| Note |
A map drawn by Amanda Chapin when she was 19 and lived in Smetport, Pennsylvania. The date of 1832 is not on the map, but is on a piece of paper attached to the frame the map was in. Comparing the map to atlas maps of the period around 1830, the date seems appropriate. It is uncommon to find school maps like these of Africa - most were made of the U.S. From the collection of Albert W. Johnson, former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, 23rd District, Pennsylvania. Map in outline color. |

This is the first separate map of the Hawaiian Islands published in Hawaii. It was engraved and drawn by Kalama, one of the best student engravers at the Lahainaluna Mission School on Maui, who made the larger 1838 Map of the Hawaiian Islands, of which only two copies are known. This 1837 map probably served as a prototype for the 1838 map. It was the most detailed map yet published, showing many place names on the islands unfamiliar to Cook and Vancouver and not appearing on their maps, exceeded in detail only by the enlarged 1838 edition which added more place names. The first map produced by the press at Lahainaluna, under the guidance of Missionary Lorrin Andrews, was a world map in 1834, followed by five school atlas maps in 1836. In 1840 a small school atlas was completed, followed by a larger school atlas in 1840 and again in1842, primarily copied from Olney's School Atlas (see our #2430 for the 1837 Olney and P3259 and P4087 for "He Mau Palapala Aina A Me Na Niele E Pili Ana," the Hawaiian school atlases). This 1837 map is larger than the atlas maps and was issued as a separate. It is known in only three collections (and was unknown to Fitzpatrick) and is rare. Kalama went on to become one of the best surveyors in the islands. Outline color. |

This map expands the coverage of the large Pacific States Map to include New Mexico, Colorado, most of Dakota and all of Montana. However, because of its relatively small size, there is much less detail shown. This same map appears in two parts in Clarke's New School Geography (see our copy) also published by Bancroft in 1866. In fact, we believe that the map was made primarily for the school geography (hence the simplification) and secondarily as a separate map. Wheat trashes the map: "we are surprised that Knight should have a hand in so inferior a job...No getting away from it, we must point the finger of shame at Knight for this map." The simplification is understandable for a school map, but showing the Green River entering the Colorado in Arizona is inexcusable at this date (especially for a school atlas!). Curiously, the companion Outline Map of the Pacific States in four sheets which accompanied the Clarke School Geography does show the Green and Colorado correctly. Notwithstanding its faults, the map is quite attractive, and, for some reason, scarce. With an excellent catalog of Bancroft's maps on the inside cover. Full color by county, and folded into stamped light brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Bancroft's Map Of The Rocky Mountain States, And The Pacific Coast." in gold. Relief shown by hachures. |
