A SS. EE. Li Signori Rifoormatori Dello Studio Di Padova. In Venezia, Dalle Stampe Di Antonio Zatta Con Licenza De Superiori, E Privilegio. M. DCC. LXXVIII.
List No 5007A
Note In addition to a two volume Italian translation of Raynal's History of North America, this book contains the first edition of Zatta's twelve sheet version of Mitchell's Map of North America, plus three other maps: Il Canada, Le Isole di Terra Nuova e Capo Breton, and La Baja D' Hudson. All of these maps appeared also in Zatta's Atlante Novissimo published from 1779-1785. A second edition of the Zatta/Mitchell maps was published in 1791 (see P651). Zatta's version of Mitchell is not an exact or complete copy: the Zatta maps do not cover the far western portions of Mitchell's map, many geographical changes are introduced, and Bermuda is depicted as well as Jamaica., neither of which are shown by Mitchell. A separate map covers Newfoundland and Cape Breton, on the same scale. Maps are hand painted with outline color. Covers are quarter leather light brown marbled paper covered boards with "Raynal. Storia Dell' America Settentrionale. 1778" stamped in gilt on the new leather spine.

Full Title Plan of the action at Huberton under Brigadier Genl. Frazier, supported by Major Genl. Reidesel, on the 7th. July 1777. Drawn by P. Gerlach, Deputy Quarter Master General. Engraved by Wm. Faden. London, published as the Act directs Feby. 1st 1780, by W. Faden Charing Cross.
List No 4402.000
Note A plan of a battle at Hubbardton, Vermont, the only important battle fought in Vermont during the Revolution. Nebenzahl: "This is a typical Faden battle plan. It presents clearly in color the positions and movements of the opposing units upon a topographical map, which enables the viewer to see where terrain features affected the action." The plan is normally seen on thin paper, folded, as one of six maps included in John Burgoyne's "A State of the Expedition from Canada..." London, 1780. This copy is on heavy paper, unfolded, and may have been in Faden's Atlas of Battles of the American Revolution, published in London in 1793 and again, with remaindered maps, by Bartlett & Welford in New York, circa 1845 (see P1337, #25). Relief shown by hachures. Hand col. Scale 200 paces to an in.

Full Title A Map of the Province of Upper Canada, describing all the new settlements, townships, &c. with the countries adjacent, from Quebec to Lake Huron. (1st ed.) Compiled, at the request of His Excellency Major General John G. Simcoe, First Lieutenant Governor, by David William Smyth Esqr., Surveyor General. London, published by W. Faden, Geographer to His Majesty and to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, Charing Cross, April 12th 1800. Accompanied with a topographical Description. Price 10s. & 6d.
List No 2496.000
Note Smyth was the first Surveyor General of Canada and in 1799 wrote "A Short Topographical Description of His Majesty's Province of Upper Canada, In North America" which was sold with the map. This map is the first edition of the "Smyth Series" which went through 13 separate editions to 1858 (see Farrell, Explorations in the History of Canadian Mapping, pp152-154). Smyth's name was dropped from all editions after 1835. Faden published the map until 1818, Wyld published it after 1831. Longest publishing history of any map of the region (Farrell). See our 1818 and the Wyld 1838 for later versions. See Sabin 85205 for more on Smyth and the map. Map has outline color by hand, is dissected into 16 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into a new gray cloth folding case 23.5x16 with "Upper Canada D.W. Smyth 1800" stamped in gold on the spine. Relief shown by hachures.

Full Title A Map Of The Frontier Of British North America, And The United States, Describing The Boundary Line as fixed by the Treaty of 1783, which has never been respected by the American Government. Likewise the New Line of Demarcation as now proposed to be established between those States, and the British Provinces intended to secure the Independence of the Indians.
List No 3149.000
Note Removed from a British publication on boundary disputes with the U.S. At the top of the map is "No. 2." The map proposes that either the U.S. give up to Britain major parts of the Northeastern states, or Britain would take instead the entire North West Territories. This shows some of the disputes that lead to the War of 1812. The date is estimated. Map is without color. Shows boundaries, and some color outline administrative divisions. Includes explanatory remarks. Relief shown by hachures.

Note This is the only War of 1812 map in the Streeter sale. It covers the area of conflict along the U.S. and Canadian border, showing forts on the U.S. side and a great deal of detail on Canadian townships with a separate listing of towns in the various districts. The Karpinski copy adds Doolittle as engraver. The following year Kensett with Shelton put out a more general map of the U.S. showing vignettes of sea battles. Outline color. Not in Phillips. Scarce.

List No 2956.000
Note Scarce War of 1812 map. Seven vignettes show important sea battles of the War of 1812. Information on the Post roads, other routes, population of states and territories is given in the borders. A curious note regarding fishing and grapes appears in northern Illinois - seems to be unique to this map. A later reissue of this map was put out in 1825 by Lewis Robinson (see Ristow 271). The map is not very up to date regarding political changes - it does not show Missouri Territory or Louisiana (both 1812). The copyright appears at the top of the map - July 6, 1813. It is engraved by A. Doolittle of New Haven and Kensett of Cheshire. Karpinski 13 is an 1812 Map of the United States and Canada by Kensett and Doolittle, based on surveys by Tardieu, and somewhat smaller in size. Outline color by state. Borders contain tables of distance on the Great Post Road from Pasamaquoddy (ME) to St. Mary's (GA), on the Post Road from Albany (NY) to Montreal, also population and products of states. Relief shown pictorially and by hachures.

Authors Barber, B.B., Willard, A.
Full Title Map Of The United States Of America With Its Territories & Districts. Including also a part of Upper & Lower Canada And Mexico. Published By B.B. Barber & A. Willard, Hartford, 1835.
List No 2240.000
Note 1st ed. was 1833, later editions by Reed & Barber. An unusual map in two sheets, showing the continent coast to coast. Tanner's influence from his North America map is evident in the west, and Long's map has influenced the plains, but Tanner's U.S. map is the primary source, in the Oregon District, the Plains, and the area east of the Mississippi. The Great Basin is filled with a table of distances and heights of mountains (which convention appears in several maps published in Hartford about this time by Thrall, Huntington, Olney's Geography, etc.). Wheat mentions the 1849 and 1850 editions of this map published by Reed and Barber, but this much earlier and different edition was unknown to him. Not in Phillips. Views of the Capital and the White House. Phelps did a related and somewhat smaller map in 1833 - see our copy. After the 1835 edition, no editions until the 1848 by Reed and Barber (see our 1849, 1850 and 1854 editions). Map is in full color.

List No 5066.000
Note This map was issued after the 1837 rebellion against British rule. It shows transportation systems, militia locations, "Irish Settlements," towns, and "Disaffected Villages burnt by the Queen's troops" (including St. Denis and St. Charles). Water is handpainted in blue, otherwise map is without color. The map was lithographed by Day & Haghe, "Lithors to The Queen, Gate St." and as such is an early example of map lithography in the English map trade. Ristow points out that maps in Parliamentary papers were lithographed due to the need for quick reproductions, and the urgency of the 1837 Rebellion probably is the reason this map was lithographed. It is the only map published by Wyld that we have seen that was lithographed. This map did not have a wide circulation and is scarce. Relief shon by hachure.
