Note Large uncolored map of the world published separately to accompany the "Memorial of James B. Moore and Company, asking the aid of the Government in the establishment of a regular Line of Mail Steamers from California to China and the East Indies" published in 1849, listed by Sabin without a map. The map shows over thirty routes by steamer from Europe and the United States to the far east, emphasizing the advantage of routes to Asia from the west coast of the U.S. connected to the east coast and Europe via the (yet to come) transcontinental railroad. There is a large attractive vignette of a steamer, two tables listing distances from various ports, and an excellent inset map of the "Harbour of San Francisco California." This map is similar to, but more detailed than, the Burr/Haven map of "The World on Mercator's Projection..." of 1850. Not found in any references (other than the Sabin listing of the Memorial without map) and presumably rare. Prime meridian is Greenwich.

Note This is the first year that Colton published this map. Iowa is now fully developed with counties, and there is major railroad growth in Indiana and Illinois, among other changes from the 1850 edition. This is probably the late 1852 issue - Karrow 1-1578 is the same map without Colton's name in the title, indicating that Colton took over publishing the map later in the year. Full color by county. Map is dissected into 36 sections, mounted on linen. Folds into marbled end sheets and a new black cloth folding case 36x30 with "Colton's Map Of The United States J. Calvin Smith 1852" stamped in gold on the spine.

Note Removed from the United States Register by John Disturnell for 1854 (Wheat 801 refers to this as the "Congressional Directory, 1st Session, 33rd Congress"). Wheat missed the fact that this map is taken from the same base map as Colton's 1849 "Map of the United States, The British Provinces...Showing The routes of The U.S. Mail Steam Packets to California..." It has the same inset view of Pyramid Lake, but the inset map of the Gold Regions is omitted as well as the inset of South America. A table is added in the upper right of "Geographical Statistics." And this later map extends northward about 8 inches further than the 1849 map, to include all of Alaska and Canada. Several railroad routes to the west coast are shown, and there is a mysterious circle about six inches in diameter (about 1400 miles in scale) around Chicago, with no explanation given for it. Nebraska is shown in reduced size, but no Kansas. There are many updates to the map in the West, compared to the 1849. Disturnell published the U.S. Directories during the 1840's, 50's, 60's, and 70's, and most of them had one or another of Colton's North America maps. See also our somewhat different 1852 issue (#4715). Full and outline color. Shows railroads, trails, roads, town and cities, Indian tribal areas, and drainage. Relief shown by hachures. Note Very early issue of Warren's Pacific Railroad general map of the U.S. When the Pacific Railway Survey reports were published in 1855, the large Warren map of the U.S. was not completed and a smaller map was issued with a note by Warren that the larger map would soon be ready for publication. This issue of the map is dated 1855 only, unlike the final issue which was dated 1854-5-6-7 (see our #0693). Also, the list of authorities here is shorter than the later issue and has no dates later than 1855. Most importantly, this issue has major areas blank that are filled in the final issue. Various routes are drawn in ms on the map, in red and blue lines, all proceeding from points in the Midwest to the west coast, as well as some north - south routes. Also, a red line is drawn from east to west next to the 38th parallel. We think these are the trails used by travelers, perhaps a few years later, but we can't be sure. There is another early issue of this map that is between this 1855 issue and the version published with the final reports - it is dated 1857, has fewer "blank" areas that this and has more and later dated authorities (see WH copy).

Note This large and decorative map by Monk reflects the interest in Central America in the mid 50's (see Palmer, Wyld, Disturnell, and others) but adds the U.S. coast line from Florida to Texas, which is missing in most of the other maps of Central America. With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). Full color map, folded into stamped brown cloth covers 16x11 titled "Monk's New Map Of Central America, Cuba, Florida &c." Relief shown by hachures.

Note Entered in 1856 and first issued in 1857. With an inset map of the World, and views of the U.S. Capital and state symbols around an eagle, tables of Distances and Statistics from the Census of 1850. Compared to the 1859 edition (our 4012.000) Colona, Jefferson, and Shoshone are added as proposed states in the west, one of the only maps we have seen to show all three. Also, the imprint of Johnson and Browning, Richmond Virginia is very unusual and probably one of the last north south publishing collaborations on the eve of the Civil War. Note This Quarto issue of the report is the House issue, except for volume XI which is the Senate issue. W. Heckrotte has an unusual copy of the Warren U.S. map found in this report. It is dissected on linen and is an earlier version of the map published with the Quarto report. It has 40 authorities vs. 42 in the quarto issue map, shorter note to left of authorities, lots of plate differences, especially: nothing in Owyhee area, differences in N.M., Calif., etc. Looks like someone asked for the map before it was finished -see the Lack of ocean lines in the top half south of Gray's Harbor. In 13 volumes. Bound in full leather with "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad to the Pacific Ocean" and the volume number on the spine in gold.

Note The general map published with the Pacific Railroad Survey Reports. This map had earlier issues and later issues. A preliminary listed of those would be: 1855 (our #2289), 1857 (WH and AH's copies)- blank areas in eastern Oregon, fewer authorities, 1857 published with the reports, 1858 early (see Schubert);1858 late (our #2750), 1867 (our #2594). We suspect there are other states and issues, particularly in the period of 1859 to 1866. This is one of the most important maps of the West in the 1850's and 1860's and a study of its different states shows the rapid growth of topographical information from government exploration and mapping.
