List No 4869B
Note This is the first edition (and perhaps the only edition). The title calls for ten maps, but there are actually 11 maps, one U.S. map and ten state maps. Each state map (actually, groups of states) is accompanied by an index sheet of places on the map. The state maps appear in the 1825 Universal atlas by Morse (see our #3812) where some of the maps are updated. Pasted on the cover is a slip with a lovely engraving of a globe with "Morse's new atlas of the United States on an improved plan..." on it. Scarce.

World Atlas
Authors Johnston, Alexander Keith, 1804-1871
Full Title (Half Title Page to) The royal atlas of modern geography, exhibiting, in a series of entirely original and authentic maps, the present condition of geographical discovery and research in the several countries, empires, and states of the world by Alexander Keith Johnston ... With a special index to each map. William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London. MDCCCLXI.
List No 0373B
Note First edition. This atlas was one of the best world atlases published in England in the second half of the 19th century. The North America map shows Colorado as a Territory - very up to date on U.S. political changes (most U.S. atlases do not show Colorado until 1862) for an English Atlas. Also shows Nevada, and a horizontal Arizona. However, the western U.S. map shows none of this -- its layout is pre-1860. Maps have a mixture of hand colored outline and printed blue color for water. Covers are half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Keith Johnston's royal atlas of modern geography" stamped in gilt on the cover, and "The Royal Atlas. Keith Johnston. W. Blackwood & Sons" on the spine.

Here it has been used as a separate newspaper insert to show the area burned in the fire of October, 1871. The portion of the title "Map Of Chicago Showing The Burnt District" is colored in red and overprinted on the map for dramatic effect, as is the area on the map that encompasses the burnt district. A scarce piece of ephemera.

Full Title (Title Page to) Hand Atlas Uber Alle Theile Der Erde Und Uber Das Weltgebaude. Herausgegeben Von Adolf Stieler. Gotha Justus Perthes.
List No 2449B
Note Stieler's Atlas is extraordinarily detailed. Close examination of the maps shows many features that one would expect to find only on much larger maps. This atlas was first published in 1817, with editions continuing well into the 20th century. It was one of the most comprehensive and best executed 19th century German atlases. In this edition, the maps are dated 1871-5, Phillips says this was issued in parts. 8 pages of text accompanies the index. Atlas is bound in half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Stieler's Hand Atlas" stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine. Maps are both hand painted and printed in full and outline color.

List No 1159B
Note Lithograph including 3 small views. This is very much in the Andreas Minnesota Atlas style - Warner and Beers in fact collaborated with Andreas and did the coloring on the Minnesota Atlas. This 1876 edition bears little resemblance to the earlier 1871 edition by Warner, Higgins & Beers (see our #3749) which used entirely different maps and had no views. Bound in half leather dark brown cloth covered boards with "Atlas of Illinois 1876 illustrated" stamped in gold on the front and blind stamped on the back.
