Note	This large four sheet wall map of the United States west to the 100th meridian must have been intended to accompany Burr's 1839 thirteen sheet American Atlas of postal wall maps (see our 0104.000), although there is little record of its publishing other than a listing in Phillips Maps of America, p.896. The American Atlas has a large map of the United States from coast to coast, but it lacks the detail of this wall map, which shows all most all of the postal roads, canals, and railroads that are delineated on the large scale individual state maps of the American Atlas. That detail makes this wall map one of the best large area road maps of the United States as a whole, of the period - more detailed than Tanner's Map of the United States or Mitchell's Reference and Distance Map of the United States. Burr likely published it as an addendum to the American Atlas to give a larger overview of the road system of the entire United States. Ristow (p.106) mentions that Burr published an edition of the American Atlas in 1842, so it is likely that this map was added to the set then. We are presuming that John Arrowsmith was the publisher and printer because of the similarity of style between this wall map and the American Atlas which he published for Burr, but his name does not appear on the map. There is no key or legend, only a scale of miles, and only two classes of roads are shown, primary and secondary, compared to four classes of roads shown on the American Atlas state maps. In the lower right corner is an untitled inset map of North and South America that is a slighly simplified version of part of John Arrowsmith's Map of the World on Mercators Projection, 1844 (see our 4613.002), further evidence of the John Arrowsmith involvement in publishing this wall map.

Note	First edition, first issue. A larger version of the accompanying map was issued in 1842 with scale of 1:600,000 - this version is unknown to us (and anyone else we have met)- Bray states that only 200 copies were printed, the House of Representatives issued this 1843 edition in 1845 with no changes, although Wagner Camp says the map was smaller and Bray states that it was a more faithful representation of the original 1842 map. See Donald Jackson, The Expeditions of John Charles Fremont, for a history of the Nicollet map and all the Fremont maps. Fremont worked extensively with Nicollet on this map and "this was the work which trained Fremont in cartography." (Jackson). This map was the earliest accurate map of the Northern Plains and the Upper Mississippi. G.K. Warren, in his Memoir, stated that this "map was one of the greatest contributions ever made to American geography." Nicollet died in 1843. His map was years ahead of its time, with its regional concept and sound basis in instrument readings and astronomically determined points. Goetzmann: "Had he lived one more decade, Nicollet would undoubtedly have become the official government cartographer of the whole trans-Mississippi West." Rebound in brown fabric covers with "Hydrographical Basin of the Upper Mississippi, I.N. Nicollet, 1843" in gold on the spine.

Note	Engraved, 23 1/2 x 34 1/2 inches, colored in outline. Dissected, mounted on linen, folded to 9 x 5 inches, in original slip case (24 x 14 cm.) with Wyld's label, with title Oregon District. Inset: 21 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches. This is a close copy of the original, but with much of the hachuring of mountains omitted as well as the representation of wooded areas. Note	House Issue, map in case. Lacks the astronomical observations that appear in the first issue by the Senate. The large map of the west is one of the most interesting and beautiful government maps of the 1840's. It filled in many of the gaps in cartographic knowledge of the west. Charles Preuss was the cartographer. Map is without color. Book is bound with full leather with "Executive Documents 2d Sess. 28th Cong." on the spine in gold.
