State I of this map (State II lists only J. Reid as publisher). This map is taken from the first official plan of Washington published by Andrew Ellicott in 1792 (see Wheat & Brun 531). The Reid map is not an exact copy, with the title moved from the upper right to the lower left, several notes not included, and other elements moved. An exact copy of Reid's map appears in the London edition of Winterbotham's "View of the United States of America" (see our #3885). Howes gives precedence to the London edition, so it is not clear if Reid or Russell copied the Ellicott first. The Reid American Atlas index does not call for the Washington map, leading to the assumption that it was added to some copies afterwards, and speculation that it may have been sold as a separate. Scarce. |

Updated from M. Carey's 1818 edition General Atlas. Many changes from the 1818 edition: new towns and many new roads. Robert DeSilver's name with the date of 1827 is printed below the map. DeSilver did an Atlas in 1822 using the Carey maps (William Mayer has the only copy we have ever seen, it is not mentioned anywhere else), which he acquired, we presume, from Carey when Carey retired in 1822 (Ristow). The six maps listed here we acquired together (Penn, Ohio, Maryland, Conn, Georgia, and Virginia), an additional map of Massachusetts is the same vintage, but folded into pocket map covers, we acquired it separately. All seven maps have the same water mark, the same outline color by county, and all were clearly issued as separates, only Pennsylvania and Virginia have the DeSilver imprint, and only these two and Georgia have substantial updates from the earlier Carey imprints. Perhaps in 1827 he decided to reissue his 1822 Carey maps as Pocket Maps and separate maps. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians: London and Philadelphia. |

1st ed. "Military Map and Gazetteer of the Southern States" on verso. Large scale full color map showing only the southern states, with counties, railroads and cities shown. This map was produced in wall map, pocket map and sheet form. This presentation has Lloyd's "newspaper" on the verso which describes the counties of Virginia and Missouri, Southern Coast Surveys and is dated September 7, 1861. On the front page Lloyd states that the Map and Gazetteer "will be issued every Saturday morning at 8 o'clock." It is not known if any other issues were printed - Stephenson lists only this issue. There is also an advertisement for Lloyd's "$100,000 Topographical Map of the State of Virginia" ("the only real good map ever made in America") on both the map and the newspaper on the verso and an ad for Lloyd's Map of Missouri. See our copy of Lloyd's advertisement for this map issued earlier in the year. |

Another edition, not listed, adds soldiers to the left and right of the main map, illustrating Hardee's tactics (of fighting). The large map is entered in 1859, and the whole production is entered in 1861. |

The first edition appeared in January of 1862 (Stephenson 466) and extended further south to include Fredericksburg, this second edition extends south to Morrisburg. "Data Used in Compilation" appears in the upper left sheet and shows Surveys, Reconnaissances, Informations, Maps, Manuscripts, and Additions and Corrections. Folded originally, now flat. Virginia is shown as East Virginia. Shows Oil Works, Iron Mines, Coal Mines, as well as several manuscript notions on the location of coal and oil deposits. An attractive map with ornate decorative border, and most likely the first separately published map of this new state. Outline color showing state borders. Not in Stephenson. Tooley lists an (1862) edition (although West Virginia was created in 1863) and the 1864. Tooley also lists a map of Texas by this same Richardson, 1860 - we believe this is incorrect - the Texas map was by Willard Richardson (see Day, Maps of Texas). Scarce. |
