London, R. Laurie & J. Whittle, 1804)
List No 2310B
Note 60 maps on 76 sheets, lacks title page, has index. Maps dated 1794-1804. Many of the maps are updated from Kitchin's 36 sheet General Atlas, and the American Atlas. In 1796 and 1800 Laurie and Whittle published their New and Elegant Imperial Sheet Atlas (P6009, 6016), with 50 maps all, we believe on a single sheet, with a different map of the U.S. showing the American Flag above the cartouche. The Universal Atlas was their biggest production, with many of the maps multi sheet. Outline color. Atlas is bound in new quarter leather orange cloth covered boards with a red leather label on the spine stamped with "Atlas. Laurie. Whittle." in gilt.

World Atlas
Authors Arrowsmith, Aaron, Lewis, Samuel
Full Title (Title Page to) A new and elegant general atlas, comprising all the new discoveries, to the present time. Containing sixty-three maps, drawn by Arrowsmith and Lewis. Published by John Conrad & Co., Philadelphia, M. & J. Conrad & Co., Baltimore, Rapin, Conrad & Co., Washington City, Somervell & Conrad, Petersburg, Bonsal, Conrad & Co., Norfolk. 1804.
List No 2436B
Note First edition. This atlas was the first collaboration between Aaron Arrowsmith of London and Samuel Lewis of Philadelphia, one of the first such collaborations (and one of the few -- only David Burr and John Arrowsmith, and Henry Rogers and Keith Johnston come to mind). The title page says 63 maps in large type (some issues say 65 maps, all issues show 63 maps in the index). This atlas also accompanies the text volumes of the American edition of Pinkerton's Modern Geography published in Philadelphia by Conrad in 1804 (see our #3962). Phillips shows editions of 1804, 1805, 1812, and 1819. Uncolored maps bound into marble paper-covered boards with half leather.

Manuscript Map
Authors Bowen, Frances
Full Title (Title Page to) A general atlas done by Frances Bowen under the care of her sister Eliza in the year 1810.
List No 4871B
Note 37 manuscript maps of the world, done by a young lady, Frances Bowen, as part of a geographical exercise. The result is very fine -- these are some of the most delicate and well executed children's maps we have seen. The paper is watermarked J. Whatman 1808 and E & P 1804, both English watermarks, hence the assumption of English origin (furthermore the meridian is from London on the World and U.S. maps) although it could be American. There is a double page map of the World, another of the Mediterranean, maps of all the continents and countries of Europe and Asia, and maps of the United States, North America, West Indies, and South America. Rebound with marbled paper boards and quarter leather with "General Atlas, Frances Bowen - 1810" on the spine.

Authors Carey, Mathew
Full Title (Title Page to) Carey's General Atlas ... Philadelphia: Published By M. Carey. April, 1811. (Price Ten Dollars Plain - Twelve Dollars Coloured.) N.B. The maps marked with a star, are not in any London Atlas.
List No 4863B
Note This edition not in Phillips. This is the last edition of Carey's General Atlas that uses the maps from the 1795 American Atlas and 1795 General Atlas For Guthrie's Geography essentially unchanged, except for imprint date on some of them. Carey produced editions of the General atlas in 1800 (Yale), 1802 and 1804, those editions have maps with the same imprint dates (1794 and 1795) as the first editions, and add four maps: the Plat of the Seven Ranges, Map of Part of the N:W: Territory, St. Domingue, and Countries in which the Apostles traveled. In 1809 Carey reissued the American Atlas with the same set of American maps as the 1802 and 1804 General Atlas, and added a small map of Louisiana from Carey's Pocket Atlas of 1805. Several of the maps (British Possessions, United States, New York, and Virginia) bear 1809 imprints, although it is not obvious that any changes to the geography were made on any of the maps. This group of American maps from the 1809 American Atlas, along with the non American maps from the 1804 General Atlas, make up the 1811 General Atlas. The maps are bound on edge, large folio style, with the title pasted to the inside front cover (the Yale copy is the same). The Plat of the Seven Ranges is the scarce second issue (Wheat/Brun 677, with Carey's Imprint and Barker as engraver) and the large Map of Part of the N:W: Territory (Wheat/Brun 678) is the first (1796) and only issue. The Louisiana map is unusual in having extremely large blank borders. This 1811 General Atlas appears to be the scarcest of the pre 1814 editions of the General Atlas. In 1814 Carey did a major revision of the maps for "Carey's General Atlas, Improved and Enlarged" by making 32 "all new" maps and having the other 26 maps "retouched, and, where necessary, corrected." This atlas is bound in half leather, marbled paper covered boards.

Intended to accompany the new improved edition of Morse's Geography, but equally well calculated to be used with his Gazetteer, or any other geographical work. Boston: Published by Thomas & Andrews. Sold at their bookstore, no. 45, Newbury-Street, and by the principal booksellers in the United States. May, 1812.
List No 0028B
Note There are seven new maps not in earlier editions (mostly of South America), and an equal number of the more obscure European maps have been dropped, the remaining maps have not been updated from the 1804 first edition. The oceans are not delineated with dark lines as in the 1804 and 1805 editions. Starting with the 1805 edition, Morse acquired this atlas (originally published in 1804 to accompany the Philadelphia edition of Pinkerton's Geography) for his Geography. Maps without color bound with paper-covered quarter leather boards.

Philadelphia: Published By Bradford And Inskeep, New York. J. Maxwell, Printer. 1814 ... Vol. II.
List No 3493A
Note 1st edition. Notwithstanding the title, Nicholas Biddle completed the text after Lewis's suicide. The map and the written account of the expedition changed American mapping of the northwest by giving the first accurate depiction of the relationship of the sources of the Missouri, the sources of the Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains. The map was copied by Samuel Lewis from William Clark's original drawing, and was engraved by Samuel Harrison. The title of the map is "A Map of Lewis and Clark's Track, Across the Western Portion of North America From the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean ..." Maps are without color. In 2 volumes newly bound in full leather with the title "Lewis & Clark's Expedition ..." stamped in gilt on the spine.

List No 4577B
Note The first atlas made in the United States to employ standard color on the maps, while the Carey 1795 American Atlas and the Carey 1811 General Atlas list color as an option on the title page, we have never seen any copies of a pre 1814 Carey atlas with original color - they may exist, but would be rare - color was first employed as standard in this 1814 edition - all copies that we have seen have been colored. This edition is almost entirely new, with most of the maps reengraved. The 1804 edition before this was essentially the same as the 1795 first edition. The preface is dated March 17th, 1814. This edition should probably be called the second edition even though Carey does not label it as such, because Carey calls the 1818 edition the third edition. The Map of the United States is an updated copy of the U.S. map engraved by Henry Tanner that appeared in the first edition of Melish's Travels In the United States, published in 1812. This issue is late 1814. See our early 1814 for differences. Bound in quarter leather, brown paper covered boards.
