of the Farnham with the map). See High Ridge 15 for two issues of the Haven 1846 broadside (Streeter 3865, 3866). includes "panoramic view of Oregon and California, and state seals. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. |

Map Of The Gold Regions Of California, Showing the Routes via Chagres and Panama, Cape Horn, &c. ... Published by Ensigns & Thayer, 50 Ann Street New-York. (with untitled inset map of North and South America). |

| Note |
With the wide (1.5 inch) ornamental border and printed on heavy paper. Similar to but an earlier version of the Upper or New California and Oregon portion of the Atwood and Ensigns & Thayer's Map of the United States, 1849. Closer to and derived from their Pictorial Map of the United States of 1847 (see Wheat). Also has a map of North and South America from an unknown source. Under the maps are two blocks of text, one titled "Important Directions to Persons Emigrating to California" and the other titled "Description of California or the new Gold Region." Another version of this map was published on thinner paper and with a 5/16 inch ornamental border (Wheat 85) (see our copy- the title is in different print). The geography of the west is pre-Fremont 1848 unlike the 1849 Map of the United States which incorporates Fremont 1848. This makes us think that the map may be 1848 - there is no date on the map and Wheat estimates the date from sources he does not mention (other than finding the thinner paper copy in a book published in 1849). Full color. Relief shown by hachures. |

Not an Annual Report! Unique edition-all engraved. A set of most of the Coast Survey maps published to July 1854, and all are engraved instead of lithographed as were the maps in the annual reports. Each map has the unique inscription at the top reading "Presented under authority of an act of Congress of the United States of June 3d 1844 by direction of the Treasury Department A.D. Bache Superintendent Coast Survey." U.S. Atlases lists another edition (L3666) of 1856. Bound with half leather and marble paper covered boards with title in gilt on spine. David Rumsey Collection copy: the chart "Sea Coast of Delaware, Maryland and part of Virginia" is lithographed rather than engraved. Laid in is a broadside published by the Survey "Coast Survey charts published, sketches and preliminary charts, the following sketches will be gratuitously distributed:, Agents for sale of maps:, Coast Survey Office, Washington, March 15, 1853" (our pub. list no. 5754). |

Compare to 1846, '47, and '48 issues. Derived from the 1848 edition by Ensigns and Thayer, this edition uses the same U.S. base map (cerograph) updated to show changes in the western U.S., and changing the map title to "Map of the United States and Mexico" (eliminating "Including Oregon, Texas and the Californias"). Portraits of Lafayette and Franklin flank Washington (replacing Gen. Taylor and Gen. Scott). "Distances in Mexico" is removed from the lower left of the map. The rest of the broadside is unchanged. Seven years after the Mexican War, the patriotic themes of expansion continue in this map. Full color map. Includes "Panoramic view from New York to the Pacific Ocean". Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. |
