The first edition, listed in Phillips but not by Stevens and Tree or Wheat (both list 1824/25 as the first edition). A large impressive map showing with great accuracy the recent discoveries in the north west passage, but wildly off in the American southwest - Wheat: "a large and beautiful map, excellent in all respects save for its southwestern geography." In the southwest, Wyld adds many mountain ranges that were purely speculative - probably just to fill in blank spaces in the map (unlike Arrowsmith). In northwestern Texas is a curious note on the topography of the area attributed to "Mellish" which is copied from a pre-1822 edition of his large map of the United States. Comparing this edition to the derived map of 1846, "Mexico, the British Possessions...," one sees many changes in the northern areas and few in the southwest. Stevens and Tree list editions of 1824, 1827/8, 1838, and 1851/56. The 1824/25 edition adds a fold out flap of Mexico and Central America (WH copy). With outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into a brown marbled paper covered slip case with black leather spine with "Map Of North America" stamped in gilt. |

This is the second edition and the source of the White Gallaher and White map of Mexico issued in 1828, which was reissued by Disturnell in 1846. See our 1846 and 1847 issues of this Tanner map. This copy, although having several areas of loss, is significant in being the personal copy of Anthony Dey, one of the three principals of the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company. It is not signed by Dey, but was found with many of his personal papers including documents relating to the Company (see our #5177). On the map, the lands owned by the Company are outlined in manuscript. The Company controled a vast area of land in southeastern Texas and was one of the earliest to offer lands for sale to colonists - several of its promotional materials are listed in Streeter Texas. With 46 page "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map Of Texas, Oregon, and California With The Regions Adjoining;" the full color map is folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Texas, Oregon And California" in gilt. This was one of Mitchell's most popular and important pocket maps. Later editions were published in 1849, 1851, and 1852, as pocket maps and as insets to the large Reference and Distance Map of the United States. It was also issued separately as a wall map. This issue has Texas colored green, some copies have Texas colored brown (has the green changed over time?). The text has a catalogue for Mitchell's publications. Mitchell first issued this map as an inset to his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in the 1846 edition (see our copy). |

3rd edition. Martin shows 10 issues 1825-47. 1st edition was 1825 (see W.H. copy). The 1826 edition of this map (see our copy) was the base for the White, Gallaher & White "Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Mejico" of 1828, which was then copied by Disturnell in 1846 (see our copy). Originally, Tanner copied this map from the southwestern portion of his Map of North America. This 1846 edition has updated the western cartography to include Fremont's route and topography in California and the Rocky Mountains. Interestingly, Lake Tahoe is labeled Flag Lake, a name we have never seen before. The 1826 edition of this map established the more northerly boundary of New Mexico and Mexico that White Gallaher & White copied and was ultimately used by Disturnell in his map, and affected the treaty negotiations (see Martin). A rare guide and map (actually two maps on one sheet) that is a "cousin" of Mitchell's "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map of Texas, Oregon and California with The Regions Adjoining" also issued in 1846. Although Howes lists this under Mitchell, Mitchell's name is not on any part of the guide or map, Streeter lists it under Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., the publisher. There are 62 pages of text and several woodcut illustrations. The two full color maps are titled "Map of That Part of the West Coast of North America Comprising Oregon and Upper California" (26x20) and "Map of the State of Texas With Portions of the Adjoining Regions" (26x20) both printed on one sheet. These maps are earlier states of similar maps with slightly different titles that appear in Mitchell's School Atlas of 1846, maps #13 and #15. The School Atlas was published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. and the maps in it were copyrighted by Mitchell (this may be the reason Howes lists this "Geographical Description..." under Mitchell). The stamped leather covers 13.5x8 to both of these guides are the same with the exception that they are red in this copy. So I presume that Thomas, Cowperthwait issued this to compete with Mitchell's guide, yet somehow had Mitchell's cooperation in using the maps and the covers (assuming that Mitchell had some control over these). The two maps are impressive taken together and although smaller than Mitchell's "New Map of Texas, Oregon and California" they are very elegant. This guide is much rarer that Mitchell's guide and sold for two and one half times more at the Streeter sale. |

The first Disturnell edition, and the second Martin edition (after the 1828 White Gallaher and White first edition). Wheat calls this edition a "famous" map. This edition is distinguished by the absence of a trail line running directly from San Antonio to Austin, Texas, that appears on the third Martin edition. Compared to our seventh edition (see our # 2541), there are substantially fewer towns, roads, and physical features both in Mexico and the U.S. The two profiles in the Pacific and two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico of the 1847 edition are not present. The covers and paste down statistics are the same as our 1847 edition. The map was printed from the same plate as the 1828 White Gallaher and White edition, evidenced by the faint copyright notice in the lower right corner under the neat line, Disturnell made many updates to the 1828 edition, and its republication by him was occasioned by the outbreak of the Mexican War. White Gallaher and White copied and slightly enlarged Henry Tanner's 1826 Map of the United States of Mexico (see our #5176). Martin lists twenty three editions of Disturnell's map. A significant difference between the Disturnell map and the earlier editions by White Gallaher and White, and Tanner, is the moving of the boundary line between Alta and Baja California about 70 miles further north toward San Diego, which was then used as the boundary in the treaty to end the Mexican War. Very rare map with no reference to it found in any of the normal bibliographies. The date is estimated. Proposed railway lines are shown to and from San Francisco to New Orleans and Napolian (sic). The map has been distorted severely with San Francisco much too far east. Napoleon, Arkansas, now defunct (why?), according to Baldwin and Thomas' Gazetteer of 1854, was the capital of Desha County. It was situated on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Arkansas. The population was about 1,000 people, and steamboats ran three times a week to Little Rock. Why it was placed so prominently on the map is unknown. Perhaps it was vying to be a terminus for the railroad. Texas is shown at a highly detailed level. The map is in color and folds into brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Map of Mexico Showing The Seat Of War" on the front cover in gilt. |

Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846, this map, Tehuantepec maps, 1851, Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x10 with "Map Of The Seat Of War In Mexico." stamped in gilt. |

The seventh edition known as the "Treaty Map." This map was "the official cartographic reference consulted in negotiating the peace treaty of February 2, 1848, which terminated the Mexican war..." (Martin). The first of seven issues in 1847, this is easily identifiable by having only two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico (later issues have four). The twelfth edition was also used as a treaty map. This copy folds into red cloth covers 15x10, with "Mexico" stamped in gold, and with "Statistics of the Republic of Mexico" pasted on the inside front cover. Signature of Cornelius S. 2nd edition, 1st 1847 issue, without the lower "Road Between Mexico & Vera Cruz" inset but with an upper right inset of "The late Battlefield" (Monterey). The 1st edition was 1846, also without the lower inset (Streeter 3868). The 2nd edition is this copy, almost the same as the 1846 issue (some towns added in Northern Mexico), but dated 1847 (not in Streeter or Wheat). The 3rd edition is dated 1847 and adds the lower inset map mentioned above (Streeter 3869, Wheat Gold 35). A much simpler map than the Map of Texas, Oregon and California of 1846, with no engraver credit. Full color, with Texas outlined in red, folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Mexico" in gilt. |

This edition adds an inset map of "Harbor of Vera Cruz," and "Dates of Battles" listing seven battles of the Mexican War beginning with Palo Alto May 8, 1846 and ending with Vera Cruz, March 22 to 27, 1847. Gen Kearny's route from Ft. Leavenworth to Santa Fe is shown and labeled, along with other routes of battle (unlabeled) running from Texas south to La Puebla, Mexico. This is the last edition published by Tanner, according to Martin. It is the best edition in terms of showing the events of the Mexican War. See our 1846, third edition, #2822. Folded into dark brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Tanner's Travelling Map of Mexico" stamped in gold. Full color. |

Rare reissue of 1842 Greenleaf Universal Atlas. Many changes from the 1842 edition: Florida a State, Michigan entirely redrawn, Mexican War results on North American map, Mexico, Texas, Oregon changes to show 1846 boundary with Canada, Missionary stations listed on the Hemispheres, and many new railroads, counties, boundaries, etc. There are more changes between this edition and the 1842, than between the 1842 and Burr's 1836. Not in Karpinski, which is strange because Michigan is totally redrawn, not in Phillips or any other reference. There is also an 1849 edition (property of C.W.) that has similar maps except the Mexico map does not reflect the Mexican War boundary - probably he was running out of maps and this was at the bottom of the stack! Has the same Geography text in the rear, unchanged. The Wisconsin and Iowa map in this copy differs from an 1848 in Fitch Catalogue 48, #314, in having Mandan Dist. instead of Missouri Territory in the Fitch, making this copy probably later (the 1842 has Missouri Territory). Burr's name is no longer on the map of Illinois. Maps are in full color. Bound in half leather, floral patterned blue cloth covered boards with "The Universal Atlas" stamped in gold.
