Note With nine maps, most folding and large (Maui is 110x133) showing land uses, topography, ownership, etc. The maps are dated around 1900 and are very interesting and attractive. The text and the maps give a look at the early commercial development of the islands. Several of the maps date from the Hawaiian Government Survey, headed by W.D. Alexander, the Surveyor General. This survey predated the U.S. take over in 1899. The later maps are by the Hawaii Territory Survey, Walter E. Wall, Surveyor. On the title page is stamped "Private Property of M.M. O'Shaughnessy." He built the Hetch-Hetchy water system for San Francisco as chief city engineer and many other important public works. Earlier in his career, he worked in Hawaii as a consultant to the plantations for various improvements (see DAB).
