Note	This is the second, unrecorded edition. The first complete edition was 1816, and the third edition, 1819. Ristow notes an incomplete issue (only the title sheet) of 1815. The 1818 and 1819 editions add an inset map of east Florida. This 1818 edition has a printed notation on the U.S. Mexican boundary: "Boundary between the U. States and the Spanish Provinces agreeable to the Treaty of 1819." This indicates that the map was published late in 1818 or early in 1819, either in anticipation of the February, 1819 signing of the treaty, or just after it. This is a huge map, almost six feet square, full of detail on roads, large and small towns, and areas that were "settling up." Like other large U.S. maps (other than the Melish) of the period (Shelton & Kensett, Varle, Bradley, Arrowsmith, Tardieu), this map extends west to just beyond the Mississippi River. It ranks as the largest in size and scale and is certainly the most detailed. And it is rare, with this 1818 copy being perhaps unique. It must have drawn much of its road information from the Bradley postal map of 1804/12. It is similar to the Arrowsmith 1819 in the northwestern areas, but closer to the Tardieu 1818 in the Michigan Peninsula area. It is not clear to us whether Lewis borrowed from Arrowsmith and Tardieu or vice versa, probably it worked both ways. For an enthusiastic contemporary evaluation of the first edition, see our 1815 copy of the advertisement for this map ("It is, we believe, much the largest specimen of geographical design ever produced in the United States...we do not think it equaled by any large map of European workmanship we have ever examined"). Lewis also made a smaller wall map of the U.S. titled "Traveler's Guide: A New and Correct Map of the United States..." in 1819, and another smaller still in 1817 titled "A Correct Map of the United States with the West Indies..." (see our copies).

Note	This large four sheet wall map of the United States west to the 100th meridian must have been intended to accompany Burr's 1839 thirteen sheet American Atlas of postal wall maps (see our 0104.000), although there is little record of its publishing other than a listing in Phillips Maps of America, p.896. The American Atlas has a large map of the United States from coast to coast, but it lacks the detail of this wall map, which shows all most all of the postal roads, canals, and railroads that are delineated on the large scale individual state maps of the American Atlas. That detail makes this wall map one of the best large area road maps of the United States as a whole, of the period - more detailed than Tanner's Map of the United States or Mitchell's Reference and Distance Map of the United States. Burr likely published it as an addendum to the American Atlas to give a larger overview of the road system of the entire United States. Ristow (p.106) mentions that Burr published an edition of the American Atlas in 1842, so it is likely that this map was added to the set then. We are presuming that John Arrowsmith was the publisher and printer because of the similarity of style between this wall map and the American Atlas which he published for Burr, but his name does not appear on the map. There is no key or legend, only a scale of miles, and only two classes of roads are shown, primary and secondary, compared to four classes of roads shown on the American Atlas state maps. In the lower right corner is an untitled inset map of North and South America that is a slighly simplified version of part of John Arrowsmith's Map of the World on Mercators Projection, 1844 (see our 4613.002), further evidence of the John Arrowsmith involvement in publishing this wall map.

Buffalo are present in "inumerable bands," and it is suggested that the dung be used for fuel. Timber is scarce , except on the islands. No game was found 30 miles each way from Fort Laramie. Grass was scanty as was fuel. It is stated that, "Sioux Indians are not to be trusted." Notes from Fremont's report states that Fort Laramie should be used as an established military post. It would make the whole area safer and could also continue to be a trading post.

Note	This section of the map includes the Wind River Mountains and a discussion of the continental divide by Fremont. In his report Fremont states, "We mounted the barometer in the snow of the summit ... giving 13, 570 feet for the elevation above the Gulf of Mexico. Fields of snow lay far below us: boundless mountains stretched before us. A stillness the most profound, and a terrible solitude, forced themselves constantly on the mind as the great features of this place." This section traverses the war ground of the Indians, and so it is noted that guards and watches should be in place.

Note	This map contains the largest amount of written data. Copious notes are included from October 10th through October 25th. The last note tells about the first sighting of the Columbia River. Fremont notes that the distance from the mouth of the Kansas to "this place" is about 2,000 miles. They were greeted at Fort Wallah-Wallah by Mr. McKinley, the commander of the post, who received them "with great civility."

Note	The first Disturnell edition, and the second Martin edition (after the 1828 White Gallaher and White first edition). Wheat calls this edition a "famous" map. This edition is distinguished by the absence of a trail line running directly from San Antonio to Austin, Texas, that appears on the third Martin edition. Compared to our seventh edition (see our # 2541), there are substantially fewer towns, roads, and physical features both in Mexico and the U.S. The two profiles in the Pacific and two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico of the 1847 edition are not present. The covers and paste down statistics are the same as our 1847 edition. The map was printed from the same plate as the 1828 White Gallaher and White edition, evidenced by the faint copyright notice in the lower right corner under the neat line, Disturnell made many updates to the 1828 edition, and its republication by him was occasioned by the outbreak of the Mexican War. White Gallaher and White copied and slightly enlarged Henry Tanner's 1826 Map of the United States of Mexico (see our #5176). Martin lists twenty three editions of Disturnell's map. A significant difference between the Disturnell map and the earlier editions by White Gallaher and White, and Tanner, is the moving of the boundary line between Alta and Baja California about 70 miles further north toward San Diego, which was then used as the boundary in the treaty to end the Mexican War. Note	Removed from the United States Register by John Disturnell for 1854 (Wheat 801 refers to this as the "Congressional Directory, 1st Session, 33rd Congress"). Wheat missed the fact that this map is taken from the same base map as Colton's 1849 "Map of the United States, The British Provinces...Showing The routes of The U.S. Mail Steam Packets to California..." It has the same inset view of Pyramid Lake, but the inset map of the Gold Regions is omitted as well as the inset of South America. A table is added in the upper right of "Geographical Statistics." And this later map extends northward about 8 inches further than the 1849 map, to include all of Alaska and Canada. Several railroad routes to the west coast are shown, and there is a mysterious circle about six inches in diameter (about 1400 miles in scale) around Chicago, with no explanation given for it. Nebraska is shown in reduced size, but no Kansas. There are many updates to the map in the West, compared to the 1849. Disturnell published the U.S. Directories during the 1840's, 50's, 60's, and 70's, and most of them had one or another of Colton's North America maps. Note	The contents calls for only one map but a second new map is added of the entire U.S., from the Mitchell Universal Atlas plate. The Drake1856 map adds J.L. Hazzard to the title and compared to the 1855 issue shows several new proposed railroads, particularly in the area west of the Missouri River (possibly the proposed Pacific Railroad routes). The Mitchell/Young U.S. map is slightly different from the same map in the 1856 Universal Atlas, in its showing of the Pacific Railroad routes. Note	General map of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and southern Pennsylvania showing cities and towns, roads, rivers, and relief by hachures. The map is overprinted in red to indicate railroads, the state name "West Virginia," and concentric circles centered on Richmond. Circles are at intervals of ten miles. A table of "Distances by Rail Roads" appears below the map title. Printed in colors, this map is probably the first U.S. Government map to show the new State of West Virginia. It is the first issue, published in July, 1863, just after West Virginia became a state on July 1, 1863. A second issue appeared in August, 1863. It was issued in substantially the same form in 1862 (Stephenson 465.45). Two other issues appeared in 1862 taken from this map: Map of Eastern Virginia and Map of Western Virginia. These were all popular maps, and Stephenson quotes the 1862 Coast Survey Annual Report as stating that 5,500 copies of the Map of Eastern Virginia alone were printed. Map is folded into textured brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Map of Virginia. W.S. & A. Martien, Philadelphia" in gilt.
