Pen-and-ink. A large atlas of outline maps by Dangeau, perhaps some of the earliest examples of outline maps used for teaching geography. This copy was put together by Dangeau. The maps were probably issued separately, and this atlas is one of the few bound copies. A note in French opposite the manuscript title page says that Buache had examples of these maps in his library. Some additions to the book were made by an owner subsequent to Dangeau's death in 1723. This copy was in the Phillipps Manuscript collection (no. 24790) and was sold by Sotheby's in 1903 and 1919. Of the 80 maps, 36 are 18 sets of 2 maps each, one a regular map and the other with blanks to be filled in by the student, with the regular maps having flaps on both sides with explanatory text, these maps teach basic notions of geography of the World, Europe, and France. 23 maps present administrative, both civic and ecclesiastical, divisions of France. 21 maps are of the countries which then formed the Holy Roman Empire of Germany, in the same manner as the maps of France. There are also 44 tables illustrating the history and genealogy of the French dynasties, four of these tables are beautiful illustrations of coats of arms. The atlas is bound in full dark green leather covered boards with title and ornate border embossed in gold, the spine is stamped with "Geographie de la France par l'Abbe de Dangeau 74. Cartes, 38 Planches." |

Clark II-41. Third and best edition. Streeter: "The most complete version of this work, in which form it was the most informative compilation on the West at the end of the 18th century." Complete text of Filson's Kentucky, Hutchins on Florida, etc., and much else. The Map of the State of Kentucky, by Elihu Barker is a slight reduction in size from the original by Carey, but not as great a reduction as the edition of the map that appeared in Carey's American Atlas and General Atlas in 1795 (cf Wheat & Brun 641, 642). The London version of the Barker map seems to have the same information as the Philadelphia, but they are very different in engraving style with the Philadelphia copy having an "American" look. Clark is critical of the accuracy of Imlay's letters, which were probably written in Europe after he fled Kentucky and financial problems. See DAB for another critical view of Mr. Imlay. |

The maps are better engraved than Colles, in a style closer to the English road books of John Cary (see our 1790 copy). Descriptive text precedes the maps, describing the routes and places of interest. Smither engraved one map, I. Draper, two. The rest by Harrison & Shallus. See "New Jersey Road Maps" by Howard Rice. A second edition appeared in 1804, same maps, text rewritten. Full leather covers with no title on cover or spine. |

1st edition. Notwithstanding the title, Nicholas Biddle completed the text after Lewis's suicide. The map and the written account of the expedition changed American mapping of the northwest by giving the first accurate depiction of the relationship of the sources of the Missouri, the sources of the Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains. The map was copied by Samuel Lewis from William Clark's original drawing, and was engraved by Samuel Harrison. The title of the map is "A Map of Lewis and Clark's Track, Across the Western Portion of North America From the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean ..." Maps are without color. Exquisite hand drawn maps of the states. Notwithstanding the title, this is a geography book hand drawn by a very promising student. It includes descriptions of Astronomical Geography, the Ptolemaic, Brahean and Copernican Systems, Comets, Great Circles, Equator, Meridian, Horizon, Colures, Tropics, Polar Circles, Zones, Climates, Latitude and Longitude, a section titled America, and 19 maps of the states with a descriptive page for each. The maps are copied from the 1805 edition of Carey's American Pocket Atlas, except for Ohio, which is from Arrowsmith and Lewis' Atlas, 1812, and Indiana, from an unknown source. The text is copied from Morse's Geography Made Easy, probably 1807, 11th edition, but certainly before the 12th edition (which was changed substantially), the text describing the maps is original. The only mystery is why she used such out of date sources if, in fact, she made this book in 1823. The penmanship is remarkable both in the execution of the maps and text. One of a kind. At the bottom of the title page: "presented to her son T.A. Post - Feb 4th 1872." Emma Willard led the Middlebury Female Academy from 1807-9, see DAB. |
