World Atlas
Authors Carey, Mathew
Full Title (Title Page to) Carey's General Atlas ... Philadelphia: Published By Mathew Carey. May 1, 1796.
List No 2862B
Note This was the first General Atlas published in the United States. It has the same maps as Carey's Guthrie Atlas, and adds a large map of the United States by Samuel Lewis, which is an imposing and important map, lacking in most copies. The Lewis map of the United States appears here for the first time. Even though the contents page of Carey's Guthrie Atlas calls for a map of the United States, it is not found in any copies that we know of. Karpinski (CXIV) incorrectly says this map appeared in the American Atlas of 1795. These maps are not folded horizontally, as are the 1795 Guthrie maps, and the Map of France has a 1798 engraving credit that does not appear on the Guthrie 1795 issue. This copy also contains a map not belonging to this atlas, glued inside the back cover, entitled "Chart of the Atlantic Ocean" published by Edmund M. Blunt, Newburyport in 1802. Atlas is bound in quarter leather, brown and black patterned paper covered boards.

World Atlas
Authors Arrowsmith, Aaron, Lewis, Samuel
Full Title (Title Page to) A new and elegant general atlas, comprising all the new discoveries, to the present time. Containing sixty-three maps, drawn by Arrowsmith and Lewis. Published by John Conrad & Co., Philadelphia, M. & J. Conrad & Co., Baltimore, Rapin, Conrad & Co., Washington City, Somervell & Conrad, Petersburg, Bonsal, Conrad & Co., Norfolk. 1804.
List No 2436B
Note First edition. This atlas was the first collaboration between Aaron Arrowsmith of London and Samuel Lewis of Philadelphia, one of the first such collaborations (and one of the few -- only David Burr and John Arrowsmith, and Henry Rogers and Keith Johnston come to mind). The title page says 63 maps in large type (some issues say 65 maps, all issues show 63 maps in the index). This atlas also accompanies the text volumes of the American edition of Pinkerton's Modern Geography published in Philadelphia by Conrad in 1804 (see our #3962). Phillips shows editions of 1804, 1805, 1812, and 1819. Uncolored maps bound into marble paper-covered boards with half leather.

Authors Maclure, William
Full Title (Title Page to) Observations on the Geology of the United States, explanatory of a Geological Map. By William Maclure. Read January 20th, 1809. (In) Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, Held at Philadelphia, for promoting Useful Knowledge. Volume VI. Published by C. and A. Conrad and Co. Philadelphia. ... Jane Aitken, Printer. 1809.
List No 2749A
Note 1st edition of the first geological map of U.S. A portion of a map of the U.S. by Samuel Lewis is used to make this map. The full sheet of paper was put on a larger plate and pulled, leaving the upper and right side without borders, as issued. Uncut and untrimmed, the map appears here with Maclure's original essay on the geology of the U.S. In 1817 Maclure published an expanded versus of his essay, using the small Melish Map of the U.S. as a base. Maclure was dissatisfied with the Lewis map because of its rendering of the mountains, and an errata slip is attached to the back of p 423 explaining this (and stating that originally it was intended to use a reduction of the Bradley U.S. map). See Marcou 1858 for more discussion of the Lewis map. Maclure did a Paris printing of the article and Map (using a map by Volney as a base) in 1811, in French. The Lewis map is most likely the Map of the U.S. published in the 2nd edition of Carey's American Atlas, 1809 (P-Maps p 876,Walsh). Maclure's map and essay are very rare. There is an inscription on the title page to "Mons. F.A. Michaux-Paris, from his friend..." Map bound into the back of paper covered boards with the title handwritten on the spine. Map in full color by geologic structure.

Authors Arrowsmith, Aaron, Lewis, Samuel
Full Title (Title Page to) A new and elegant general atlas, comprising all the new discoveries, to the present time. Containing sixty-three maps, drawn by Arrowsmith and Lewis. Intended to accompany the new improved edition of Morse's Geography, but equally well calculated to be used with his Gazetteer, or any other geographical work. Boston: Published by Thomas & Andrews. Sold at their bookstore, no. 45, Newbury-Street, and by the principal booksellers in the United States. May, 1812.
List No 0028B
Note There are seven new maps not in earlier editions (mostly of South America), and an equal number of the more obscure European maps have been dropped, the remaining maps have not been updated from the 1804 first edition. The oceans are not delineated with dark lines as in the 1804 and 1805 editions. Starting with the 1805 edition, Morse acquired this atlas (originally published in 1804 to accompany the Philadelphia edition of Pinkerton's Geography) for his Geography. Maps without color bound with paper-covered quarter leather boards.

List No 3493A
Note 1st edition. Notwithstanding the title, Nicholas Biddle completed the text after Lewis's suicide. The map and the written account of the expedition changed American mapping of the northwest by giving the first accurate depiction of the relationship of the sources of the Missouri, the sources of the Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains. The map was copied by Samuel Lewis from William Clark's original drawing, and was engraved by Samuel Harrison. The title of the map is "A Map of Lewis and Clark's Track, Across the Western Portion of North America From the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean ..." Maps are without color. In 2 volumes newly bound in full leather with the title "Lewis & Clark's Expedition ..." stamped in gilt on the spine.
