Thos. Bowen, sculpt. 1773. (with 6 inset maps). |

| Note |
The maker of this map, James Cook, surveyor of South Carolina and former marine surveyor, is not to be confused with the Pacific explorer, Captain James Cook. In 1770, James Cook was commissioned by the South Carolina provincial government to make a new survey of the entire province and publish a map, which he completed in 1773. Cummings refers to the map as "the most detailed and accurate printed map of South Carolina, especially for the interior, yet to appear" and further states that "very few copies of this fine map are extant." It provided much of the detail for the later maps by Henry Mouzon and John Stuart. Sellers and Van Ee call it "one of the most important maps in the cartography of the state until the early nineteenth century." It is excessively rare, with only five copies identified in United States institutions, and one in the British Museum. There are two states of this first and only issue, distinguished by the presence in the second state of an additional imprint "Publish'd according to Act of Parliament July 7th. 1773 and Sold by H. Parker in Cornhill" under the neat line. This copy is the first state, with two of the other six copies being first state as well. There are six inset maps: Beaufort, Camden, Georgetown, Port Royal, Charles Town, and Harbour of Charles Town. The main map is very detailed, showing land owners in profusion. Along the coast are many navigation notes, indicative of Cook's maritime background. This appears to have been Cook's only major map production, his other work is limited to three harbor charts published in 1766 (illustrated by Black): A Draught of Port Royal Harbour (similar to the Port Royal inset map on the South Carolina 1773), A Draught of the Harbour of Halifax, and A Draught of West Florida. |

A plan of a battle at Hubbardton, Vermont, the only important battle fought in Vermont during the Revolution. Nebenzahl: "This is a typical Faden battle plan. It presents clearly in color the positions and movements of the opposing units upon a topographical map, which enables the viewer to see where terrain features affected the action." The plan is normally seen on thin paper, folded, as one of six maps included in John Burgoyne's "A State of the Expedition from Canada..." London, 1780. This copy is on heavy paper, unfolded, and may have been in Faden's Atlas of Battles of the American Revolution, published in London in 1793 and again, with remaindered maps, by Bartlett & Welford in New York, circa 1845 (see P1337, #25). Relief shown by hachures. Hand col. Scale 200 paces to an in. |

1st edition was 1800. Vail says this was the "Most important map of the Holland Land Company, published for the promotion of sale of their Western New York lands." Nestler calls it "Probably the most important map of western NY when Buffalo was still known as New Amsterdam, and when land companies were luring settlers to this new frontier." The map is highly detailed, showing every tributary of every tributary of every stream. All the township and range lines are laid down, every town located, all reservations shown and all roads indicated. One has the impression that the ground was expertly surveyed with care and diligence. The Holland land holding comprised well over three million acres, not a modest subdivision! Ellicott was the company's agent at Batavia for many years. Map is without color. |

Updated from M. Carey's 1818 edition General Atlas. Many changes from the 1818 edition: new towns and many new roads. Robert DeSilver's name with the date of 1827 is printed below the map. DeSilver did an Atlas in 1822 using the Carey maps (William Mayer has the only copy we have ever seen, it is not mentioned anywhere else), which he acquired, we presume, from Carey when Carey retired in 1822 (Ristow). The six maps listed here we acquired together (Penn, Ohio, Maryland, Conn, Georgia, and Virginia), an additional map of Massachusetts is the same vintage, but folded into pocket map covers, we acquired it separately. All seven maps have the same water mark, the same outline color by county, and all were clearly issued as separates, only Pennsylvania and Virginia have the DeSilver imprint, and only these two and Georgia have substantial updates from the earlier Carey imprints. Perhaps in 1827 he decided to reissue his 1822 Carey maps as Pocket Maps and separate maps. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians: London and Philadelphia. |

A map drawn by Amanda Chapin when she was 19 and lived in Smetport, Pennsylvania. The date of 1832 is not on the map, but is on a piece of paper attached to the frame the map was in. Comparing the map to atlas maps of the period around 1830, the date seems appropriate. It is uncommon to find school maps like these of Africa - most were made of the U.S. From the collection of Albert W. Johnson, former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, 23rd District, Pennsylvania. Map in outline color. |

With an engraved title page. This is the Bradford 1838 Illustrated Atlas, without the text and with the addition of ten maps: two hemispheres, South America, Atlantic Ocean, Europe (3), Africa, Asia, and Pacific Ocean. Why Bradford's name is dropped is a mystery, although Goodrich in 1842 issued a new edition of the Illustrated Atlas with Bradford that retains the text and adds the same new maps that are added here. However, many of the maps in this 1841 edition are somewhat different from the 1838 and 1842 editions, with the usual changes in counties, etc. With full hand painted color, atlas is bound in half leather black cloth covered boards with "A General Atlas Of The World With A Separate Map Of Each Of The United States" stamped in gilt on the front red leather label. |
