Note This atlas was Finley's attempt to compete with Henry Tanner's American Atlas - the maps are grouped in much the same arrangement as Tanner used and the cartography and engraving are equal to Tanner, although the scale and map size are smaller. There are only two issues that we have seen, both dated 1826 on the title page, but with different dates on the maps. In the first issue, the maps are dated 1824-26, in the second issue (this copy) the maps are dated 1826-27. Finley continued to publish the maps as pocket maps until 1831 when he sold his map and atlas copyrights to Mitchell, who reissued this American Atlas only once, in 1831 (see our #3884) but continued to issue the pocket maps, with updates, until about 1850. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with red leather label stamped with "Finley's American Atlas" in gilt. Full color.

Note This is the first edition of the "Washington" map, so called because it used a large oval portrait of George Washington in the map's title cartouche. Later editions were published by Phelps (altered), and Thrall (identical). A portion of the main map was used by Huntington in Darby's Gazetteer (see our #2067). Oval portrait of Washington, inset maps of North America, Boston, Washington, New York, view of "The Capital at Washington." Table of distances occupies the Great Basin. Has the famous legend in the Missouri Territory: "Missouri Territory is a vast wilderness consisting chiefly of immense plains, almost destitute of wood, except in the neighborhood of streams. It is traversed by numerous herds of Buffalo & wild Horses, and by a few roving tribes of Indians." This map is also the precursor to the United States maps that appeared in Olney's School Geography, also published in Hartford. With black top and bottom rollers and green silk edging. This copy, although having several areas of loss, is significant in being the personal copy of Anthony Dey, one of the three principals of the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company. It is not signed by Dey, but was found with many of his personal papers including documents relating to the Company (see our #5177). On the map, the lands owned by the Company are outlined in manuscript. The Company controled a vast area of land in southeastern Texas and was one of the earliest to offer lands for sale to colonists - several of its promotional materials are listed in Streeter Texas. Outline color by state. Map is folded into red leather covers 15x8.5 stamped with "Mexico." in gold.

Note 2nd (and best) edition, first with Tanner's Map of the Canals and Railroads of the United States. The map is copyright 1830. The book lists over 150 canals and navigation improvements in great detail. The map shows the most important canals and two railroads in operation, and one proposed railroad (the Great Western Railroad, from New York to the Mississippi River)plus two others. The canals and railroad lines are in color. The first edition appeared in 1826 with 10 maps but without the Tanner map (see our copy #4214). Tanner in 1834 and 1840 (see our copies, #2655 and #979) published a book on Canals and Railroads that uses the same map, updated. Modelski lists the 1834 Tanner map as "one of the earliest general maps of the eastern United States showing railroads in operation." Since this 1830 copy is an earlier state of the same map, it probably qualifies as the true "first." Two folding plates of profiles of canals and railroads at the back. Not in Streeter, Eberstadt, or Graff. Bound in half leather boards with "A Connected View" on the spine.

Note This is the same map as the map that appears in Mitchell's 1831 reissue of Finley's 1826 American Atlas. It is dated 1831 under the title - changes from the 1826 Finley issue include the appearance of Chicago, reduction of Arkansas, and the elimination of "Territory" in the title of Michigan. W. Heckrotte has a copy without the 1831 date under the title and with Mitchell's name in slightly different print. It is probably an earlier state. Full color map folded into brown leather covers 15.5x9 with "U. States" and a decorative border in gilt. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and Greenwich. Relief shown by hachures.
