List No 5536.001
Note Very rare map with no reference to it found in any of the normal bibliographies. The date is estimated. Proposed railway lines are shown to and from San Francisco to New Orleans and Napolian (sic). The map has been distorted severely with San Francisco much too far east. Napoleon, Arkansas, now defunct (why?), according to Baldwin and Thomas' Gazetteer of 1854, was the capital of Desha County. It was situated on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Arkansas. The population was about 1,000 people, and steamboats ran three times a week to Little Rock. Why it was placed so prominently on the map is unknown. Perhaps it was vying to be a terminus for the railroad. Texas is shown at a highly detailed level. The map is in color and folds into brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Map of Mexico Showing The Seat Of War" on the front cover in gilt.

Authors Ensigns & Thayer
Full Title Ornamental Map Of The United States & Mexico. Map Of The United States And Mexico Including Oregon, Texas and the Californias. Entered ... 1848, by Ensigns & Thayer ... New York. Published by Ensign & Thayer, 50 Ann Street New York. And 12 Exchange St., Buffalo. Sowle & Ward, 43 Cornhill, Boston. Rufus Blanchard: Cincinatti.
List No 2914.000
Note Compare to 1846, '47 Ornamental Map by H. Phelps. This copy is the same as the Streeter 3872, but a slight variant of the Wheat Gold 38 (Changes in the Cincinnati, Boston and Buffalo addresses). Wheat suggests that the map is a cerograph or a wood cut - we believe it is a cerograph. This piece celebrates the U.S. victory over Mexico and shows graphically the growth of U.S. territory from coast to coast. Views of the Contemplated Oregon Railroad from New York to the Pacific Coast, Portraits of Generals Taylor and Scott, etc. A table of Distances in Mexico is in the lower right corner of the map. Rufus Blanchard's name appears in the lower left under the Great Temple. There was an edition of 1855 by Ensign, Bridgman and Fanning (see our copy and see Streeter 3892 for 1854, also by EB&F). Full color. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and washington, D.C.

Compiled from surveys of the United States Land Office, and various other authentic sources. By J. Calvin Smith. New York, Published by J.H. Colton, 86 Cedar Street. 1854. Revised Edition. (inset) Southern Part Of Florida.
List No 4500.000
Note This is the third year of Colton's publication of this map. Other than adding his name to the title, the map remains the same, except for many changes in the topographical and political information: Washington, Oregon, Utah, New Mexico and California (but not Kansas yet) are shown on the inset map of North America. On the main map Iowa's western counties are filled out, Texas adds many counties in the west, and railroad growth is explosive throughout, all compared to the 1850 edition. With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county with states outlined.

Note This is the second edition, with the 1855 copyright date and no other date on the map. There are small changes in the main map (El Paso, Texas and Nephi, Utah are added, as well as additional Pacific railroad routes) but the inset map of the Gadsden Purchase and the untitled map of the U.S. are largely the same. Map is full color by state, folded into dark gray cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover. Relief shown by hachures.

Full Title Richardson's New Map Of The State Of Texas Including Part of Mexico Compiled From Government Surveys And Other Authentic Documents. Published By Charles Desilver No. 714 Chestnut Street Philadelphia. Engraved Expressly For The Texas Almanac. Corrected By H. Wickland. 1861. Entered ... 1861 by Charles Desilver ... Pennsylvania. (inset) Map Showing The Proposed Route Of The Aransas (sic) Railroad (And Its) Connections With The Eastern Roads.
List No 5178.000
Note This is an exceptionally attractive map of Texas on the eve of the Civil War. It was issued with Richardson's Texas Almanac of 1861 or possibly the 1862 issue (almanac not present). Railroads completed and in progress are particularly well delineated, and a box of text in the lower left corner (pasted on top of an earlier printing) lists the completed railroads and their proposed extensions as well as one canal, the Galveston Bay and Brazos River. In the lower right is an inset map of the proposed route of the Arkansas Railroad. The topography, coasts and rivers are accurately delineated, with the source being the outstanding Map of Texas and part of Mexico, 1857, issued by the Bureau of Topographical Engineers (see our #5141). Pressler's Map of the State of Texas, 1858, is a secondary source, as is J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas which was published in Desilver's 1859 (Mitchell's) New Universal Atlas (see our #4557). Richardson's map is a serious production, far more up to date than the Colton, Johnson, or Desilver/Mitchell atlas maps of 1861, and more accurate in west Texas, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico than the Pressler 1858 Texas (although Pressler issued an 1862 revised edition, not seen by us, that may be much improved). The first issue of Richardson's map appeared in the 1859 edition of the Texas Almanac, with the map dated 1859, copyright 1858 (Winkler 1052), again in the 1860 Almanac, with the map dated 1860, and our copy, dated 1861 and presumably appearing in the 1861 Almanac (Rosenberg 322B states that the Almanacs for 1857, and 1862-65 did not contain maps). Two other maps appeared in the Richardson Almanacs: J.H. Young's Map of the State of Texas (from Desilver's atlas) in the 1858 Almanac (Winkler 886 note) and Richardson's New Map of Texas, published by G.W. and C.B. Colton (Day 428 - about the same size as the Colton atlas map of 1867 and possibly related) and issued in the 1867 Almanac. Desilver stopped map publishing ar
