1st edition, 1st wall map issued by Mitchell. This edition does not have the counties delineated and numbered. Ristow mistakenly says all editions have the townships (he means counties) numbered, but this one, the first, does not, thereby eliminating the index of counties and thus showing more of the western territory. This map predates the Traveler's Guide by 1 year, and thus is Mitchell's first "original" production, as opposed to the Finley material he reissued as the American Atlas and Pocket Maps. The case for the map has a leather label saying "Traveler's Map of the United States." Copyright date is October 10, 1831. There is no other date on the map. Ristow thinks the map was issued in early 1832, but it is not in Phillips until 1834 edition (which probably has the counties indicated by number and the 1831 copyright), so Ristow may not have seen this edition, but rather the 1834. The map is hand painted in bright full color by state (insets by county), dissected in 24 sections with green paper end sheets, mounted on linen and edged in pink silk. The covers 24x20 are half red leather marbled paper covered boards with ties and a leather label embossed with "Traveller's Map Of The United States" in gilt. |

The first edition. In wall map form. It is difficult to find any changes between this and the 1835 edition, although there probably are some. Ristow states that there was an issue of this map in 1834 without the word "Mitchell" in the title (see our copy #4843), and he does not mention this word appearing in the title until the 1835 issue. He also notes an 1834 issue of essentially the same map but with the title changed to "A New Map of the United States" (Karrow 1-1484 and our #4396). Insets show the United States, south part of Florida, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, north part of Maine, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Albany, Baltimore and Washington, Cincinnati, Charleston and New Orleans. With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by state. |

This map is not listed in any collections, it an early and important map of Arkansas, first published the year (1836) that Arkansas became a state. James Callan compiled the map but little else is known about him. The map shows Land Districts and offices, Military Bounty Lands and Military Townships "unfit for cultivation," Steam Boat Routes, and much other political and physical detail. In the southwest corner of the state the boundary line is west of the final boundary and a line even further west is listed as "Proposed Boundary of Arkansas." From the title it appears that Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. had, by 1839, taken over the selling of Mitchell's pocket maps and guides (see our other copies for 1839). At this time Mitchell was issuing his first edition of the School Geography and Atlas. The Universal Atlas was still six years away, however he may have decided to focus on school books, large maps, and important pocket maps and leave the standards to TC & Co. Map is folded into dark blue stamped leather covers 12.5x7.5 with "Mitchell's Map Of Indiana" in gilt. Full color. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and Greenwich. |
