First edition of Tanner's guide. In pocket map form, with the map and no text, as issued. Ristow says the first edition was 1834, and while that was the first issue of the enlarged guide with text, this 1825 map is from the same plate as the 1834 map and thus should be seen as the first edition of the guide. The entire lower right corner of the map is taken up with lists of "Steam Boat Routes Throughout the United States," which are keyed to letters in the map margins. In the 1834 and later editions, these lists are replaced with inset maps of U.S. cities, and the lists are given, along with added stage and railroad routes, in the body of the text. Outline color by state. In red leather covers, 13x8, gilt stamped "Traveller's Guide Through The U. States." |

One of the first county wall maps of a New England state. Nothing is known about William Lester and this and the Norwich map may be the only maps he made. There are eight inset maps of towns in the counties and a large inset "Geological Map of Windham & New London Counties From the surveys of Lt. W.W. Mather, U.S.M.A. 1832." A small red paste on label says "Colored And Put Up by C.S. Williams, N. Haven, Conn." One of the insets shows the projected Boston, Norwich & New London Rail Road - the earliest charting of a Connecticut railroad (Thompson). The map is exceedingly well done, with the drawing and the engraving of the highest quality for the period. It is rare - the only reference found was in Thompson's listing. |

Very rare map with no reference to it found in any of the normal bibliographies. The date is estimated. Proposed railway lines are shown to and from San Francisco to New Orleans and Napolian (sic). The map has been distorted severely with San Francisco much too far east. Napoleon, Arkansas, now defunct (why?), according to Baldwin and Thomas' Gazetteer of 1854, was the capital of Desha County. It was situated on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Arkansas. The population was about 1,000 people, and steamboats ran three times a week to Little Rock. Why it was placed so prominently on the map is unknown. Perhaps it was vying to be a terminus for the railroad. Texas is shown at a highly detailed level. The map is in color and folds into brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Map of Mexico Showing The Seat Of War" on the front cover in gilt. |

This map was probably published by Burr c1842 (Wilkes' track prominently displayed, Oregon boundary not settled in original map) and then used by Haven, with added insets of the RR route, and by cutting the map down the middle of Asia to put North America in the center (see dateline joint). California is colored yellow (no mention of gold other than this hint) and the Gila River boundary is drawn in red (on his copy Wheat says that California is shown as part of Mexico). See the James B. Moore map of 1850 for a similar promotion of the U.S. as the new "center" of the Europe/Asia trade, using the proposed transcontinental railroad as the link. In outline color. Large uncolored map of the world published separately to accompany the "Memorial of James B. Moore and Company, asking the aid of the Government in the establishment of a regular Line of Mail Steamers from California to China and the East Indies" published in 1849, listed by Sabin without a map. The map shows over thirty routes by steamer from Europe and the United States to the far east, emphasizing the advantage of routes to Asia from the west coast of the U.S. connected to the east coast and Europe via the (yet to come) transcontinental railroad. There is a large attractive vignette of a steamer, two tables listing distances from various ports, and an excellent inset map of the "Harbour of San Francisco California." This map is similar to, but more detailed than, the Burr/Haven map of "The World on Mercator's Projection..." of 1850. Not found in any references (other than the Sabin listing of the Memorial without map) and presumably rare. Prime meridian is Greenwich. |

Very early issue of Warren's Pacific Railroad general map of the U.S. When the Pacific Railway Survey reports were published in 1855, the large Warren map of the U.S. was not completed and a smaller map was issued with a note by Warren that the larger map would soon be ready for publication. This issue of the map is dated 1855 only, unlike the final issue which was dated 1854-5-6-7 (see our #0693). Also, the list of authorities here is shorter than the later issue and has no dates later than 1855. Most importantly, this issue has major areas blank that are filled in the final issue. Various routes are drawn in ms on the map, in red and blue lines, all proceeding from points in the Midwest to the west coast, as well as some north - south routes. Also, a red line is drawn from east to west next to the 38th parallel. We think these are the trails used by travelers, perhaps a few years later, but we can't be sure. There is another early issue of this map that is between this 1855 issue and the version published with the final reports - it is dated 1857, has fewer "blank" areas that this and has more and later dated authorities (see WH copy). |

A scarce railroad map of the eastern U.S. with an untitled inset map of North America. The style is a greatly simplified cartography showing railroads and canals. At least two other versions of this map appeared in 1856: one without the inset map (Karrow 1-1609), and one with a different inset map of the City of New York (Modelski 30). Dinsmore published the American Railway Guide in the 1850's which included a smaller railway map (see Modelski 10, 16). Richard Fisher wrote for both Colton and Johnson - Statistical Gazetteer, History of the Civil War, text in the Johnson Family Atlas and Colton's General Atlas, and others. In covers of J.G. Wells, who is also listed as publisher of Karrow 1-1610. Schonberg & Co. are listed as "Acrographers" which is a form of printing we have never seen before. Map is full color by state, and folded into embossed brown cloth covers 16x10 with "New Rail Road Map Of The U. States & Canada J.G. Wells" and a decorative leaf design stamped in gilt.
