State I of this map (State II lists only J. Reid as publisher). This map is taken from the first official plan of Washington published by Andrew Ellicott in 1792 (see Wheat & Brun 531). The Reid map is not an exact copy, with the title moved from the upper right to the lower left, several notes not included, and other elements moved. An exact copy of Reid's map appears in the London edition of Winterbotham's "View of the United States of America" (see our #3885). Howes gives precedence to the London edition, so it is not clear if Reid or Russell copied the Ellicott first. The Reid American Atlas index does not call for the Washington map, leading to the assumption that it was added to some copies afterwards, and speculation that it may have been sold as a separate. First edition. This map is an extensive revision and redrawing on the same scale of Bouchette's 1831 map of Upper and Lower Canada (see our #4436). The map is extended east to include all of Nova Scotia and further north to include Anticosti Island. New inset maps are added of Environs of Montreal, Lake Superior, and the Niagara District, and the other insets of Newfoundland and British North America are thoroughly revised. The changes to the U.S./Canadian boundaries in Oregon (1846) and Maine (1842) are shown, as well as the first three, short Canadian railways (compared to a large number shown underway in the U.S.). In addition, there are many other revisions to the main map, well documented by Winearls. Copyrights are given for Canada and New York. NMM 479 is a folio atlas version of the six sheets of this map issued in 1853. Winearls lists two later editions of the map in 1852 and 1853. To us, the most interesting aspect of this edition is the fact it was engraved and printed in New York by Sherman and Smith, rather than in London by J. & C. Walker and James Wyld as with the 1831 edition. The style is very definitely "New York" - bold and visually striking. This is the second large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - after the map of the Canadas by David Taylor, 1834 (see our #4691). It is a most beautiful and rare map. Full color by county. Map is dissected into three sheets of 16 sections each. Map has silk edging, and folds with green plain end sheets into a burgundy leather slip case with "Bouchette's Map Of British North America 1846." stamped in gold. |

Entered in 1856 and first issued in 1857. With an inset map of the World, and views of the U.S. Capital and the Mormon Temple at Salt Lake City, tables of Distances and Statistics from the Census of 1850, and a Note and list of Authorities which reads in part "The part of this Map, between the Mississippi River and Pacific Ocean, was taken (with the consent of Capt. A.A. Humphreys) principally from a map compiled from the following authorities by Lieut. G.K. Warren, Topl Engrs...In the Office of Pacific Rail Road Surveys, War Department." The map referred to must be the 1855 edition (see our copy) of Warren's General Map for the Pacific Railroad Reports. The list of Authorities is almost identical to the list on that map. Also, the map details of the west used in Johnson's map follow the 1855 edition in scope. Karrow lists many issues of this map from 1857 to 1861, with the views varying in each issue, and with Colton taking over as publisher in 1860. See our late Colton edition of 1890 (our #5150). Most of the maps come from Colton's 1859 edition of the General Atlas, published by Johnson and Browning, indicating the Johnson connection, some do not come from this atlas, and their sources are: the New England maps (scale 1" = 9 miles) come from Colton's map of New England and then the sub-maps of Vermont and New Hampshire, Mass/Conn/R.I., the Ohio/Indiana is still a mystery, all the 1" = 24 miles maps (Iowa, Kentucky, etc.) come from Colton's Map of the United States and the Canadas, originally published by J. Calvin Smith in 1843 (see W. Heckrotte's copies and his list of editions), and the Colton General Atlas maps used by Johnson come from Colton's Travellers Series of maps - see our copies of Penn., Indiana. Colton mentions "The National Atlas of the United States, constructed from the Public Surveys..large Folio" as in preparation in his 1855 catalogue, this may be the embryonic Johnson Atlas. Colton used his wall maps "cut up" for pocket maps and Atlases. Johnson's maps of S. America, Europe, Africa, and (in the first edition, first issue, only) China, East Indies etc., all come from D. Griffing Johnson's Map of the World, 1847. These atlas maps are updated (esp. Africa). Colton took over the publication of the World Map in 1849, issued editions to 1868 (Ristow p318). Also, Johnson's N. America map is the inset N. America in Smith's Map of the U.S., the Canadas, etc. This first issue of Johnson's Family Atlas differs from the later 1860 edition in a small N.Y. (from the Colton U.S. map), small Texas, and many of the maps have fewer views or no views or different configurations. Clearly, this was a first attempt that was refined later in the year. Another issue of this same edition was published in Richmond, Virginia, the home town of Browning (I.L.).
