First edition, to accompany the author's "British Dominions in North America." A later enlarged edition was published in New York by Sherman & Smith in 1846 (see our #5071), reprinted with additions in 1852, 1853 (no significant changes)(see NMM 479 for an atlas edition of the map, 1853). Joseph Bouchette Junior carried on his father's work and this map is a worthy successor to the elder Bouchette's 1815 map of Upper and Lower Canada. The scale is almost three times as large and the size of the map is doubled. A list of authorities is given, all Canadian, ending with "several important American Authorities" (which are unnamed). Lands belonging to the Canada Company are shown. There is a great deal of detail in the U.S. portions of the map, and attention is paid to the Maine boundary dispute with a note - but only the British claim line is shown. Outline color by state. Map has green cloth edging and is dissected into 35 sections. Folds with blue paper end sheets into a new gray cloth folding case 28x21.5 with "Upper And Lower Canada J. Bouchette, Jr. 1831" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

First edition. This map is an extensive revision and redrawing on the same scale of Bouchette's 1831 map of Upper and Lower Canada (see our #4436). The map is extended east to include all of Nova Scotia and further north to include Anticosti Island. New inset maps are added of Environs of Montreal, Lake Superior, and the Niagara District, and the other insets of Newfoundland and British North America are thoroughly revised. The changes to the U.S./Canadian boundaries in Oregon (1846) and Maine (1842) are shown, as well as the first three, short Canadian railways (compared to a large number shown underway in the U.S.). In addition, there are many other revisions to the main map, well documented by Winearls. Copyrights are given for Canada and New York. NMM 479 is a folio atlas version of the six sheets of this map issued in 1853. Winearls lists two later editions of the map in 1852 and 1853. To us, the most interesting aspect of this edition is the fact it was engraved and printed in New York by Sherman and Smith, rather than in London by J. & C. Walker and James Wyld as with the 1831 edition. The style is very definitely "New York" - bold and visually striking. This is the second large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - after the map of the Canadas by David Taylor, 1834 (see our #4691). It is a most beautiful and rare map. Full color by county. Map is dissected into three sheets of 16 sections each. Map has silk edging, and folds with green plain end sheets into a burgundy leather slip case with "Bouchette's Map Of British North America 1846." stamped in gold. |

A traveler's guide (similar to Mitchell) with an exceptional map (51x64). The map is titled "Die Vereinigten Staaten Von Nord-America." It is engraved by J.E. Woerl (see Tooley Dictionary) and printed (Litho) by B. Herder. It is beautifully engraved, extending from coast to coast and full of much interesting information. In the west it is largely a copy of Brue's "Mexique" map of 1834 and perhaps Brue's 1833 map of North America (not seen). Yet none of Smith's routes are shown. Wheat does not mention it, but does mention a later Bromme map of 1853, which is of the eastern half of the country with an inset of the west (see our 1855 copy, #4364). Buck traces the beginning of this guide to a larger work by Bromme published in 1840. The map here is pre Fremont, pre Mexican War and seems to show a large Texas Republic, making its date around 1840-42. The guide book and map are housed in printed paper case. The larger book originally published in 1840 contained travel descriptions as well as a listing of routes. This edition only lists the routes. Bromme published many travel guides with maps in the period of 1835-1865. Sabin provides the most detailed listings. Map in outline color. |

In 1835 Peck and Messenger published their first map, a smaller map of "Illinois and part of the Wisconsin Territory." In 1836 they issued a much larger map, published by Colton, that is the ancestor of this 1852 map. Karrow shows issues of 1836, 1838, 1839, 1844, 1846, 1848, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1863, 1866, 1868, and 1869. The 1836 copyright was kept throughout, except for the 1853 issue, when the copyright was changed to 1853. In the unrecorded 1860 and 1867 issues (see our copies), the title adds Colton's name. It is odd that with so many issues of the map, it has become truly scarce. In its time, it was the best map of Illinois by far, and was probably the most popular. It is one of the only maps to show the vast extent of the prairies by graphic symbol. In addition to the two inset maps, there is an untitled profile of the Michigan Canal. There are columns of texts on the Public Lands, the Land Districts, Canals, and Population. In 1839 Peck issued with Colton the "Traveller's Directory For Illinois," with a slightly smaller map of the state (Karrow 4-1479). Peck was a Baptist Minister who traveled extensively in Illinois and adjoining states as a part of his work, and his keen sense of observation quickly made him an authority on the West. His Guide for Emigrants appeared in 1831, and his Gazetteer of Illinois in 1834. After his death in 1858, Colton continued to publish this map under Peck's name. Vogdes shows this as the first edition. Vogdes says that the survey was completed in April, 1852, and that the interior topography was taken from Eddy's official map of the city. We have a reproduction of an earlier state of the chart which has no soundings and is dated 1852, it says the plan of the city was taken from the map by Cooke and Le Count, there are differences in the piers and the buildings along the piers. We can find no reference for this earlier state. In the Annual Report of the Survey for 1853, another issue of the chart was published (litho) with the addition of more notes regarding tides in the upper left - this same chart was also issued (engraved on thin paper) in the collection of charts published by the survey in 1854. Map is without color. |

Not an Annual Report! Unique edition-all engraved. A set of most of the Coast Survey maps published to July 1854, and all are engraved instead of lithographed as were the maps in the annual reports. Each map has the unique inscription at the top reading "Presented under authority of an act of Congress of the United States of June 3d 1844 by direction of the Treasury Department A.D. Bache Superintendent Coast Survey." U.S. Atlases lists another edition (L3666) of 1856. Bound with half leather and marble paper covered boards with title in gilt on spine. David Rumsey Collection copy: the chart "Sea Coast of Delaware, Maryland and part of Virginia" is lithographed rather than engraved.
