A plan of a battle at Hubbardton, Vermont, the only important battle fought in Vermont during the Revolution. Nebenzahl: "This is a typical Faden battle plan. It presents clearly in color the positions and movements of the opposing units upon a topographical map, which enables the viewer to see where terrain features affected the action." The plan is normally seen on thin paper, folded, as one of six maps included in John Burgoyne's "A State of the Expedition from Canada..." London, 1780. This copy is on heavy paper, unfolded, and may have been in Faden's Atlas of Battles of the American Revolution, published in London in 1793 and again, with remaindered maps, by Bartlett & Welford in New York, circa 1845 (see P1337, #25). Relief shown by hachures. Hand col. Scale 200 paces to an in. |

Reid, John |
| Full Title |
Plan of the City of Washington in the Territory of Columbia ceded by the States of Virginia And Maryland to the United States of America and by them established as the Seat of their Government, after the Year 1800. Rollinson sculp. N. York. Published by J. Reid L. Wayland and C. Smith 1795. |
| List No |
5160.000 |
| Note |
State I of this map (State II lists only J. Reid as publisher). This map is taken from the first official plan of Washington published by Andrew Ellicott in 1792 (see Wheat & Brun 531). The Reid map is not an exact copy, with the title moved from the upper right to the lower left, several notes not included, and other elements moved. An exact copy of Reid's map appears in the London edition of Winterbotham's "View of the United States of America" (see our #3885). Howes gives precedence to the London edition, so it is not clear if Reid or Russell copied the Ellicott first. The Reid American Atlas index does not call for the Washington map, leading to the assumption that it was added to some copies afterwards, and speculation that it may have been sold as a separate. Scarce. |

| Full Title |
Map of Morris's Purchase or West Geneseo In the State of New York. Exhibiting Part of the Lakes Erie and Ontario, the Straights of Niagara, Chautauque Lake and all the principal Waters, the Boundary lines of the several Tracts of Land purchase by the Holland Land Company, William and John Willink and others ... by Joseph & B. Ellicott 1800. To The Holland Land company their General Agents Theophilus Cazenove & Paul Bush Esquires, This Map Is respectfully inscribed by the Authors. 1804. |
| List No |
3712.000 |
| Note |
1st edition was 1800. Vail says this was the "Most important map of the Holland Land Company, published for the promotion of sale of their Western New York lands." Nestler calls it "Probably the most important map of western NY when Buffalo was still known as New Amsterdam, and when land companies were luring settlers to this new frontier." The map is highly detailed, showing every tributary of every tributary of every stream. All the township and range lines are laid down, every town located, all reservations shown and all roads indicated. One has the impression that the ground was expertly surveyed with care and diligence. The Holland land holding comprised well over three million acres, not a modest subdivision! Ellicott was the company's agent at Batavia for many years. Map is without color. |

| Note |
Scarce, unusual map of Auburn, New York. I can find no references to this beautiful map. A plan of the village is in the map's center, with large views of the Theological Seminary and the State Prison on the left and right corners. Nine views of public buildings are on the right, some of which have "J.J. Hagaman, Arch." written below. I presume this is our map maker Hagaman. Beneath the title is a profile of the Erie Canal. The entire map has a stark, black and white aspect, heightened by the view of the State Prison which has a black sky above it. |

Phillips attributes this to J.G. Bruff, although his name is not listed on the map. This is a detailed map of the Valley of Mexico with some of its information and profile taken from the larger Disturnell "Treaty Map." There are several very interesting manuscript notations on the map made by an unknown (initials "O.L.H.") contemporary observer. Map is without color. |
