2nd (and best) edition, first with Tanner's Map of the Canals and Railroads of the United States. The map is copyright 1830. The book lists over 150 canals and navigation improvements in great detail. The map shows the most important canals and two railroads in operation, and one proposed railroad (the Great Western Railroad, from New York to the Mississippi River)plus two others. The canals and railroad lines are in color. The first edition appeared in 1826 with 10 maps but without the Tanner map (see our copy #4214). Tanner in 1834 and 1840 (see our copies, #2655 and #979) published a book on Canals and Railroads that uses the same map, updated. Modelski lists the 1834 Tanner map as "one of the earliest general maps of the eastern United States showing railroads in operation." Since this 1830 copy is an earlier state of the same map, it probably qualifies as the true "first." Two folding plates of profiles of canals and railroads at the back. Not in Streeter, Eberstadt, or Graff. Bound in half leather boards with "A Connected View" on the spine. |

Very rare map with no reference to it found in any of the normal bibliographies. The date is estimated. Proposed railway lines are shown to and from San Francisco to New Orleans and Napolian (sic). The map has been distorted severely with San Francisco much too far east. Napoleon, Arkansas, now defunct (why?), according to Baldwin and Thomas' Gazetteer of 1854, was the capital of Desha County. It was situated on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Arkansas. The population was about 1,000 people, and steamboats ran three times a week to Little Rock. Why it was placed so prominently on the map is unknown. Perhaps it was vying to be a terminus for the railroad. Texas is shown at a highly detailed level. The map is in color and folds into brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Map of Mexico Showing The Seat Of War" on the front cover in gilt. |

This is probably the late 1852 issue - Karrow 1-1578 is the same map without Colton's name in the title, indicating that Colton took over publishing the map later in the year. Full color by county. Map is dissected into 36 sections, mounted on linen. Folds into marbled end sheets and a new black cloth folding case 36x30 with "Colton's Map Of The United States J. Very early issue of Warren's Pacific Railroad general map of the U.S. When the Pacific Railway Survey reports were published in 1855, the large Warren map of the U.S. was not completed and a smaller map was issued with a note by Warren that the larger map would soon be ready for publication. This issue of the map is dated 1855 only, unlike the final issue which was dated 1854-5-6-7 (see our #0693). Also, the list of authorities here is shorter than the later issue and has no dates later than 1855. Most importantly, this issue has major areas blank that are filled in the final issue. Various routes are drawn in ms on the map, in red and blue lines, all proceeding from points in the Midwest to the west coast, as well as some north - south routes. Also, a red line is drawn from east to west next to the 38th parallel. We think these are the trails used by travelers, perhaps a few years later, but we can't be sure. There is another early issue of this map that is between this 1855 issue and the version published with the final reports - it is dated 1857, has fewer "blank" areas that this and has more and later dated authorities (see WH copy). |

A large promotional map of an early Iowa river town. See Andrea Iowa Atlas, page 402 for the early history of Clinton. The Iowa Land Company speculated that the railroad crossing of the Mississippi would occur at Clinton's site and thus bring many settlers to the area. The Chicago, Iowa and Nebraska Railroad was formed in 1856 (Andreas) and the bridge, tracks and roundhouse are shown on the map, probably prospectively. This map was most likely used for promotion of land sales. Without color. Showing tract names and lot numbers. |

This large and decorative map by Monk reflects the interest in Central America in the mid 50's (see Palmer, Wyld, Disturnell, and others) but adds the U.S. coast line from Florida to Texas, which is missing in most of the other maps of Central America. With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). 2nd 1858 edition, adds Ives Grand Canyon expedition. Also adds information from Warren's third expedition. Schubert says there was an earlier 1858 edition that filled in information in Oregon but did not include the Ives information. Schubert also quotes a letter from Warren stating that this edition was sent to the printer in 1859. Freyhold's name appears on the title for the first time. It is dropped in the next (1867) edition and then reappears in the 1868 edition. Rare - apparently there is only one other copy of this map - in the Millard Fillmore Map Collection in the LOC (see Stephenson article in Map Collector No. 12). This copy came from the Bancroft Library as a duplicate - perhaps they thought it was a duplicate of the 1857 edition. With brown wood side rollers. Map is without color and mounted on linen. |

This Quarto issue of the report is the House issue, except for volume XI which is the Senate issue. W. Heckrotte has an unusual copy of the Warren U.S. map found in this report. It is dissected on linen and is an earlier version of the map published with the Quarto report. It has 40 authorities vs. 42 in the quarto issue map, shorter note to left of authorities, lots of plate differences, especially: nothing in Owyhee area, differences in N.M., Calif., etc. Looks like someone asked for the map before it was finished -see the Lack of ocean lines in the top half south of Gray's Harbor. In 13 volumes. Bound in full leather with "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad to the Pacific Ocean" and the volume number on the spine in gold. |

A preliminary listed of those would be: 1855 (our #2289), 1857 (WH and AH's copies)- blank areas in eastern Oregon, fewer authorities, 1857 published with the reports, 1858 early (see Schubert);1858 late (our #2750), 1867 (our #2594). We suspect there are other states and issues, particularly in the period of 1859 to 1866. This is one of the most important maps of the West in the 1850's and 1860's and a study of its different states shows the rapid growth of topographical information from government exploration and mapping.
