Very rare map with no reference to it found in any of the normal bibliographies. The date is estimated. Proposed railway lines are shown to and from San Francisco to New Orleans and Napolian (sic). The map has been distorted severely with San Francisco much too far east. Napoleon, Arkansas, now defunct (why?), according to Baldwin and Thomas' Gazetteer of 1854, was the capital of Desha County. It was situated on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Arkansas. The population was about 1,000 people, and steamboats ran three times a week to Little Rock. Why it was placed so prominently on the map is unknown. Perhaps it was vying to be a terminus for the railroad. Texas is shown at a highly detailed level. The map is in color and folds into brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Map of Mexico Showing The Seat Of War" on the front cover in gilt. |

Drake (about whom we find nothing) with five inset maps entitled - "Vicinity Of Niagara Falls", "Map Of The Copper Mine Region", "Map of the Gold and Quicksilver district of California", "Map of the Maritime and Overland Routes to California", and "Map Of New England Or Eastern States". The map emphasis on the California gold rush is clear, although the 128 pages of expanded text do not yet list routes to the gold fields, while they do add routes west from St. Louis and Independence. The main map is larger than the earlier Mitchell/Young maps, but shows roughly the same area on a somewhat larger scale. An "Advertisement" (actually a preface) dated Nov. 1, 1848, states: "The following work is similar in design to 'Mitchell's Traveller's Guide,' first published about twelve years ago, and which has been so extremely patronized, that it may be safely asserted no book of the kind ever printed in this country has met with so wide a circulation." Covers are black stamped leather with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration of a steam boat and train stamped in gilt. Map is outline color. Appears to be a reissue of earlier Burr map. This map was probably published by Burr c1842 (Wilkes' track prominently displayed, Oregon boundary not settled in original map) and then used by Haven, with added insets of the RR route, and by cutting the map down the middle of Asia to put North America in the center (see dateline joint). California is colored yellow (no mention of gold other than this hint) and the Gila River boundary is drawn in red (on his copy Wheat says that California is shown as part of Mexico). See the James B. Moore map of 1850 for a similar promotion of the U.S. as the new "center" of the Europe/Asia trade, using the proposed transcontinental railroad as the link. In outline color. Includes text, explanatory keys and table of distances. |

Large uncolored map of the world published separately to accompany the "Memorial of James B. Moore and Company, asking the aid of the Government in the establishment of a regular Line of Mail Steamers from California to China and the East Indies" published in 1849, listed by Sabin without a map. The map shows over thirty routes by steamer from Europe and the United States to the far east, emphasizing the advantage of routes to Asia from the west coast of the U.S. connected to the east coast and Europe via the (yet to come) transcontinental railroad. There is a large attractive vignette of a steamer, two tables listing distances from various ports, and an excellent inset map of the "Harbour of San Francisco California." This map is similar to, but more detailed than, the Burr/Haven map of "The World on Mercator's Projection..." of 1850. Not found in any references (other than the Sabin listing of the Memorial without map) and presumably rare. Prime meridian is Greenwich. |

Norris: "Very scarce railroad map of San Francisco." Streeter purchased the Norris copy, which was not in as good condition as this copy. Not in any of the standard references. Red circles emanate from City Hall showing distances at 1/4 mile intervals. Four railroads are identified. The map goes west to Divisadero and south to Alta Street. On the inside front cover is an ad for the Pacific Map Depot, A. Gensoul, 511 Montgomery Street. Various maps, including Mining maps are listed for sale. The front of the dark green cloth covers 9.5x8 have a printed purple label "Railroad Pocket Map Of The City Of San Francisco. Pacific Map Depot. San Francisco, Cal." A later issue was published in 1866 by Gensoul, a similar map was used in various editions of the San Francisco Municipal Reports in the 1860's. |
