Full Title (Title Page to) History Of The Expedition Under The Command Of Captains Lewis And Clark, To The Sources Of The Missouri, Thence Across The Rocky Mountains And Down The River Columbia To The Pacific Ocean. Performed During The Years 1804-5-6. By order of the Government Of The United States. Prepared For The Press By Paul Allen, Esquire. In Two Volumes. Vol. I. Philadelphia: Published By Bradford And Inskeep, New York. J. Maxwell, Printer. 1814 ... Vol. II.
List No 3493A
Note 1st edition. Notwithstanding the title, Nicholas Biddle completed the text after Lewis's suicide. The map and the written account of the expedition changed American mapping of the northwest by giving the first accurate depiction of the relationship of the sources of the Missouri, the sources of the Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains. The map was copied by Samuel Lewis from William Clark's original drawing, and was engraved by Samuel Harrison. The title of the map is "A Map of Lewis and Clark's Track, Across the Western Portion of North America From the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean ..." Maps are without color. In 2 volumes newly bound in full leather with the title "Lewis & Clark's Expedition ..." stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note 2nd London edition. The map is the same as the 1st London edition, and is dated 1814. The text corrects many errors of the Philadelphia 1st edition. The map faithfully copies Samuel Lewis' map, except in the area of the "Southern Pass" where the pass itself is not named and the "Liah tan Bands" of Indians are not named. Neele engraved the map. List No 4866C
Note This is a very unusual Lucas atlas - according to Foster, only two copies are known. The engraved title page shows a globe and books on a table, with pages open listing Lucas' products: "Drawing Materials of every kind, Paper of all sizes, Mathematical Instruments, Globes, Maps, and Atlases of every description suitable for Colleges and Schools constantly for sale by the Publisher." It has 31 of the Tanner and Harrison engraved maps of the continents and foreign countries that appeared in the (1815) and (1816) "New And Elegant General Atlas" (only Netherlands bears Lucas' imprint, engraved by Young & Delleker, and is basically the same as the map that appears in the 1823 "General Atlas Containing Distinct Maps..." ). Of the remaining 36 maps, 8 are of South America and the West Indies and are unchanged in the 1823 atlas, the other 28 maps are in many cases early states of the new U.S. maps that appear in the 1823 atlas and replace the Tanner engraved U.S. maps of 1815 and 1816 atlases. They all have Lucas' imprint and show various engravers, Welch, Young & Delker, Cone & Freeman, Kneass, and Hufty. Compared to the early 1823 atlas (our #4584), 16 of the 28 U.S. maps are earlier issues, with only one being a later issue - New Hampshire shows Merrimack County (1823) which does not appear on the early 1823 atlas map (this was probably drawn in anticipation of creation). Of particular note are: Louisiana, a double page map engraved by Harrison and "Reduced from W. Darby's Four Sheet Map" which is dated 1817 as does not show Alabama or Arkansas Territory, and a map of "North Western and Michigan Territories" which is the same base map as the 1823 "Michigan Ter." but shows a much smaller Michigan in a configuration that Paullin dates as 1819 with a large North Western Territory extending to the west. Karpinski 94 incorrectly dates this map as "certainly as late as 1824" while mentioning that Phillips dates it 1819 (?). We cannot find the Phillips entry, but we bel

Note Long's map of the great plains and the rivers draining east from the Rocky Mountains was the best depiction done at that time and was used by other map makers (see Carey and Lea atlas). Maps bound separately. Atlas vol is dated 1822, text vols 1823, all as originally issued (see Howes). Both text volumes bound in leather with "Long's First Expedition" and volume number in gilt on spines. Atlas volume rebound with quarter leather and cloth covered boards. Note This is the scarce Senate issue with four maps by "Baron" Egloffstein. Egloffstein used a unique engraving process to achieve a superb rendering of topographical features, he used the same technique in the map is drew for Macomb's Report (see our #2699). Of the maps in Ives's Report Wheat said "The two maps were drawn by F.W. Egloffstein...the first...is one of his best." Rare in this form with the two additional geological maps in color wash. These only appear in the Senate issue. They are the same as the two "normal" maps that appear in the House and Senate issue, but they have colors overlaid to show geological formations. Report bound with blue cloth covered boards with title on spine.
