1st edition of the first geological map of U.S. A portion of a map of the U.S. by Samuel Lewis is used to make this map. The full sheet of paper was put on a larger plate and pulled, leaving the upper and right side without borders, as issued. Uncut and untrimmed, the map appears here with Maclure's original essay on the geology of the U.S. In 1817 Maclure published an expanded versus of his essay, using the small Melish Map of the U.S. as a base. Maclure was dissatisfied with the Lewis map because of its rendering of the mountains, and an errata slip is attached to the back of p 423 explaining this (and stating that originally it was intended to use a reduction of the Bradley U.S. map). See Marcou 1858 for more discussion of the Lewis map. Maclure did a Paris printing of the article and Map (using a map by Volney as a base) in 1811, in French. The Lewis map is most likely the Map of the U.S. published in the 2nd edition of Carey's American Atlas, 1809 (P-Maps p 876,Walsh). Maclure's map and essay are very rare. There is an inscription on the title page to "Mons. F.A. Michaux-Paris, from his friend..." Map bound into the back of paper covered boards with the title handwritten on the spine. Map in full color by geologic structure. |

| Note |
The U.S. portion of the map is identical to Maclure's 1809 base map. This map seems to have a long history. It first appears as the Maclure base in 1809 (indicating that it must have been published as a Political map at that time, but we can find no record of it), then it shows up in Amer. Phil. Soc. 563 as the same map but dated 1811, then a second copy in the same holding dated 1813 and having "2nd edition, Containing the Seat of War &c." - both copies by T.L. Plowman of Philadelphia. This is a portion of the map here - it has the same notations, including the 1813 date, but three sections have been added, including Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, the West Indies, Central America and part of South America. And it has a new title (as above) and is dated 1817 - the title is a paste on slip which presumably covers the earlier title - A Map of the United States of America (as on Maclure). Ristow and Karrow then list an 1820 edition of this same map. The title mentioning the Seat of War indicates that the map had use during the War of 1812. After Plowman's name is "entered according to act of Congress 22nd Mar." With outline color by state and cloth edging. Dissected into 24 sections and folding into half leather marbled paper covered boards 27x17 with ties. |

The date is estimated, the only date on the map being 1812. Compared to the 1812 edition, Alabama Territory is added (1817) and Mississippi is a state (1817). Indiana Territory has been divided into Illinois and Indiana Territories, Missouri Territory appears with Louisiana as a state (1812), and there are many additions of towns and roads in the Midwest and Southeast. Chicago appears. The only major topographical changes we can find are in the Florida/Georgia border and coast line. The next issue of this map was the 1820 dated issue. Comparing this map to the Arrowsmith "additions to 1819" issue of the Map of the United States, one is impressed that Tardieu's map is far more up to date. Even though Tardieu began by copying the Arrowsmith map, his editions are consistently more current with the political and topographical changes of the times. Map is in four sheets, each dissected into 15 sections, and backed and edged in linen. Outline color by state. Sheets folds into original brown marbled slip case 22x15 embossed in gold with "Metz. Ecole Royale D'Artillerie" on the front and "Tardieu. Etats-Unis D'Amerique" on the spine. |

This is the second, unrecorded edition. The first complete edition was 1816, and the third edition, 1819. Ristow notes an incomplete issue (only the title sheet) of 1815. The 1818 and 1819 editions add an inset map of east Florida. This 1818 edition has a printed notation on the U.S. Mexican boundary: "Boundary between the U. States and the Spanish Provinces agreeable to the Treaty of 1819." This indicates that the map was published late in 1818 or early in 1819, either in anticipation of the February, 1819 signing of the treaty, or just after it. This is a huge map, almost six feet square, full of detail on roads, large and small towns, and areas that were "settling up." Like other large U.S. maps (other than the Melish) of the period (Shelton & Kensett, Varle, Bradley, Arrowsmith, Tardieu), this map extends west to just beyond the Mississippi River. It ranks as the largest in size and scale and is certainly the most detailed. And it is rare, with this 1818 copy being perhaps unique. It must have drawn much of its road information from the Bradley postal map of 1804/12. It is similar to the Arrowsmith 1819 in the northwestern areas, but closer to the Tardieu 1818 in the Michigan Peninsula area. It is not clear to us whether Lewis borrowed from Arrowsmith and Tardieu or vice versa, probably it worked both ways. For an enthusiastic contemporary evaluation of the first edition, see our 1815 copy of the advertisement for this map ("It is, we believe, much the largest specimen of geographical design ever produced in the United States...we do not think it equaled by any large map of European workmanship we have ever examined"). Lewis also made a smaller wall map of the U.S. titled "Traveler's Guide: A New and Correct Map of the United States..." in 1819, and another smaller still in 1817 titled "A Correct Map of the United States with the West Indies..." (see our copies). |

| Note |
Melish, in his first edition of "A Geographical Description of the United States," (1816) wrote of his plans to publish a series of sheet maps on a uniform scale that would form an atlas of the United States. He reiterated this plan in the 2nd and 3rd editions of the "Geographical Description" and expanded upon it in "A Geographical Description of the World" in 1818. According to Ristow, this plan to publish the maps at the same scale was "a new and revolutionary idea that facilitated size comparisons." Indiana was the first to be published in 1817. Tennessee was published in 1817. The Illinois map followed in 1818, with an "improved" edition in 1819. No mention is made in any sources of this map, "improved to 1820." Alabama was completed in 1818, Mississippi in 1819, and Louisiana in 1820. Only these six maps were completed before Melish died in 1822. A copy of the 1818 Illinois map is held at the Library of Congress. The 1819 map is held at the Newberry Library and the National Archives. No copy of the 1820 edition has been mentioned in the references. The map is in outline color by county with township and survey lines shown. |

| Full Title |
(Title Page to) Observations on the Geology of the United States of America, With Some Remarks on the Effect Produced on the Nature and Fertility of Soils, By the Decomposition of the Different Classes of Rocks, And An Application to the Fertility of Every State in the Union, In Reference to the Accompanying Geological Map. With Two Plates. By William Maclure. ... Philadelphia: Printed for the Author, by Abraham Small ... 1817. (with) Essay On The Formation of Rocks, Or An Inquiry Into the Probable Origin of Their Present Form and Structure. By William Maclure. ... Philadelphia, Printed by John Wilbank ... 1838. |
| List No |
4070A |
| Note |
The title page is dated 1817 and the text is unchanged from the 1817 edition, but the Melish base map is changed from the 1817 edition Melish map to one that shows all of Florida and Missouri and Arkansas (with Arkansas in an 1828 formation). The map is the second state (White 1817B), although it is really an entirely different map. It is similar to the Map of The United States that appears in Melish's Traveler's Guide of 1822 and in Carey and Lea's American Atlas, but it has been reengraved, and the title is changed to United States of North America. It is colored geologically, but there is no color key. The same map appears in the Jackson Wreath of 1829, but in an earlier state. Bound in at the back is the "Essay..." mentioned above. This copy belonged to Francis P. Farquhar, noted California historian. Bound in brown cloth covers with "Geology" printed in gold on the spine. |
