Note 2nd (and best) edition, first with Tanner's Map of the Canals and Railroads of the United States. The map is copyright 1830. The book lists over 150 canals and navigation improvements in great detail. The map shows the most important canals and two railroads in operation, and one proposed railroad (the Great Western Railroad, from New York to the Mississippi River)plus two others. The canals and railroad lines are in color. The first edition appeared in 1826 with 10 maps but without the Tanner map (see our copy #4214). Tanner in 1834 and 1840 (see our copies, #2655 and #979) published a book on Canals and Railroads that uses the same map, updated. Modelski lists the 1834 Tanner map as "one of the earliest general maps of the eastern United States showing railroads in operation." Since this 1830 copy is an earlier state of the same map, it probably qualifies as the true "first." Two folding plates of profiles of canals and railroads at the back. Not in Streeter, Eberstadt, or Graff. Bound in half leather boards with "A Connected View" on the spine.

Authors Colton, J.H., Disturnell, John
Full Title Map Of North America From The Latest Authorities Showing the Proposed Railroad Routes from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. J.H. Colton & Co. New York, 1854, for J. Disturnell. Entered ... 1849, by J.H. Colton ... New York.
List No 3507.000
Note Removed from the United States Register by John Disturnell for 1854 (Wheat 801 refers to this as the "Congressional Directory, 1st Session, 33rd Congress"). Wheat missed the fact that this map is taken from the same base map as Colton's 1849 "Map of the United States, The British Provinces...Showing The routes of The U.S. Mail Steam Packets to California..." It has the same inset view of Pyramid Lake, but the inset map of the Gold Regions is omitted as well as the inset of South America. A table is added in the upper right of "Geographical Statistics." And this later map extends northward about 8 inches further than the 1849 map, to include all of Alaska and Canada. Several railroad routes to the west coast are shown, and there is a mysterious circle about six inches in diameter (about 1400 miles in scale) around Chicago, with no explanation given for it. Nebraska is shown in reduced size, but no Kansas. There are many updates to the map in the West, compared to the 1849. Disturnell published the U.S. Directories during the 1840's, 50's, 60's, and 70's, and most of them had one or another of Colton's North America maps. See also our somewhat different 1852 issue (#4715). Full and outline color. Shows railroads, trails, roads, town and cities, Indian tribal areas, and drainage. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C.

Note 1st edition, 1st year of operation for Cram's business. Everything about this map is different from Cram's later productions: it is his first year of operation, at 134 Lake Street, and the style of the cover, the map and the cartouche all have an "early" and unsophisticated look. Charles Shober is listed as Lithographer. Cram also produced the Guide Map to Chicago in 1868 (see our copy). Surviving pre fire maps by Cram are rare. Karrow shows 1869 maps for Missouri, Missouri and Kansas together, and Illinois, (all engraved by Pfeiffer, not Shober), but he shows no 1868 maps other than this Iowa and the Chicago maps. So this may be Cram's first state pocket map. It is copyright 1868. There is a view of a steam engine in the cartouche, this does not appear in later Cram maps. A 10 page index lists principal towns and counties, and gives a brief history of the state. Full color. Map is folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 14x9 with "New Township Map Of Iowa" in gilt.

List No 3725.000
Note Removed from Palmer's 1869 "Report of Surveys...for a route extending the Kansas Pacific Railway to the Pacific Ocean." Palmer used an exact copy Keeler's 1868 reduced scale edition of his National Map of the United States without credit in this first issue although Palmer's map adds much material along the line of the proposed southern continental route, especially in the Grand Canyon, in fact, this map is best known as the first map to use the name "Grand Canyon" of the Colorado. The Kansas Pacific had dreams of extending their line to California, as shown on this map, but it never happened. The map shows the routes of the Northern Pacific, the Union and Central Pacific, and the Southern Route. Ms color red and blue lines have been drawn on the various routes, adding an additional route from Centreville, Nevada, to Portland, Oregon (probably following Dodge's proposals - see his report). The main Kansas Pacific line has at least sixteen proposed branches! There is a later issue of this map that credits Keeler as a source (see our copy).
