Full Title The World, on Mercator's Projection: By David H. Burr. Showing the different Routes to California, and distance by each, Routes of different Navigators, Route of the contemplated Pacific R.Road, Distances to China, Europe, &c. Published by J. Haven, 86 State St. Boston, 1850. Entered ... 1850 by John Hansen ... Massachusetts. (with) two inset maps: Map of the Nicaragaua Route and A Map of the Proposed Rail Road from St. Louis To The Bay Of St. Francisco, Compiled from the Maps and Reports of Col. Fremont, by W.L. Dearborn, Civil Engineer.
List No 0112.000
Note Appears to be a reissue of earlier Burr map. This map was probably published by Burr c1842 (Wilkes' track prominently displayed, Oregon boundary not settled in original map) and then used by Haven, with added insets of the RR route, and by cutting the map down the middle of Asia to put North America in the center (see dateline joint). California is colored yellow (no mention of gold other than this hint) and the Gila River boundary is drawn in red (on his copy Wheat says that California is shown as part of Mexico). See the James B. Moore map of 1850 for a similar promotion of the U.S. as the new "center" of the Europe/Asia trade, using the proposed transcontinental railroad as the link. In outline color. Includes text, explanatory keys and table of distances.

List No 4440.000
Note Large uncolored map of the world published separately to accompany the "Memorial of James B. Moore and Company, asking the aid of the Government in the establishment of a regular Line of Mail Steamers from California to China and the East Indies" published in 1849, listed by Sabin without a map. The map shows over thirty routes by steamer from Europe and the United States to the far east, emphasizing the advantage of routes to Asia from the west coast of the U.S. connected to the east coast and Europe via the (yet to come) transcontinental railroad. There is a large attractive vignette of a steamer, two tables listing distances from various ports, and an excellent inset map of the "Harbour of San Francisco California." This map is similar to, but more detailed than, the Burr/Haven map of "The World on Mercator's Projection..." of 1850. Not found in any references (other than the Sabin listing of the Memorial without map) and presumably rare. Prime meridian is Greenwich.

In the Office of Pacific R.R. Surveys, War Dep. under the direction of Bvt. Maj. W.H. Emory and Capt. A.A. Humphreys, Topl. Engrs. 1855. Engr. by Selmar Siebert.
List No 2289.000
Note Very early issue of Warren's Pacific Railroad general map of the U.S. When the Pacific Railway Survey reports were published in 1855, the large Warren map of the U.S. was not completed and a smaller map was issued with a note by Warren that the larger map would soon be ready for publication. This issue of the map is dated 1855 only, unlike the final issue which was dated 1854-5-6-7 (see our #0693). Also, the list of authorities here is shorter than the later issue and has no dates later than 1855. Most importantly, this issue has major areas blank that are filled in the final issue. Various routes are drawn in ms on the map, in red and blue lines, all proceeding from points in the Midwest to the west coast, as well as some north - south routes. Also, a red line is drawn from east to west next to the 38th parallel. We think these are the trails used by travelers, perhaps a few years later, but we can't be sure. There is another early issue of this map that is between this 1855 issue and the version published with the final reports - it is dated 1857, has fewer "blank" areas that this and has more and later dated authorities (see WH copy).

List No 2750.000
Note 2nd 1858 edition, adds Ives Grand Canyon expedition. Also adds information from Warren's third expedition. Schubert says there was an earlier 1858 edition that filled in information in Oregon but did not include the Ives information. Schubert also quotes a letter from Warren stating that this edition was sent to the printer in 1859. Freyhold's name appears on the title for the first time. It is dropped in the next (1867) edition and then reappears in the 1868 edition. Rare - apparently there is only one other copy of this map - in the Millard Fillmore Map Collection in the LOC (see Stephenson article in Map Collector No. 12). This copy came from the Bancroft Library as a duplicate - perhaps they thought it was a duplicate of the 1857 edition. With brown wood side rollers. Map is without color and mounted on linen.

Authors Desilver, Charles, Richardson, W. & D.
Full Title Richardson's New Map Of The State Of Texas Including Part of Mexico Compiled From Government Surveys And Other Authentic Documents. Published By Charles Desilver No. 714 Chestnut Street Philadelphia. Engraved Expressly For The Texas Almanac. Corrected By H. Wickland. 1861. Entered ... 1861 by Charles Desilver ... Pennsylvania. (inset) Map Showing The Proposed Route Of The Aransas (sic) Railroad (And Its) Connections With The Eastern Roads.
List No 5178.000
Note This is an exceptionally attractive map of Texas on the eve of the Civil War. It was issued with Richardson's Texas Almanac of 1861 or possibly the 1862 issue (almanac not present). Railroads completed and in progress are particularly well delineated, and a box of text in the lower left corner (pasted on top of an earlier printing) lists the completed railroads and their proposed extensions as well as one canal, the Galveston Bay and Brazos River. In the lower right is an inset map of the proposed route of the Arkansas Railroad. The topography, coasts and rivers are accurately delineated, with the source being the outstanding Map of Texas and part of Mexico, 1857, issued by the Bureau of Topographical Engineers (see our #5141). Pressler's Map of the State of Texas, 1858, is a secondary source, as is J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas which was published in Desilver's 1859 (Mitchell's) New Universal Atlas (see our #4557). Richardson's map is a serious production, far more up to date than the Colton, Johnson, or Desilver/Mitchell atlas maps of 1861, and more accurate in west Texas, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico than the Pressler 1858 Texas (although Pressler issued an 1862 revised edition, not seen by us, that may be much improved). The first issue of Richardson's map appeared in the 1859 edition of the Texas Almanac, with the map dated 1859, copyright 1858 (Winkler 1052), again in the 1860 Almanac, with the map dated 1860, and our copy, dated 1861 and presumably appearing in the 1861 Almanac (Rosenberg 322B states that the Almanacs for 1857, and 1862-65 did not contain maps). Two other maps appeared in the Richardson Almanacs: J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas (from Desilver's atlas) in the 1858 Almanac (Winkler 886 note) and Richardson's New Map of Texas, published by G.W. and C.B. Colton (Day 428 - about the same size as the Colton atlas map of 1867 and possibly related) and issued in the 1867 Almanac. Desilver stopped map publishing ar

Full Title DeGroot's Map Of Nevada Territory Exhibiting A Portion Of Southern Oregon & Eastern California With County Boundaries, Mining Districts, Railroad Routes, Wagon Roads, Table Of Distances, &c. &c. Published By Warren Holt, 305 Montgomery St. San Francisco, Cal. 1863. Entered ... 1862 by Warren Holt ... California.
List No 3453.000
Note Very scarce detailed map of the early Nevada Territory. Wheat: "DeGroot's 'Nevada' of 1863 is truly an impressive performance...cartographical pioneering of the first order." Wheat believed that the map may have actually been published in 1862 (the date of its copyright) but dated 1863 to be up to date, because it shows the eastern boundary of Nevada at the 116th meridian instead of the 115th which was made the boundary in July of 1862. Much is shown in Nevada, but also in western California, Southern Oregon (the Owyhee is "unexplored") and a small corner of Washington Territory (now Idaho). According to Wheat, DeGroot had extensive first hand knowledge of the entire area and the map displays this with great clarity. What is unusual about this map is its sense of accuracy - it looks like nothing has been put in that the author was not sure of - much like Arrowsmith's maps of the early 1800's. W.H. has the Howell copy with DeGroot's printed Guide to the map mentioned by Wheat and Wagner Camp, probably the only copy of the map existing with the guide, and the only copy of the guide. Map is in full color by county.

List No 4822.001
Note This scarce map shows a large band of central California from San Francisco Bay to Virginia City, Nevada. The showing of railroads is extensive with a separate table listing the engineers for each road. Topography is delineated in "crayon" style resulting in a very clear rendition of the Coast Range and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The mining camps are shown in great number and the overall detail is most impressive with a 4 miles to 1 inch scale. The Whitney Survey "Map of Central California" of 1873 is the only map that we know of that is comparable, yet it is eight years later, at a scale of 6 miles to 1 inch, and runs from west to east from San Francisco Bay, thus ending at Mono Lake and missing Lake Tahoe. This 1865 map runs from southwest to northeast, covering Lake Tahoe and extending to Pyramid Lake in Nevada. We have not seen any map of central California of this period that has the clarity and detail of this map. The map was copyrighted in 1865 by Hoffmann and Poett, about whom not much is known, except that Hoffmann made a "Topographical Map of Lake Tahoe..." in 1874 with Ferdinand Von Leicht (Graff 4497), it is not clear why Bielawski was not also listed on the copyright - perhaps because he was for many years surveyor for the U.S. General Land Office in San Francisco. Haiman states that Bielawski "was considered the most important person in the Land Office, that he personally surveyed and was generally recognized as the best authority on real property titles in the state." This copy is folded into untitled brown cloth covers stamped with a decorative border.

Note Robinson calls this a "fantastic wall map." It is quite striking visually, with a brilliant yellow setting sun and the word "Sunset" overprinted on tract map of the area around present day Wilshire Boulevard. The copy illustrated by Robinson is slightly different from this copy: the tract map has a light blue color (here white) and the printing is in light gold/brown color (here black). Shows block and lot numbers and dimensions, railroad, etc.

Note This is a composite of all 13 maps. The owner of the 13 maps did not include the 2 western maps in this group for some reason, roughly Dakota and Indian Territory, or they may have been lost over time. Each set of these maps was made to order custom by Rand McNally so it is possible that these 13 maps comprise the entire set. The other 2 maps of the western US to the pacific are in the set but they are at a smaller scale so they are not in this composite image.
