Iowa is now fully developed with counties, and there is major railroad growth in Indiana and Illinois, among other changes from the 1850 edition. This is probably the late 1852 issue - Karrow 1-1578 is the same map without Colton's name in the title, indicating that Colton took over publishing the map later in the year. Full color by county. Map is dissected into 36 sections, mounted on linen. Folds into marbled end sheets and a new black cloth folding case 36x30 with "Colton's Map Of The United States J. This large and decorative map by Monk reflects the interest in Central America in the mid 50's (see Palmer, Wyld, Disturnell, and others) but adds the U.S. coast line from Florida to Texas, which is missing in most of the other maps of Central America. With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). There is an ad for "Colton's...Complete Series of War Maps" on the verso of the cover and a pasted down list of Union and Confederate Political and Military leaders on the verso of the map. The map was sold in London by Sampson Low, Son & Co., by arrangement with Colton. All the prices quoted for Colton's maps on the paste down are in pounds. There was great demand in England for maps of the American Civil War, and Colton exploited it by providing his maps to English map sellers. W.H. has an identical copy of this map sold by Crutchly. Reissue, with new discoveries, of 1857 Warren "Map of the Territory of the United States..." Although Freyhold's name is not on the title, he clearly redrew this map from his earlier 1858 edition (where his name does appear on the title). This is earlier than the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions (Streeter 3080 and 3081), and should be distinguished from them in having the title still in the lower left corner (not in the lower center as in the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions), and because it does not have the Alaska inset, has 47 authorities vs. 48, and is dated Aug 26, 1867 in Ms. next to the same inscription mentioned by Streeter on his later copy (Wm. E. Merrill, etc., which Streeter mistakes for E. Hamill). Mail routes in red ink (original?)(Streeter says they were dropped from the second 1868 ed.) plus many interesting Ms. additions of names of forts, and extension of pacific railroad. Cf. Wheat 1185. Wheat does not mention this edition and was not aware of it (see his "correction" of Wheeler's mention of the map in the note, p. 244). See a very informative article by Lewis Buttery on a slightly earlier state of this map (early 1867) found at West Point - "Warren Map of 1867." Outline color. This is a reworking of the Lubrecht and Rosa map "The American Continent" of 1864, and the first edition, first issue in a new format. Statistics at the top of the 1864 map are here replaced with a view "From the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean" emphasizing the recently completed transcontinental railroad. Also, an elaborate title and view of a steam engine and train station have replaced the more subdued 1864 title. Population tables of the United States are added to the left and right sides of the map. The map itself has been updated to show political and some topographical changes of the ensuing seven years. Projected railroad lines are shown running everywhere in the west. The coloring is very bright, to match the decidedly optimistic (expansionist) flavor of the map. D.L. Guernsey published editions of 1871 and 1874 in Concord New Hampshire, with no major changes in the map. WH has an 1873 edition by Haasis and Lubrecht that adds text next to the population figures, more railroads, no changes in topography. Issued in a cover with a label in German from Wilhelm Lubrecht in Stuttgart, Germany, indicating it may have been sold to emigrants. Full color. Map has green paper edging, is dissected into 16 sections, and fold into a new gray cloth folding case 35x27 with "American Union Railroad Map Haasis & Lubrecht 1871" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

This edition is not in Vogdes (he lists editions of 1869, 1876, and 1888). The copyright date is 1876, so it is probably similar to that edition. There are many changes, as one would hope (or expect) between this and the 1869 edition, both in graphic composition and topography. The map has been completely reengraved by S.B.Linton (the original engraver) and shows much of the General Land Office surveys. It is so full of detail as to be difficult to read in many areas. Two views are added: the Capital-Nevada, and University-California. The 1888 edition is reengraved completely yet again (WH's copy). This copy belonged to Lewis M. Clement, Chief Engineer of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad. The inside of the case flap closure reads "Lewis M. Clement, Chief Engineer of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad - Office: Safe Deposit Building Room 8 - San Francisco, Cal." in calligraphic manuscript. The map is slightly trimmed at the bottom (affecting only the decorative border) in order to fit into his custom brown cloth case 28x17. Map has outline color, is in two sheets (Northern and Southern halves), each undissected and mounted on linen. |
