Authors Sinclair, Thomas
Full Title Map of Mexico Showing the Seat of War. Lith. of T. Sinclair, 79 So. 3rd St. Philadelphia.
List No 5536.001
Note Very rare map with no reference to it found in any of the normal bibliographies. The date is estimated. Proposed railway lines are shown to and from San Francisco to New Orleans and Napolian (sic). The map has been distorted severely with San Francisco much too far east. Napoleon, Arkansas, now defunct (why?), according to Baldwin and Thomas' Gazetteer of 1854, was the capital of Desha County. It was situated on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Arkansas. The population was about 1,000 people, and steamboats ran three times a week to Little Rock. Why it was placed so prominently on the map is unknown. Perhaps it was vying to be a terminus for the railroad. Texas is shown at a highly detailed level. The map is in color and folds into brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Map of Mexico Showing The Seat Of War" on the front cover in gilt.

Note This is the second edition, with the 1855 copyright date and no other date on the map. There are small changes in the main map (El Paso, Texas and Nephi, Utah are added, as well as additional Pacific railroad routes) but the inset map of the Gadsden Purchase and the untitled map of the U.S. are largely the same. Map is full color by state, folded into dark gray cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover. Relief shown by hachures.

With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). List No 4552.001
Note Fourth edition, with the inset at the lower left of the United States replaced by a taller, large scale inset map of the eastern counties of Nebraska and Kansas. The main map is mostly unchanged, with only a few railroad routes added. The addition of the detailed county map inset was probably due to the "bleeding Kansas" troubles of 1856. Map is full color by state, folded into brown cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover. Relief shown by hachures.

Compiled from the best authorities, by R. Rosa, late Col. 46th Regt. N.Y.S. Vol. Published by Ch. Lubrecht & Co., 12 Frankfort Street, New York. 1864. Agents For Great Britain: Bacon & Co., 48 Paternoster Row, London, England. For Germany, Switzerland And Italy: Fr. Volkmar, Leipsic. Lubrecht & Co., Stuttgart. Revised Edition. Entered ... 1864, by Ch. Lubrecht & Co. ... New York. (with) Central America.
List No 3127A
Note 1st edition. 2nd edition was1865, another edition in 1869 (Karrow 1-1683). German edition published in 1864. (Karrow 1-1655). Inset of Central America, text on top of map describing British American Possessions, Time Tables, and U.S. Census for 1860. We can find no earlier edition of this map, so the "Revised Edition" is puzzling. Lubrecht lists three foreign publishers for this map: Bacon in London, Volkmar in Leipsic, and Lubrecht & Co. in Stuttgart. An edition in German is described in Karrow. Later, this map became the more elaborate 1871 "American Union Railroad Map of the United States..." by Hassis & Lubrecht, also published by D.L. Gurnsey (see our copy, WH's copy, and Heaston Cat. 19 for a reproduction). The Proposed transcontinental railroad is shown going south of Salt Lake City, Wyoming is still part of Dakota, and a Proposed Southern Pacific Railroad runs from Fort Smith to Sacramento. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Folded into black paper covered boards 24.5x21 with "The American Continent" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.

Note This was one of the first United States atlases to exclusively feature railroad lines, showing minimal topography (in this later edition more topographical features are added, earlier editions have fewer features shown ) and only showing towns on or next to the railroads lines. We find the maps most interesting and beautiful, although some might find them a bit spare. This copy was published late in 1874 and is the most complete edition. Contains maps of Washington, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, Western Texas, etc. (similar to our early 1874 edition). The western United States maps are especially interesting. Full color. Bound in quarter leather dark brown and red cloth covered boards stamped with the title "Asher & Adams' new commercial and statistical alas and gazetteer of the United States." in gilt, the same title is blind stamped on the back cover. The remaining leather of the original spine reads "Asher & Adams' atlas and gazetteer of the U.S." Page numbering discontinuous.
