These maps were also published in Carey's American edition of Guthrie's Geography (1795) and most of the maps say "engraved for Carey's American edition of Guthrie's improved." The maps were again used for the 1796 edition of Carey's General Atlas, unchanged except for the Tennessee map, which is titled "Tennassee State" instead of "Tennassee Government" which is the title in both the American Atlas and the Guthrie Atlas - see Wheat and Brun, and has several counties delineated in the eastern part of the state which do not show in the 1795 edition of the map. NMM 480 (American Atlas) has "Tennassee State" indicating that Carey was not consistent. This atlas was the model for John Reid's American Atlas of 1796. This copy's maps have very strong impressions. Rebound quarter leather, marbled paper covered boards. |

First edition. Full color. This beautiful, rare map is the first to show the entire Louisiana Territory as part of the United States, both in the delineated boundaries on the map and in the table showing the possessions of the United States: "Province, Ceded by France 30 Apr. 1803, Louisiana." The Bradley "Map of The United States..." of June 2nd, 1804, is the first map to mention the event: ôThe French call the country West of Conecuh River Louisiana & have ceded it to the United States," but the Bradley map shows only a small portion of Louisiana Territory just west of the Mississippi River. Wilkinson follows Arrowsmith's geography (from his "New Discoveries..." map of 1802) in the Rocky Mountain and the Oregon River areas, but adds new settlements and place names not on Arrowsmith's map along the northwest coast. Franklinia is shown between Tennessee and North Carolina. Wheat trashes the 1824 issue (which is unchanged from the 1804) as hopelessly out of date, but this 1804 issue was not seen by Wheat and is very accurate and forward looking for its period. The large folio General Atlas that this map appeared in is elusive: it is not listed in any references (Phillips lists only Wilkinson's smaller General Atlas issues, even though he refers to one or two issues as folio in size). Wilkinson mentions publishing it in parts, with eleven maps completed by 1808 and thirty five completed by 1823 (noted on the index pages of his quarto General and Classical Atlases of those dates). It seems to be as scarce as this North America map. |

Melish, in his first edition of "A Geographical Description of the United States," (1816) wrote of his plans to publish a series of sheet maps on a uniform scale that would form an atlas of the United States. He reiterated this plan in the 2nd and 3rd editions of the "Geographical Description" and expanded upon it in "A Geographical Description of the World" in 1818. According to Ristow, this plan to publish the maps at the same scale was "a new and revolutionary idea that facilitated size comparisons." Indiana was the first to be published in 1817. Tennessee was published in 1817. The Illinois map followed in 1818, with an "improved" edition in 1819. No mention is made in any sources of this map, "improved to 1820." Alabama was completed in 1818, Mississippi in 1819, and Louisiana in 1820. Only these six maps were completed before Melish died in 1822. A copy of the 1818 Illinois map is held at the Library of Congress. The 1819 map is held at the Newberry Library and the National Archives. No copy of the 1820 edition has been mentioned in the references. The map is in outline color by county with township and survey lines shown. |
