19 color maps on sheet 49 x 67. Showing major forts and ports of North America and the Caribbean area. Covens and Mortier published a seven sheet version of Henry Popple's "Map of The British Empire in America" in approximately 1737 (dated by Cumming and Wallis). It appeared in their Atlas Nouveau editions after about 1741. This is sheet six, with the Forts and Harbors. It has sixteen harbor maps, one more than Popple's fifteen harbor maps, adding the island of Curacao. Maps have outline color. The other sheets were the Key Map (almost an exact copy of Popple), fours sheets that reproduce Popple's map at half the size, and a single sheet of four views - Mexico City, New York, Quebec, and Niagara Falls. The Harbor Sheet and the Views sheets are the scarcest. |

5th ed."Hydrographer to His Majesty." Dated 1810. Four separate sheets dissected into 16 sheets each, with light blue silk edging and linen backing. Streeter is incorrect in calling this the first edition, it is actually the last. The Adams - Onis Treaty line of 1819 is clearly marked, Arrowsmith styled himself "Hydrographer to His Majesty" in 1820 (Tooley), this edition has a road from Queretaro to Panco Valles which does not appear in W.H.'s additions to 1815 edition, as well as other roads and new towns around Mexico City and two small groups of islands off the California Coast that do not appear on the 1810 edition, this edition appears in the Atlas to Thompson's Alcedo, c.1825 copy, in the Bancroft. The mystery is why Arrowsmith did not add "additions to 1820" on the title, and in fact erased the "additions to 1817" that must have appeared on the plate from the most recent changes made before the 1820 changes, thereby leaving only 1810 on the title. With outline color. The sheets fold with marbled end sheets into a new tan cloth folding case 26x18 with "Mexico A. Arrowsmith 1820" stamped on the spine in gold. |

| Note |
1st ed. was 1833, later editions by Reed & Barber. An unusual map in two sheets, showing the continent coast to coast. Tanner's influence from his North America map is evident in the west, and Long's map has influenced the plains, but Tanner's U.S. map is the primary source, in the Oregon District, the Plains, and the area east of the Mississippi. The Great Basin is filled with a table of distances and heights of mountains (which convention appears in several maps published in Hartford about this time by Thrall, Huntington, Olney's Geography, etc.). Wheat mentions the 1849 and 1850 editions of this map published by Reed and Barber, but this much earlier and different edition was unknown to him. Not in Phillips. Views of the Capital and the White House. Phelps did a related and somewhat smaller map in 1833 - see our copy. After the 1835 edition, no editions until the 1848 by Reed and Barber (see our 1849, 1850 and 1854 editions). Map is in full color. |

A separate copy of the map published in Forbes' History of Upper and Lower California. It is a lithograph, taken from the engraved edition of the map that appears in the first edition of Forbes' book. At first we thought this must be from one of the two reprints done in 1919 and 1939, but it is not. Possibly Smith Elder put out a later edition with this lithographed map but left the date the same on the title page. However, we still think it is more modern than that - we will keep looking for the source. Inset maps are titled: Sketch of Port Bodega. Harbour of San Francisco. Sketch of Puerto de S. Diego. Sketch of Monterrey Harbour. Sketch of St. Barbara Harbour. Sketch of Port S. Gabriel, or S. Pedro. Map has outline color by country. Prime meridian is Greenwich. |

Full color map with no publisher name, and date, Wheat says Haven, 1846. This copy was published late in 1846, see our early 1846 copy for a different issue. Streeter 3871 attributes this to Ensign and Thayer due to its similarity to their 1848 Ornamental Map of the U.S. and Mexico (Streeter 3872). Wheat says that this map is the source of Haven's broadside map of 1846 (Wheat 26) and the Journal of Commerce map of 1848 (Wheat 47), which use the top 2/3 and bottom 2/3 respectively, of this map, and therefore Wheat attributes this to Haven. The 1846 date is the latest date in the statistics on the states that flank the map. Wheat mentions that he found a copy in Farnham's Life and Travels in California, and our copy has written on the back in ms "Life and Travels in California," so this may be another place it was used, or what it was originally made for (see our copy of the Farnham with the map). See High Ridge 15 for two issues of the Haven 1846 broadside (Streeter 3865, 3866). includes "panoramic view of Oregon and California, and state seals. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. |

Includes "panoramic view of Oregon and California, and state seals. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. |

2nd edition, later than Wheat. Wheat's copy of the 1847 edition is essentially the same as the 1846 edition, this copy is later in the year because it adds many towns in Mexico (probably to reflect battles, etc.) and it adds two tables, of population and distances in Mexico, which are placed in the ocean below North America. Full and outline color map. Includes chronological and statistical view of the United States. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. |

2866A |
| Note |
Rare reissue of 1842 Greenleaf Universal Atlas. Many changes from the 1842 edition: Florida a State, Michigan entirely redrawn, Mexican War results on North American map, Mexico, Texas, Oregon changes to show 1846 boundary with Canada, Missionary stations listed on the Hemispheres, and many new railroads, counties, boundaries, etc. There are more changes between this edition and the 1842, than between the 1842 and Burr's 1836. Not in Karpinski, which is strange because Michigan is totally redrawn, not in Phillips or any other reference. There is also an 1849 edition (property of C.W.) that has similar maps except the Mexico map does not reflect the Mexican War boundary - probably he was running out of maps and this was at the bottom of the stack! Has the same Geography text in the rear, unchanged. The Wisconsin and Iowa map in this copy differs from an 1848 in Fitch Catalogue 48, #314, in having Mandan Dist. instead of Missouri Territory in the Fitch, making this copy probably later (the 1842 has Missouri Territory). Burr's name is no longer on the map of Illinois. Maps are in full color. Bound in half leather, floral patterned blue cloth covered boards with "The Universal Atlas" stamped in gold. Spine reads "Atlas". Marbled lining. |
