Lacks top & bottom middle sheets. An incomplete copy, with the missing two center sheets supplied in facsimile (from the Clements Library copies of the 1807 issue). Seven sheets in all: the 1807 and 1818 issues of the left top (the "Ohio" sheet) and bottom, and the right bottom, and the 1818 sheet of the right top (view of Richmond - which is colored). No copies of the center sheets were found with this group. Madison was first cousin of President Madison, was President of William and Mary College and organized the production of this map. William Davis drafted the map and William Prentis supervised the surveying and compiling. A second issue was redrafted by Davis in 1818, after Madison's death. It served as the most authoritative map of Virginia until 1827 (when the Wood/Boye map was published), and was the first comprehensive road map of the state. Includes explanatory remarks, showing State line, county line, towns, roads, and selected buildings. Relief shown by hachures. |

Updated from M. Carey's 1818 edition General Atlas. Many changes from the 1818 edition: new towns and many new roads. Robert DeSilver's name with the date of 1827 is printed below the map. DeSilver did an Atlas in 1822 using the Carey maps (William Mayer has the only copy we have ever seen, it is not mentioned anywhere else), which he acquired, we presume, from Carey when Carey retired in 1822 (Ristow). The six maps listed here we acquired together (Penn, Ohio, Maryland, Conn, Georgia, and Virginia), an additional map of Massachusetts is the same vintage, but folded into pocket map covers, we acquired it separately. All seven maps have the same water mark, the same outline color by county, and all were clearly issued as separates, only Pennsylvania and Virginia have the DeSilver imprint, and only these two and Georgia have substantial updates from the earlier Carey imprints. Perhaps in 1827 he decided to reissue his 1822 Carey maps as Pocket Maps and separate maps. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians: London and Philadelphia. |

Second edition (first edition 1826) of one of the earliest locally produced maps of Northeastern Ohio. Streeter on the first edition: "the finest map produced by an Ohio engraver and pioneer printer." Streeter incorrectly names the mapmaker as "Savery Pitt." Actually, in the lower right corner of the map the engraver is listed as "Savory, Pitt." HRB located a William Savery in Pittsburgh working as an engraver during this period, so we assume he engraved this map. The publisher of the 1826 edition was William Sumner. There is text and population statistics under the map, regarding the history of the area. Harris' Pittsburgh business directory for the year 1837, and the Standard history of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania give name as William Savory (see "Map of the Western Reserve including the Fire Lands in Ohio" at http://web.ulib.csuohio.edu/SpecColl/maps/SavoryPitt.html. |

| Note |
A promotional plat map for a city that never "got off the ground" (or map). At the top of the plat for the city is a park-like reserve titled "Golden Spring Reserve" and there is a vignette of an Indian sitting next to the Golden Spring. Central Bluffs does not appear on any other maps of the period, except for a very small settlement called "Golden Spring P.O." which shows in the Nebraska State atlas of 1885 - apparently the city never happened and the hapless early lot buyers became Golden Springs. The promotion was probably based on the expectation of a major railroad crossing the Missouri from Iowa and heading west (shown as the Nebraska Central Railroad and the Lyons and Iowa Central Railroad on the inset map) right through the proposed town. This route shows briefly in the late 1850's maps, then disappears, another railroad promotion that did not happen. And so went the city of Central Bluffs. Nearby and closer to the Missouri, a Central City appears briefly on some maps of the period, then also disappears. It may be related to this development. Map is without color. |
