Full color map with no publisher name, and date, Wheat says Haven, 1846. This copy was published late in 1846, see our early 1846 copy for a different issue. Streeter 3871 attributes this to Ensign and Thayer due to its similarity to their 1848 Ornamental Map of the U.S. and Mexico (Streeter 3872). Wheat says that this map is the source of Haven's broadside map of 1846 (Wheat 26) and the Journal of Commerce map of 1848 (Wheat 47), which use the top 2/3 and bottom 2/3 respectively, of this map, and therefore Wheat attributes this to Haven. The 1846 date is the latest date in the statistics on the states that flank the map. Wheat mentions that he found a copy in Farnham's Life and Travels in California, and our copy has written on the back in ms "Life and Travels in California," so this may be another place it was used, or what it was originally made for (see our copy of the Farnham with the map). See High Ridge 15 for two issues of the Haven 1846 broadside (Streeter 3865, 3866). includes "panoramic view of Oregon and California, and state seals. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. |

Other changes include the title having the same words but arranged differently, the statistical tables having California on the left instead of the right, and the note in Texas says that Mexico claims its boundary as the Nueces River. The first map of Mexican War issued by Mitchell and one of the earliest separately published map of the conflict. It shows the area between Monterey and the Rio Grande, with two inset maps, one of the battlefield at Monterey and the other showing the general area of Mexico and Texas. There is a printed note: "The Publisher has in preparation and will issue on the 10th of November, 1846, a Map of Mexico (including the States of Yucatan & Upper California) the size & price of which will be the same as the present map." This is referring to the 1846 issue of Mitchell's "Map of Mexico..." (see our #3119). Another copy of this map was printed without the publisher's note. Map is without color. Relief shown by hachures. |

| Note |
Compare to 1846, '47 Ornamental Map by H. Phelps. This copy is the same as the Streeter 3872, but a slight variant of the Wheat Gold 38 (Changes in the Cincinnati, Boston and Buffalo addresses). Wheat suggests that the map is a cerograph or a wood cut - we believe it is a cerograph. This piece celebrates the U.S. victory over Mexico and shows graphically the growth of U.S. territory from coast to coast. Views of the Contemplated Oregon Railroad from New York to the Pacific Coast, Portraits of Generals Taylor and Scott, etc. A table of Distances in Mexico is in the lower right corner of the map. Rufus Blanchard's name appears in the lower left under the Great Temple. There was an edition of 1855 by Ensign, Bridgman and Fanning (see our copy and see Streeter 3892 for 1854, also by EB&F). Full color. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and washington, D.C. |

This map is similar to Mitchell's "Map of Mexico" but it is focused on the California Gold Region, which has been colored bright yellow. Because most of the California cartography is closer to 1847 when the map was copyrighted, Wheat says "this is an example of the rather common practice of 'doctoring up' old maps for sale to the gold-seekers." Full color map. Includes text, references, table of distances, and view of Castle of San Juan d'Ulloa. Shows locations of some battlefields in the U.S. War with Mexico. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Washington, D.C. and Greenwich. |

See our #3507 and #170 for related maps. This map shows most of Alaska but not as far north as #3507. It is not clear where this map came from - it was folded to fit into a quarto sized book (not present here), and it may have been in the 1852 issue of the United States Register by John Disturnell, as #3507 was in the 1854 United States Register (see our 1861 U.S. Register by Disturnell with a smaller Colton Map). This map was also published in 1852 to accompany volume one of Richard Swainson Fisher's "The Book of The World", NY, J.H. Colton, two volumes, 8vo. It has the inset map of the gold regions, and the inset has been updated with many towns, etc. The main map has also been updated in the West, showing Utah, New Mexico, California, reduced Texas, etc. There is no inset map of South America as appears in the 1849 issue, and this map extends much further to the north to include most of Canada and about half of Alaska. All three of these maps were probably derived from Colton's Map of North America that is listed in his catalogues from 1851 to 1855 and is somewhat larger, we assume because of decorative borders. Strangely, that map is not found in any references. Without color. Includes view: Pyramid Lake, Upper California (i.e., Nevada) |

First edition. The cartography is elegant and understated. The eighteen maps and text comprise a general atlas of North America, with special emphasis on Texas and California. The Texas map shows in colored outline the lands granted to the Adelsverein and has the post road from Indianola to New Braunfels marked in red. The map of Oregon, California, Utah, New Mexico, etc. shows the gold regions in California and has an inset map of San Francisco Bay. There is also a striking separate map of San Francisco Bay titled "Bai San Francisco und Vereinigung des Sacramento mit dem San Joaquin." It has a lovely inset view of San Francisco and shows the routes by river to Sacramento and San Joaquin. Also issued under the title of "Kartenwerk zu dr. Karl Andree's Nord-Amerika," see P1231. Compare to 1846, '47, and '48 issues. Derived from the 1848 edition by Ensigns and Thayer, this edition uses the same U.S. base map (cerograph) updated to show changes in the western U.S., and changing the map title to "Map of the United States and Mexico" (eliminating "Including Oregon, Texas and the Californias"). Portraits of Lafayette and Franklin flank Washington (replacing Gen. Taylor and Gen. Scott). "Distances in Mexico" is removed from the lower left of the map. The rest of the broadside is unchanged. Seven years after the Mexican War, the patriotic themes of expansion continue in this map. Full color map. Includes "Panoramic view from New York to the Pacific Ocean". Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. |

Map of Texas and part of New Mexico compiled in the Bureau of Topgraphl. Eng'rs. chiefly for military purposes, 1857 ... Lith. of Ritchie & Dunnovant. Printed at H.F. Walling's Map Establishment, 90 Fulton St., New York. |

| Note |
Probably the best and most detailed military map of Texas issued before the Civil War - rivers, roads, explorer's routes, water holes, forts and towns are shown. Includes "List of authorities." The Warren map of 1857 (see our #4013) incorporates much of this information, with even more information from this map appearing on the Warren map of 1858 (see our #2750). A later version of this map appeared in the Atlas To Accompany The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (see our #1780) as plate 54. Martin and Martin incorrectly state that the map was not published until it appeared in the "Atlas to Accompany..." This is the only government map published by H.F. Walling that we know of. This copy came from a group of about ten copies found with the J.D. Graham papers. Without color. Scarce. Relief shown by hachures. |

| Note |
This is an exceptionally attractive map of Texas on the eve of the Civil War. It was issued with Richardson's Texas Almanac of 1861 or possibly the 1862 issue (almanac not present). Railroads completed and in progress are particularly well delineated, and a box of text in the lower left corner (pasted on top of an earlier printing) lists the completed railroads and their proposed extensions as well as one canal, the Galveston Bay and Brazos River. In the lower right is an inset map of the proposed route of the Arkansas Railroad. The topography, coasts and rivers are accurately delineated, with the source being the outstanding Map of Texas and part of Mexico, 1857, issued by the Bureau of Topographical Engineers (see our #5141). Pressler's Map of the State of Texas, 1858, is a secondary source, as is J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas which was published in Desilver's 1859 (Mitchell's) New Universal Atlas (see our #4557). Richardson's map is a serious production, far more up to date than the Colton, Johnson, or Desilver/Mitchell atlas maps of 1861, and more accurate in west Texas, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico than the Pressler 1858 Texas (although Pressler issued an 1862 revised edition, not seen by us, that may be much improved). The first issue of Richardson's map appeared in the 1859 edition of the Texas Almanac, with the map dated 1859, copyright 1858 (Winkler 1052), again in the 1860 Almanac, with the map dated 1860, and our copy, dated 1861 and presumably appearing in the 1861 Almanac (Rosenberg 322B states that the Almanacs for 1857, and 1862-65 did not contain maps). Two other maps appeared in the Richardson Almanacs: J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas (from Desilver's atlas) in the 1858 Almanac (Winkler 886 note) and Richardson's New Map of Texas, published by G.W. and C.B. Colton (Day 428 - about the same size as the Colton atlas map of 1867 and possibly related) and issued in the 1867 Almanac. Desilver stopped map publishing ar |

Copyright 1864. The first separate map of West Virginia listed in Phillips. No other references found - precedes the two West Virginia oil maps listed in Streeter (3919, 3924). Folded originally, now flat. Virginia is shown as East Virginia. Shows Oil Works, Iron Mines, Coal Mines, as well as several manuscript notions on the location of coal and oil deposits. An attractive map with ornate decorative border, and most likely the first separately published map of this new state. Outline color showing state borders. Not in Stephenson. Tooley lists an (1862) edition (although West Virginia was created in 1863) and the 1864. Tooley also lists a map of Texas by this same Richardson, 1860 - we believe this is incorrect - the Texas map was by Willard Richardson (see Day, Maps of Texas). Scarce. |
